Appearance

Design korean smartphone Let's call it boring, ordinary. For example, devices from HTC or Nokia look more impressive and are immediately memorable. In our case, the phone is nothing special; the appearance of the candy bar is simple and conservative.

At the same time, there is complete similarity with the model line of that time. For example, next to each other the model looks equal; to some extent, they can be called copies of each other. Modest black monoblocks with smooth edges on the sides and slightly protruding sides.

The assembly of the Korean smartphone is beyond any criticism, excellent workmanship, as usual. There is no need to choose the color of the case; only one universal option is offered.

The dimensions of the phone are 115 x 58 x 10.9 mm, weight 115 g. The result is a medium-sized brick-block, which is neither overweight nor uncomfortable in size. You can easily put the device in your jeans or jacket pocket.

The main part of the body is made of plastic. Despite the fact that it is glossy and seems to be supposed to collect fingerprints, there are few marks left on it. This may be due to the fact that the main part of the rear panel is occupied by a metal insert. Thanks to it, it is possible to avoid the untidy appearance of the phone. Indeed, in most cases it is this area that gets dirty.

Below are two touch buttons. The arrow takes you back one step, and holding this key opens the menu of running tasks. Another button opens the search menu. The keys have a white backlight that activates when pressed. The central button displays main screen from any application. Unlike the others, it is mechanical, with a small stroke.

At the top end there is a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

On the right is a very convenient volume key.

On the right side there is a raised key for locking the screen, as well as a dedicated two-position button for shooting.

There is a universal microUSB port at the bottom. Connects to it Charger or cable.

At the back at the top there is a 5-megapixel camera lens located exactly in the center. To his right is a LED flash. To the left is a ringer speaker under a pair of slots.

It may seem that the metal plate itself is back cover. However, it fits very well into the design and is only part of the removable panel itself.

There is a small recess on the side that allows you to see the insides of the device. Nothing special here: standard for smartphones Samsung battery and a SIM card slot located on the side.

Screen

Samsung Omnia W Super AMOLED with a resolution of 480x800 pixels and a diagonal of 3.7 inches displays 16 million colors. The smartphone is equipped with an accelerometer, a proximity sensor and a brightness sensor. The screen is excellent: with bright and vibrant colors, excellent viewing angles. If desired, you can activate an option in the menu that will automatically dim the brightness when a white picture is displayed to save energy.

I suggest you look at the Samsung Omnia W next to. Not without its drawbacks. PenTile can be seen in smartphones from both manufacturers. Those with acute vision will most likely be disappointed, but everyone else will not experience any inconvenience. Nokia on the left, Samsung on the right.

The Gorilla Glass coating protects the display, but scratches are possible. The screen behaves normally in the sun; the picture fades but remains readable.

Platform

It offers a Qualcomm 8255 processor with a frequency of 1.4 GHz. The smartphone has 512 MB random access memory and 8 GB built-in. Of this, a little more than 6 GB is available for storing user data. It is impossible to add space for content; the memory is not replaceable. The smartphone works very quickly, there is simply a lightning-fast reaction to all user actions.

Interface

The lock screen should be called the most striking element of the phone shell. A background image from the device’s memory is assigned here; it can be not only an image offered by the manufacturer, but also any other one uploaded to the device by the user or taken using the camera. To activate the screen you need to press the lock key. After touching, the display will light up for a short period of time. You can see time and date information on the screen. At the bottom of the event line, icons of new messages or calls will be displayed if they were left unattended by the user. This also includes data about future events recorded in the calendar. The number of events of each type will be indicated.

Information about network connections. If the player is working, then from here you can control the operation of the widget responsible for the process of playing music. This element will also help you change the sound profile mode. To get to the phone menu, you need to swipe up from the bottom of the lock picture. For those who want to protect the contents of their smartphone from prying eyes, a password request function is provided.

