How to make a CD from a flash drive. Creating a CD-ROM partition on flash (for Alcor AU6983, AU6984, AU6986 controllers). Possible problems and ways to solve them

Hi all! Today is an interesting topic, how to burn a disc to a flash drive! In general we read)

How to transfer from disk to flash drive?

I sometimes look at the website statistics and see what people are interested in. I have a popular topic, and usually people are looking for how to burn an image to a flash drive, and then I see a request: how to burn a disk to a flash drive... To be honest, the request sounds strange, but when I looked at how many people are trying to find how I do it, I was a little surprised, they thousands... On the site I write topics that people are interested in or need, for note) Well, here, of course, is the first option and I hope this topic will be useful to many who are looking for how to burn a disc to a flash drive 🙂

At first I also thought whether such a program had really been written, but no, I couldn’t even find it on foreign sites, it wouldn’t be safe anyway)

1. First we make a disk image

I haven’t written an article about the UltraISO program yet, but the time has come, I just have a portable version.

Launch it, insert the disc into the CD-DVD-ROM and select create a CD image.

Now we select your flash drive, format it if necessary, but when recording, the program itself will format the flash drive and click write.

All! Myth how to burn a disc to a flash drive destroyed :)

Allows you to create a CD-ROM partition on a flash drive at a low level, which will be perceived System BIOS board and operating system like a regular CD-ROM. In this case, Generic Autorun Disk appears in the list of BIOS devices on the motherboard, in the CD Drive section, from which you can boot. The size of such a CD-ROM depends only on the size of the image deployed on it boot disk. Since this partition is treated as CDFS, it becomes possible to use multiboot using BCDW. Before starting AlcorMP, you must create a boot disk image.

On my Transcend JetFlash V33 4GB I have created a bootable CD-ROM with a capacity of about 1.2 GB on which, using BCDW, it is possible to choose to load three different RAM-BOOT images of BartXPE. Loading speed of Ramboot image into memory when using CD-ROM on motherboards with BIOS AMI (ASUS P5Q, P5KPL and others) is very high. Boot.img with a volume of 480MB is downloaded in 40 seconds. Under the same conditions, it takes more than 2 minutes to load an image from a regular USB-Flash partition. Probably, the AMI BIOS for CD-ROM immediately turns on the High Speed USB2.0 mode. Unfortunately, several boards with BIOS AWARD 6.0 showed disastrous results, both with CD-ROM and with a regular USB-Flash partition. The loading time of Boot.img with a capacity of 480MB into memory is more than 10-15 minutes. On some boards, the CD-ROM is not recognized by the BIOS and, accordingly, cannot boot. On this moment With Generic Autorun Disk, it is not possible to load a regular (non-RAMBOOT) BartXPE assembly - the boot device is lost.

Do not connect the flash drive on which the CD-ROM was created while the AlcorMP program is running, just idle (for example, to watch serial number) this causes the CD-ROM to cease to be recognized in the BIOS, although there seem to be no changes in the Windows environment. If you do this, you will have to create the autorun CD-ROM again.

So, to create a CD-ROM you need to make the settings as described in the article “ Software repair USB Flash Drive using the AlcorMP utility", with the exception of the following tab.

Figure 2.1.

In the Mode tab, select the AutoRun item, and the ISO Set pop-up window should appear. Select ISO Mode and specify the path to the pre-prepared boot image. If nothing pops up when you select AutoRun, it means your AlcorMP.ini or the utility itself is corrupted (download work program AlcorMP(081208)). The section that is responsible for the location of the image looks like this:

AlcorMP.ini file

ReserveUserSize=0
GPI=0
LoaderPath=C:9384.iso
ReservePath=C:Reserve.img
Win98=0
IMGorISO=1
ISOPath=C:pebuilder.iso

When using the settings for Pure Disk (regular flash drive), the following lines are missing:

IMGorISO=1
ISOPath=C:pebuilder.iso

The final settings window for creating a CD-ROM looks like this.

Figure 2.2.