The decoration of the main screen is simple and even ascetic. Nowadays, the majority of smartphones offer a variety of widgets and all sorts of functions in order to make maximum use of desktop space. The WP7 developers abandoned this idea. Instead, a new and unusual way of organizing the menu is proposed. The status line at the top contains information about wireless connections and time. Data about new events does not appear here. In this case, most often this period disappears, the battery charge level is not visible. You must touch the top of the screen to bring up this menu.

Most of the space is occupied by large squares, which are responsible for access to certain sections. These are application shortcuts, the menu itself is located on the next tab. Getting into it is simple, just follow the directions of a single arrow, under which a gaping black hole opens. By swiping your finger from right to left, you can get to the main menu. Here, in alphabetical order, all the programs that are installed on the phone are listed. This includes both standard applications and those subsequently added by the device owner.

From here, any icon can be sent to the desktop. There they change places and are placed in the right order. You may notice that some elements occupy not one area, but two. These are large shortcuts that add some variety. Moreover, some of them are equipped with animation. For example, the gallery icon will show something like a slide presentation. Real-time weather indication is displayed. As information about new events becomes available, corresponding icons appear on the icons. This is the number of new SMS, emails or missed calls. The list of shortcuts scrolls up and down; it doesn’t move any other way. The same principle applies to the main menu. To make it easier to manage a large number of programs in the future, there is a search function that will save you from tedious scrolling through a long string of icons.

If you want to change the design, you can choose from black or White background, as well as eleven design themes. “Theme” is a strong word, they do not transform the interface, they only change the color of the icons and some of the menu items.

The platform offers multitasking. You need to hold the return button, after which a menu of windows will open, among which running applications will be displayed. There you can switch between them. However, this only applies to built-in applications. Programs from third-party developers do not work so smoothly; the user is faced with a lack of real multitasking. Today this is one of the main problems of the new platform.

Contacts

The phone book is divided into three sections. The first one shows all the names that are in the device's memory. The second one displays those that were used most often, these are the most popular contacts. The last column will connect together news from social networks. For example, Twitter or Facebook.

Contacts are displayed in a list that allows you to see the image assigned to the subscriber. The full first and last name cannot fit on one line. Personally, I don't like this option. Considering that there is a lot of free space left on the screen, such an implementation of a functional element looks controversial. Above the list of names, about a quarter of the screen is taken up by a large section header. A small area on the side is occupied by the adjacent column. The phone book is divided into small groups, with a letter highlighted in bright color above each of them.

In the settings, select the type of sorting of names and the option for displaying them. There are book filter settings. From here you can remove data from social networks if they interfere. By holding your finger on the line with the subscriber's name, this contact can be moved to the desktop, deleted or edited.

When a new user is created, various data are assigned to him. Before this, you need to choose where the information will be saved: to your account Windows Live or another profile.

The new user receives a first name, last name, patronymic, place of work, nickname, title, picture. He is assigned several phone numbers different types: mobile, home, work, organization, pager, fax. At the same time, according to the creators of the platform, a person can only have one mobile phone. The issue is resolved by creating several contacts and merging them into one. But two home or work numbers. Three types of email are specified. Additional fields are assigned to the contact. This is an address, website, birthday, note, anniversary, loved one, children, office location, position. You can set not only one of the files in the phone’s memory as a ringtone, but also any other one. The search menu will help you find the right person. The phone allows you to create user groups. They will be highlighted separately in front of the general list of names. By adding users to each group, you can follow the lives of your friends, see their messages and pictures. Of course, you can write a letter, SMS or call them from here.

Calls

To go to the dialing menu, you need to click on the icon, after which a list of numbers opens. The telephone part is divided into four groups. This is the call log itself, dialing, phone book and search. The device cannot remember the partition that was last used. Thus, to dial a number you will always need to perform an extra action associated with moving from the call list to virtual keyboard.