Next, we proceed as described in “Program USB repair Flash Drive using the AlcorMP utility”, after completing the program (and closing the window) and jerking the USB Flash Drive, we get the following picture.
The XPE (G:) 1.2 GB disk is a CD-ROM, the TRANSCEND (H:) disk is a section of a regular Flash Drive, FAT32 2.7 GB (see Figure 2.3).

The list of controllers on which CD-ROM is successfully created is AU6983, AU6984, AU6986.
Failed to create CD-ROM partition on AU6982 controller. If you managed to create a CD-ROM using AU6980, AU6981, AU6982, AU9380, please report it in the forum, mentioning the name of the flash drive, controller type, PID&VID, version of the Alcor utility and other features (if any).

Figure 2.3.

Questions about CD-ROM creation sections on Alcor controllers are discussed in this forum thread.

Yes, yes, it is the CD-ROM section, you understood everything absolutely correctly, and now I will teach you everything, but before continuing, let me write one small formality: The author is not responsible to users and (or) other organizations and third parties for any failures, delays, incorrect operation, deletion or loss of any user information, as well as any damage associated with the use software posted in this thread.

So first, let's figure out what a CD-ROM is?
The abbreviation CD-ROM stands for Compact Disc Read-Only Memory. In our Russian, this means a CD whose memory is read-only.
The relevance of creating such a partition on a USB drive is certainly growing, and for a variety of reasons, most often it is related to installing an OS or creating a bootable LiveCD. In my case this is true. Due to the hackneyed question of how to still make an installation USB flash drive with Windows XP, it repeatedly prompted me to think like this, but since there was no time to deal with it, I was content with the grub4dos bootloader, but in the end I decided to abandon it.

So what are the advantages of creating such a CD-ROM partition?
1. The ability to burn any disk image, of any size (the only limitation is the size of the flash drive itself)
2. This CD-ROM partition will be recognized by the system as a CD reader.
3. The functions of the flash drive will also be preserved. The CD-ROM partition will be exactly the size of the disk image you burn. Let's say if we have a flash drive with a capacity of 16GB and we write a disk image there equal to 1GB, then we will have a CD-ROM partition equal to 1GB, and the remaining 15GB will be like the memory of a regular flash drive.
4. This CD-ROM partition will be recognized by the computer as physical, which will allow you to boot from it by setting the BIOS to boot from a USB-CDROM; it will also be possible to boot from the flash drive itself.
All this was checked by me personally as follows:
On my 16GB flash drive, a CD-ROM partition was created with the Windows XP installation distribution, which weighed 593MB. The image is original and was recorded "as is". The remaining volume was recorded with the installation Windows distribution 7. The computer was successfully able to recognize and load what I needed, and there were no conflicts between the loaders, because they are located independently of each other.

We'll get to the creation process a little later. While we are writing comments, naturally observing the forum rules.

Now we will look at the process of creating a USB CD-ROM partition on a flash drive controlled by a USBest controller. You can find out which controller your flash drive is controlled by in two ways:
1. Remove the flash drive casing and look at the chip markings.
2. Use a great program... MPInfoCheck

So, we run the program and see:
....
A flash drive on the USBest UT165 controller, in my opinion, by the way, this is one of the best controllers, since it is detected almost everywhere.

After we have found out the controller labeling, we take the service utility.... UFDUtility (works with controllers (UT162; UT163; UT165; UT190; IT1167; IT1168; IT1169). and launch Autorun Manager as shown in the screenshot:
....

All CD-ROM partition is created!

In fact, the program wrote that the device is not connected, and this is not surprising, since this program works with flash drives on the USBest controller, and you have a JetFlash flash drive, which is most likely on the Alcor Micro controller, but I can’t say which series, I’m not a telepath

Message from amen51:

And what to do about this trouble?
I have Win7 x32 installed. Flash drives: JetFlash TS4GJFV10 (4 GB) and General USB Flash Disk (16 GB).
I made a 4 GB flash drive multiboot - it works great. I tried to do the same with a 16 GB flash drive. It only works in test mode and does not boot from it.