During the dialogue, information about the duration of the conversation is displayed on the screen, and before that a picture will be displayed if it has been assigned to the contact. The virtual keyboard displays Latin characters, but they will not help when dialing a number. There is no function for automatically selecting suitable numbers. The only assistant in this matter is the search option.

The call list is organized very simply. Here, in a long string of numbers, is the entire call history. It doesn't matter whether the numbers were the same or not. The phone cannot combine calls of the same type. The caller's name or number will be displayed if the data has not been saved in the phone memory. In order to highlight the type of call (incoming or outgoing), multi-colored backlighting is used, which highlights the information under the number. By selecting a number from the list, you can see the history of the call when you dialed someone. The number from the log is saved in phone book either an existing user, or a new one is created.

Messages

Correspondence is formed in two sections. The first consists of correspondence in the form of SMS and MMS. The other consists of Facebook contacts. Thus, you can correspond from here with users of the virtual community. Messages are displayed in a column. The sender's name or number is indicated here in large font. The text of the latest message is displayed in small letters at the bottom. The day on which the message was received is indicated on the right. If you hold your finger on a line, a menu will open, which will delete the entire dialogue. If desired, single SMS messages are deleted in the correspondence between users. Any message from the dialogue can be forwarded. For clarity, the text of unread messages is highlighted in bright color, based on the design theme.

If you expand the correspondence window, messages will appear that are divided into blocks. At the same time, incoming and sent SMS differ from each other in shades, which makes it easier to read. In addition, the date and time the message was received is noted here. The number or name of the person with whom you are communicating is displayed above the message. If you click on this line, a menu will open that will allow you to make a call or see more detailed information about the subscriber.

When typing a message, you need to select the sender. You can simply type the numbers on the line at the top of the screen or select an existing contact. Previously used numbers cannot be used. The text entry field itself is located below, as new words are added, this space expands. When the number of characters becomes more than sixty, the number of characters will be displayed below. This will help take into account the volume of a new SMS; sending combined, large messages is supported. A text message automatically turns into a multimedia message if you add a picture to it. In this case, only a snapshot from the camera or an image from the gallery is inserted. It will not be possible to convey any other information.

The settings in this section allow you to disable Facebook chat and activate a delivery report, which will be sent as a separate message. It’s inconvenient that the phone can’t save drafts in memory. The lack of templates is less critical, but this fact is worth mentioning.

Email

The device offers a mailbox setup wizard. It will be postal windows service live, outlook, yahoo mail or google. You will have to configure other services manually; Yandex or Mail are not provided for automatic settings.

Each account is assigned a name, and the mailbox check interval is configured: push mode, every 15, 30 or 60 minutes. You can also check your email manually. The time period for loading correspondence is set: 3, 7, 14 or 30 days or all the time. However, you cannot set a limit on downloading emails. The signature text that will be displayed on the sent letter is included. Mailbox offers several category headings: all, unread, due, important. The interface resembles a message menu. The sender's name is highlighted in large font, with the contents of the letter below in neat text. To the right is the time or date of receipt. New letters are highlighted in bright colors.

By holding your finger on a line with a message, you can delete it, mark it as read, move it to another folder, or assign a mark. Incoming emails with attachments will display a paperclip icon to help you understand that something has been added to the message. There is enough space on the screen for information about five letters. Below you can see four icons. The first allows you to create a new letter, the second is responsible for selecting several objects, the other allows you to check your mail. The latter opens a search menu within the correspondence archive.

When you open a received email, you will see information about the sender, time and date of receipt, and content. Using multi-touch, you can easily scale text to a convenient size. However, text cannot adapt to the boundaries of the screen. The type of attachments is shown, the device allows you to download and view “office” type files, but you cannot see where the document was downloaded. For clarity, undownloaded attachments are displayed as a paperclip icon. Those that have already downloaded receive a different icon that corresponds to their usual symbol on the computer - the Word file icon is known to any user.

Entering text

You can choose from portrait or landscape mode. In both cases, about half of the screen is allocated for the keyboard. A separate key is available to change the input language. Another special button stores many emoticons in memory. They are in the form of symbols, rather than the usual emoticons, which will require some knowledge in order to select the desired type when sending. Added sound when typing; it can be turned off. Select the desired language layouts from the menu. By holding your finger on a letter key, you can see a menu with additional symbols. For example, in the Russian keyboard, Ъ is called through ь, and Ъ through E.

Implemented copying and pasting text. A cursor works on a similar principle, helping to correct typos. The built-in auto-word substitution works very well, it has an extensive vocabulary, I liked it. Input speed depends on the user's skills. If you get used to the layout, you can type text quite quickly.

Calendar

The device offers a choice of several ways to display information. This is a day scheduled by the hour, a list of planned events, or tasks displayed in a separate column. In addition, all data can be displayed in the form of a regular monthly plan. It is important to note that in some squares something will be written. However, you can only see scheduled events if you go to the section with this data, click on the date and open a new menu. And this despite the fact that there is a lot of free space “walking” below, it could be used more wisely. The device allows you to simultaneously use several calendars, each of them is highlighted in a different color. In the settings you can change it by selecting one of the possible options.

When creating a new event, several fields are filled in: topic, location, calendar, time, duration are selected. Additionally, a reminder is set that is triggered at the start of the event, 5, 10, 15, 30, 60 minutes, 18 hours, one day, one week in advance. A daily repeat is turned on, on every weekday, on every day of the week that coincides with the day the event was created, on every date that coincides with the date the event was created. Participants of the event are added who will receive notifications about it via e-mail. Also to new entry notes are created.

Browser

HTML5 support borders on non-existent Adobe Flash. However, you can see animated advertisements on various resources, and videos are played on YouTube. The browser allows you to keep up to six windows open at the same time. The loading speed of resources is high, and the operation of the application itself is also pleasing. It is fast, scrolling through even large sites occurs without delay. Unfortunately, the browser does not know how to adapt a scaled font to the screen borders. You have to move around the page to see the hidden text.

The address bar is located at the bottom, right under your fingers, which is very convenient. There is an icon for reloading the page on the left, and an additional menu opens on the right. This includes your browsing history and bookmarks. The necessary resources can be added directly to the desktop. You can disable it in the application settings saving cookies, select viewing mode. This item allows you to activate the mobile or full version.

The application works in landscape or portrait mode, the set of capabilities is the same. The search for the required words on the page works.

Music

The phone supports .m4a, m4b, .mp3, .wma formats. The section with music and video is combined into a common group. This also includes podcasts and radio. Another tab shows history. Here you can look at songs that you have listened to before or at films. The last list will show the new data that has been added to the phone. In each of the categories, except the first, file covers are shown, it looks beautiful.

The Music section will offer a list of files, which are ordered by name depending on the selected criterion. The following options are possible: artists, albums, compositions, playlists, genres. If you click on one of the letters, you can use the quick search function among the data.

When a song is played, the file's cover art appears on the screen. At the top there are three standard player control keys. Below is information about the artist, album and track title. Under the song name, the names of the next two songs are indicated in small print. There is also information about the playing time and total duration of the song. However, there is no rewind function using the scroll bar, it does not work. To do this, you will need to hold down the Forward or Backward key to move to the desired area.

The repeat mode is turned on for all songs or just one. There is a mixed playback mode. You can also mark your favorite composition separately. If you click on the volume control button, a small menu will open, which will display information about the track and buttons for moving between songs. It is also available when the screen is locked, which is convenient.

The sound quality is good, however, the volume reserve is small, as happens in other Samsung phones. We can also note the absence of an equalizer, but it’s still pleasant to listen to music without it.

Radio

The receiver is ascetic; only a line is displayed where a scale with numbers is displayed. Not only manual search works, but also automatic search. The desired stations are stored in the device memory. Some data is missing here, for example, RDS information is not displayed. The design is very simple: white numbers on a black background and nothing else.