I can’t say anything about the 16GB, since it’s not at all clear what manufacturer you have this flash drive, but as for JetFlash, I can recommend a program that works with flash drives on the Alcor Micro controller (again, if I’m not mistaken, this is the controller that this flash drive works on) , this is just my guess).

Create a bootable USB flash drive with Windows XP or txtsetup.sif is damaged

In the previous article, how to create a bootable USB flash drive (Part 1), we looked at how to use UltraISO programs Write the image of the desired distribution to a flash drive. But there is some drawback in this method.
After writing a Windows XP image to a flash drive, when trying to boot from the flash drive, an error occurs: txtsetup.sif is damaged or missing, position 18
This problem is solved as follows:
You must use another method to create a bootable USB flash drive, which is described below.
So, let's begin.
First, we need to format our flash drive. Let's do it standard means.
Go to My Computer, click right click on the flash drive and click “Format”
....

Now open the program WinSetupFromUsb
you can download here WinSetupFromUsb.rar
The program does not require installation.
Choosing Bootice
....
In the window that opens, click Perform Format
....
Select USB-HDD mode (Single Partition) and click Next Step. We agree with everything and wait until the process is over.
....
....
Afterwards we exit all secondary windows, leaving only the main one, WinSetupFromUsb.
Check the box next to Windows 2000/XP/2003 Setup and select our folder with Windows XP, which we previously prepared by unpacking it from ISO image(you can unpack using WinRAR, for example, or another program).
....
And press GO
....
If everything is successful, then at the end we will see the Job done message.
Congratulations, our bootable flash drive ready with Windows XP.
When the computer boots, we see a boot window with 2 items: Start PLoP boot manager
Windows XP/2000/2003 Setup
Select item 2, it contains an item starting with the words First Part... and begin Windows installation XP from a flash drive.
By the way, here we describe possible problems that may arise when installing this Windows XP from a flash drive, and their solutions.

How to burn a flash drive to avoid this error, for this you need the WinSetupFromUsb program, with old version there were no problems with this program, but new version This program is missing some items, without which it is impossible to correctly write a Win XP image to a flash drive. Does anyone know an easier way to write XP to a flash drive so that this error does not occur?
I want to use latest version WinSetupFromUsb, does anyone know how to use it correctly to write an XP image to a USB flash drive?

On one forum I also read “copy txtsetup.sif from I386 to the root of the memory card and rename I386 to $WIN_NT$.~BT”, but this did not help me, the error does not occur, the netbook just constantly reboots automatically.

It is easier to reprogram the flash drive so that it is physically detected as a CD-ROM device. The process is completely reversible. I can help with this.

Thanks, I didn't think about that, I'll try it now.

Message from BEOWULF1986:

Please write how to make a CD-ROM from a flash drive? I didn't find a way for my USB flash drives (Silicon Power LuxMini 720 8GB) on the PS2250 controller. Is it possible to make a CD-ROM from a flash drive without a controller (SD memory card)?

As for memory cards, I’ll say right away that it won’t work, we’ll try with a flash drive. First, check whether your flash drive is recognized by the program in the attachment?

After all, I made a CD-ROM partition on a Silicon Power LuxMini 720 8GB flash drive. Its controller was identified more accurately; it turned out to be PHISON PS2******0-F. Recorded a section on this CD-ROM Windows image XP SP3. Windows and BIOS see 2 flash drive partitions (regular and CD-ROM) without any problems, I select bootable usb CD-ROM, Windows XP installation begins, the "txtsetup.sif is corrupt" error no longer occurs. This CD-ROM partition is a handy thing; you can burn any Live CD onto it and pull it out necessary files from drive C of the killed Windows before reinstalling, or try to restore Windows without reinstalling. To create the partition I used the Phison MPALL v3.29.0B program.

In general, open AlcorMP.exe, after determining the type of flash drive controller, go to Setup, there in the Mode tab, on the right there is a toggle switch for AutoRun-> ISO Mode. In File Path we specify the path to the image file. Click “OK” everywhere and “Start” in the main program window.