Video

The player is extremely simple. A list of files in the phone's memory is displayed here; by selecting the one you need, it will open in full screen, although black bars at the top and bottom are possible. The screen displays the duration of the video and the time since the start of its playback. There are three player control keys, as well as a scroll bar that helps you quickly move through the movie. Declared formats: 3gp, .3g2, .mp4, .m4v, .mbr, .wmv. There is no DivX or XviD support here. However, when you copy a movie to your device via Zune, the app will automatically convert the file to the desired format. Of course it will take time.

Camera

A 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash is installed. Shooting is launched not only from the menu, but also using a dedicated button on the side. You need to press it and hold your finger for five seconds, after which you can take a photo. The button is two-position, comfortable. An excellent opportunity is to start shooting in locked mode, this allows you not to waste extra time, but to immediately start taking photographs.

The screen acts as a viewfinder. On the right is a button for switching between photo and video shooting modes. Below is the digital zoom key. The last button is responsible for the settings menu. On the left you can see a small part of the previously taken frame. From here you can go directly to the gallery if you click on this picture.

Sample pictures good quality, if we take into account the capabilities of the 5-megapixel module. But for the same money you can find devices that offer more interesting shooting capabilities.

Video recording While recording video, a large clock is displayed on the screen; there is no way to turn it off. Maximum quality 720p, 30 frames per second with stereo sound. Settings Effects: grayscale, negative, sepia, solarium. Resolution: 1280x720 pixels, 640x480 pixels. Gallery Camera shots and other images are included in the general section. It's called Photos and consists of several categories: favorites, new, programs. Pictures are sorted by albums, dates and people. Photos from Facebook appear here if you add your account to your smartphone. Viewing data is simple and convenient. The screen displays a 2x3 or 4x5 matrix of folders or the icons it contains, respectively. You can change the image scale with a multi-touch or double click. Any image can be set as lock screen wallpaper, sent via MMS, email, posted to Facebook or Twitter, or uploaded to SkyDrive. The image is also added to the favorites list and opened using an editing program. The unnecessary file is deleted from here, while batch selection of several objects is impossible; each of them will have to be erased in turn. The facial recognition feature allows you to tag people in your photos. After this, the photos can be uploaded to Facebook. Watch Several alarms are stored in memory. Each of them is given a signal time and a repeat mode by day of the week. You can choose from melodies from the device's memory. In addition, you can assign a name to the alarm clock. The calculator offers all the necessary functions to carry out calculations. If you turn the device on its side, an additional settings menu will open. Navigation Bing Maps doesn't work well. The application's capabilities are extremely meager and limited. For example, you can’t even get directions. There is no localization, street names are indicated with Latin letters. It is interesting that, judging by the characteristics of the phone, it supports GLONASS satellites, but there is no way to test this in practice yet. Marketplace As the name suggests, this menu serves as a source for finding new programs. You will need a Windows Live account to make purchases. It’s easy to get it, then you need to add your data bank card to purchase software. If you don’t add it, you’ll only be able to install free apps, which is logical. The menu is divided into groups. The first consists of programs and games. Then they go separately. The latter includes some application. On home page number is displayed available updates for software, if such appeared. By selecting a section, you can see the offered software, divided into different categories for ease of searching. Each application is provided with screenshots and an icon picture. The price is indicated, and it is given in the currency of the state whose information is indicated in the account. For example, I have English Account Live, prices are in pounds. When I started using Russian accounts, the price tag became in ruble equivalent. The program's rating, reviews, and its size are displayed. If you wish, you can download the demo version and try it. Before you give money for a full-fledged application. Games For those who like to play on their phone, the XboX LIVE section will be of interest. It duplicates the capabilities of the Marketplace by offering a variety of entertainment apps. The user receives a virtual character who earns new achievements over time. A separate section is allocated for five types of data. This includes news from Twitter, but without the support of the Russian Federation, weather forecasts, stock prices, European news, and currency. You can use no more than three points from the above at the same time. PhotoFun will appeal to those who like to change the faces of friends and acquaintances. A special effect is applied to the photo. Mini Diary combines text notes with pictures and geotags. Office functions The section includes applications that work with Word, Excel, Power Point and One Note. Accordingly, these are programs for text documents, tables, presentations and notes. The device allows you not only to view data on the screen, but to create new files of these types or edit existing ones. There are quite a lot of settings, it is unlikely that anyone will manually create a large presentation, but make adjustments to Text Document it will be convenient. But it is worth considering that the Word 97-2003 format cannot be edited. These steps only apply to newer versions. It all comes down to the fact that file sharing is difficult here. The document can be sent by email, uploaded to SkyDrive or to Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010. Search The dedicated key is responsible for the Yandex search engine. It opens when you click on this button and will search for data based on the words entered. You can assign another system, but it will only be Bing. Therefore, the search engine from Yandex looks more advantageous; more useful reference information is immediately displayed on the screen. Connections The smartphone supports GSM850/900/1800/1900 and WCDMA 900/2100 frequencies, provides reception speeds of up to 14.4 Mbit/s, and transmission speeds of 5.76 Mbit/s. Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n works well, reception is reliable, network passwords are saved. In this case, locking the screen causes disconnection from Wi-Fi networks. Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR will allow you to listen to music on wireless headphones. Transferring data to other devices is not possible; the phone does not allow file transfer. However, the smartphone can work as a network access point for other devices. DLNA and video calling are supported. Profiles The device offers a single sound profile. It is not possible to configure multiple alert options. At the same time, a significant drawback can be considered the combination of sound in applications and alert signals. For example, by muting the music in the player, it automatically decreases in volume for calls, SMS notifications, and alarms. It is difficult to understand what caused this logic, but in practice this option is inconvenient. Their own melodies are installed via Zune, the principle here is somewhat similar to creating a ring tone in iTunes. Battery Samsung Omnia W is equipped with a replaceable lithium-ion battery capacity 1520 mAh. According to official data, the phone operates up to 380/490 hours in GSM/WCDMA standby mode, or up to 14/6.5 hours in talk time. In practice, it turns out to be about one day, maybe two if you use the device more actively. Background updating of social networks, receiving mail, half an hour of calls, 2-3 hours of music, a dozen or two photos. Such was the daily load. The battery saving option will extend the life of the phone; it will disable some functions. Charging from a computer's USB connector is supported. The total charging time for the phone is just over an hour. In continuous video playback mode, the phone worked for 7 hours 12 minutes at maximum screen brightness with Wi-Fi turned on. Conclusion The speaker here is good and loud, with a decent amount of headroom. Skip incoming call difficult, the device rings loudly. The vibration alert is average in strength. The smartphone is still sold today, on average for 7-8 thousand rubles, thereby competing with the WP7-phone. Nevertheless, the Samsung device has many advantages: high-quality materials and workmanship, a decent screen, a good camera and player, decent battery life. The downside is that the built-in memory is not enough; I would like to get at least 16 GB. But compared to its classmates, the Samsung Omnia W looks very good. About the new mobile OS Microsoft Windows Phone is now spoken more and more often. With the arrival of Nokia, it has a much greater chance of attracting the attention of buyers. But other manufacturers are not sitting idle either. At the end of November, Samsung is introducing one of the most interesting smartphones on WP7 – model . This is the first Korean-brand Windows Phone device in Russia.

Samsung is one of those manufacturers that supports several platforms at once, including its bada. This is absolutely true, because if one declines in sales, you can reallocate resources to another. Now the priority is Android, on which Koreans have the maximum number of devices and sales. The Galaxy S II and its predecessor alone are worth it. Moreover, despite the purchase of Motorola, it is Samsung that continues to do Google smartphones under our own brand. How long the peace-friendship will last is unknown, so the Koreans are looking around and preparing possible ways other development of your portfolio. One such path is Windows Phone. The Microsoft platform clearly has less weight for Samsung than for HTC or Nokia. But, nevertheless, it cannot be ignored.