It’s strange that I did this last time, but everything happened quickly and there was no drive. Everything worked out, but immediately when I started installing Windows, I got a blue screen when checking devices)))

In general, I deleted the drive right now and I’ll try this... - the program has already been updated +1******0 times, maybe it will work, if not, then you’ll have to torture the flash drive with the drive again.

This method can be useful for computer repair technicians, those who like to “experiment” with software and hardware, as well as the average person who finds themselves in a difficult situation.

Creating a bootable CD-ROM area on a USB flash drive

By modern standards, the disk is outdated, and the presence of a disk drive on a computer basically only means that its hardware is outdated. But what to do if there is no DVD ROM and the computer does not support installing Windows from a flash drive? Unfortunately, from time to time we have to deal with reinstalling the OS, and installing an OS from a disk is still relevant and in demand today. What to do, how to give up disks forever? Use USB drives! Despite the fact that some people have more questions about installing from USB than from a disk, USB still has many advantages.

  1. Restoring PC functionality. Having a USB with a set of emulated disks gives you a better chance of repairing your old computer. And it's better than carrying a set of disks with you.
  2. The disks are outdated, they wear out quickly and quickly become unusable when transferred.
  3. The most capacious, even advanced drives, are not able to accommodate such volumes of data as USB drives offer. Plus the reading speed is faster.
  4. The disk drive has long been no longer an important part of the PC, and throwing money away on them just because you need to load the OS is a waste of money.

And so the general meaning of the operation is that our flash drive would be defined by the computer as a CD rom, that is, the flash drive will have a CD - the area in which the image will be mounted, and the computer will recognize the flash drive as a CD rom.

Let's look at the general process of turning a USB flash drive into DVD-R drive with a disk image mounted in it. Or rather, simply put, let's create a flash drive with the OS for installation on a computer. This manipulation will save you from the need to use disks when installing the OS and at the same time set the BIOS to Boot loading from a flash drive, plus if you have old computer The BIOS may not have such a function at all. Similar image emulation and creation of drive visibility is available in one of the flash drive modes, thanks to the efforts of manufacturers. But, unfortunately, the firmware of the chip itself is not disclosed and programs with drivers, manuals and instructions are not distributed officially. You have to look for them all over the Internet.

Here I will try to break down point by point what approximately needs to be done to flash the flash drive and mount the image on it. And below I will give a specific example using Kingston flash drives as an example.

  1. We need to determine the values PID And VID, as well as the chipset manufacturer.

This can be done using the program ChipGenius. It is best to save the data you receive. They may be needed in case of unsuccessful firmware. Can they also be recognized using the standard capabilities of Windows itself? That is, through the “Task Manager”.

  1. We enter the PID or VID into the database on the page http://flashboot.ru/iflash/. There we will find out which programs are designed to work with our flash drive.
  2. And then comes the theory, because in most cases each program has a different interface and algorithm. But in general terms, I will try to theoretically and universally explain the subsequent process.
  3. Connection USB storage to PC.
  4. Launch the program whose name was determined in step 2.
  5. In the utility you need to obtain information about the flash drive and understand the main interface.
  6. In the settings, enter the data for creating the CD area. Data that you can duplicate from the source on the program instructions page.
  7. After all that has been done, you will be able to use the flash drive exactly as DVD-Rom drive, and the PC will see the image disk recorded on the flash drive, like a disk inserted into a CD rom.

For example, you have Kingston flash drive 8Gb DataTraveler 101 with Skymedi chip for working with flash drive chipsets there is a program SK6211_20090227_BA.exe. We connect the flash drive, launch the program. Click -->Advanced -->in the Password window enter 123456 and click Check.

In the menu Code Bank ver. choose last base data. Click Multi-Partition.

In the window in the upper left corner, check the box Enable CD-ROM, if you need to split it into CD-ROM, and some into flash+Flash sections. Don't forget to set the partition size.

At the top right is the Enable CD-Rom Booting checkbox, that is, make the D-ROM bootable, after which you need to specify the path to the OS image.

We set the autorun counter parameter, this parameter is responsible for the number of times it boots from a flash drive, so that the process is endless, we set the value 255 (==unlimited)