It is valuable that in these conditions the Korean company did not make its first smartphone on Windows Phone 7.5 Mango for show. This is one of the best devices on the market with Microsoft OS. There are two important points here - the cost is 15 thousand rubles and the Super AMOLED screen. As a result, Omnia W looks very decent not only against the background of HTC, but even in comparison with Nokia. The I8350 will appear at the end of November, i.e. before Nokia. Let's take a closer look at what to expect from the Koreans and compare the Samsung Omnia W with Nokia Lumia 800, HTC 7 Mozart.

Design, ergonomics

They didn’t come up with anything unique with the design of the Omnia W. This is already a familiar external Galaxy view R with minimal differences. The back has the same solid removable part: smooth plastic with a metal overlay of a different texture. Korean design in general is controversial, but here it feels like they were looking for a compromise or just one material was missing. On the other hand, metal has appeared that its predecessors did not have, and many will like it.

The Omnia W has only one color option - classic black, the most popular color option in Russia. Apart from the metal insert at the back, the case is completely plastic, but the materials are of high quality. The assembly also does not fail: no play, no creaking when squeezing - everything is excellent. I was also pleased that the case is not easily soiled. In general, externally, Omnia W is one of the most pleasant devices on WP.

Thanks to its not very large 3.7” display, the model will appeal to those who are tired of huge shovel smartphones on Android. Most Windows Phone devices come with iPhone ways not only software, but also hardware. As a result, these are small, lightweight models, even flagships (for example, Nokia Lumia 800). The Omnia W is very pleasant to hold; the dimensions and weight are perfectly balanced. The thickness is 10.9 mm and the weight is only 115.3 g. For comparison, the same Galaxy R weighs 131 g.

The elements here are all standard. 3.5 mm jack on top, microUSB on bottom, volume rocker on the left, on/off button and camera key on the right, and on the front panel there are touch elements for return and search, as well as a mechanical “home screen” button. There is a status indicator - it is convenient to see missed calls or a low battery. There is also a 0.3 MP front camera, which can be used for video telephony (by the way, for some reason it is not included in the Nokia Lumia 800).

Omnia W, according to Windows Phone rules, is equipped with a separate hardware camera button. Moreover, thanks to the features of the OS, you can quickly remove it from standby mode, even if the lock code is set. I really like this feature of WP, you can take snapshots literally on the go. But on the contrary, I don’t like another feature of this OS - the lack of a slot for a memory card. Microsoft is promoting its SkyDrive service in this way, with 25 GB available to each owner.

All Windows Phone smartphones are now based on the Qualcomm platform, and Samsung is no exception. Our hero also runs on the Qualcomm MSM 8255 chipset and has a single-core processor at 1.4 GHz. However, Windows Phone does not yet support multi-core functionality, so the decision is justified. The speed of work thanks to the fast OS is really high level. The Mango update has further improved this option. The complaints are caused by old versions of the software, which are not optimized for version 7.5 and do not even support multitasking. Gradually, there will be fewer and fewer of them; in total there are now almost 50 thousand applications for WP7.

The Omnia W has 512 MB of RAM and 8 GB of non-expandable flash memory - a standard set familiar to us from Radar and many other smartphones. It's not much, but Microsoft is limiting manufacturers by promoting its SkyDrive service. Every Windows owner Phone smartphone Instead of a memory card slot, a 25 GB “virtual” flash drive is offered. The disadvantage of this offer is that without Internet access you will not receive information. The rest is the usual set. There is Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS. The FM radio has not gone away, there is 3G support and a front camera. Omnia W also supports DLNA and Wi-Fi points. But the model does not have a TV output, but this is a small loss.

Unlike HTC Radar or Nokia Lumia 800, the battery here is removable, which is a plus. Its capacity also does not disappoint, it is 1500 mAh. Full charge about two days of average load is enough. I tested the Omnia W by playing streaming video at maximum brightness over Wi-Fi. It turned out to be 5 hours 32 minutes. MP3 files with the screen and communications turned off played for 38 hours and 11 minutes. The indicator is excellent, despite high frequency processor and a bright screen - this is due to Super AMOLED technology, which is designed for low power consumption and disconnected communications. WP7 is better optimized for runtime than Android. But constant appeal to social networks Microsoft's new operating system reduces this advantage to a minimum. If you don't use this, you get indicators at the iOS level.

The screen is one of the best among Windows Phone devices. It is second only to Nokia, but the difference is minimal, judge for yourself (Samsung on the left):

Super AMOLED 3.7" is used. The brightness and contrast are maximum, viewing angles are very wide, and the image looks very good in the sun. The technology is capacitive, the touchscreen is pleasant. For its price the best option and one of the main trump cards of Omnia W. The only thing is the resolution, like all WP smartphones, it’s 800x480. If this is normal for our hero, then it’s not enough for older flagships. Microsoft restricts manufacturers in order to defragment software and because of the Qualcomm chipset. Hopefully we'll see higher resolutions on WP in the future.

But the Omnia W camera is not the most powerful. There is 5 MP, flash and HD video recording at 720p at 30 fps. The settings are standard, nothing new. As for the quality, it is average. In low light conditions, pictures are blurred. The flash is quite powerful, but not very high quality - it distorts colors greatly. Here are examples on maximum settings qualities:

Windows Phone

Like first HTC, our hero also works under Windows control Phone version 7.5 Mango. There is multitasking, support for Russian and more than 500 changes compared to the “seven”. But the OS is still inferior in functionality and software base to more old Android, iOS and even Symbian. The most important advantage of WP is its speed. But not everyone will like the asceticism and small number of settings.

In my opinion, so far WP7 is more suitable for enthusiasts compared to older iOS, Android and even Symbian. But this is only because this is a young OS, which is only about a year old. And its growth rate is impressive.

If you need functionality (Flash, full multitasking, “live” wallpaper, etc.) or the software you need has not yet appeared, it is better to pay attention to Android, for example, to the nearest Galaxy R. Branded Samsung applications preinstalls a lot, but there is nothing special (like Nokia) among them. FunShot allows you to take pictures with different effects. The function became widespread after the introduction of the iPad 2. Another application for working with graphics is Photo Studio. This is a simple graphic editor.

The Now manager is pre-installed - it is an application for weather, news, stocks, currency and microposts. In this case, the weather can be displayed as a hub shortcut on the main screen. Perhaps this is the most useful of Samsung's proprietary software.

I liked the Samsung Omnia W. This is a small, lightweight smartphone with good characteristics, and most importantly, at an adequate price. For 14,990 rubles you get one of the most affordable Windows Phone devices in Russia. Only Nokia Lumia 710 and last year's HTC 7 Mozart can compete with it in price. Against their background, the Korean new product looks very decent, especially regarding the screen.

Of course, the Omnia W has its drawbacks, but most of them come down to Windows Phone. This is the lack of a slot for a memory card, lack of support for DivX/Xvid and Adobe Flash video, a small number of programs, etc. Someone else may miss the TV output, but I don’t consider this a serious disadvantage. If we evaluate the model within the framework of Microsoft OS competitors, then everything is fine. A serious opponent is the Nokia Lumia 800, but it is more expensive (20,990 rubles), has a non-removable battery and does not have a front camera.

Samsung debuts on Russian market Windows Phone turned out to be very promising. I recommend purchasing it if you are looking for a smartphone running Microsoft OS. True, if it is unimportant for you to take Windows Phone, then on Android there are more interesting offers for the same money, including from Samsung.
