Two years ago, the main embarrassment in the history of Samsung’s mobile division occurred: the Galaxy Note 7 turned out to be a time bomb, so it was quickly removed from sale. That story ended not only with humiliating apologies on his knees, but also with tremendous work on mistakes - the neat and stylish Galaxy S8 made us forget about the disaster with explosive flagships.

That phone was praised even by those who previously considered Koreans tasteless in terms of design. Compared to the archaic iPhone 7, the Galaxy S8 looked like a device from the future - thanks to its thin frames, “infinite” curved display and OLED matrix.

True, after this local triumph, Samsung relaxed again and presented the frankly passable and boring Galaxy S9. The public reacted to him quite unequivocally: “It’s great that the S8 will now become cheaper.” Stores even had to artificially slow down the G8 interface so that when comparing models, customers would choose the newer and more expensive one.

As a result, 2018 remained with Apple. While Samsung bosses were studying sad financial statements and reading news with headlines like “Galaxy S9 is selling worse than Galaxy S3,” the whole world was copying the cutout of the iPhone X. At the same time, two more holidays happened in Cupertino: first, the average price of one smartphone jumped to $700 (crazy level), and then the company broke through the capitalization of one trillion dollars.

Now the Koreans are forced to respond. Against the backdrop of the release of the iPhone XS and iPhone XR, insights about the Galaxy S10 for some reason went into the shadows, but they definitely cannot be neglected. There is reason to believe that this gadget will become no less resonant than the Galaxy S8 - at least, all preliminary information points to the gigantic potential of this model.

1. Apparently, the smartphone will debut in January. Samsung is forced to postpone the announcement in order to quickly respond to a pack of new smartphones from Apple. Previously, the Koreans consistently rolled out their flagships at the end of winter or early spring. The conclusion is very simple: now Asians are eager to demonstrate a revolutionary model.

2. The main feature of the Galaxy S10 is the disappearing front camera. It will be sewn directly into the display - the module will be noticeable only in those moments when the user starts selfie mode. There has never been anything like this on the market before. For example, the Chinese, who want to hide the camera, put it inside the case and install a mechanism that quickly pushes the lens out. Samsung solution much more technologically advanced and elegant.

3. The Galaxy S10 will not have a so-called chin, that is, a lower indentation. Now all models except the iPhone X have it. The reason is simple: to destroy this area, you need to order an expensive curved screen. The Chinese don’t see the point in this, but the Koreans did, and they clearly set themselves the task of releasing a completely frameless flagship. No unibrows, no unnecessary space - just display and nothing else. Again, history may repeat itself with the Galaxy S8 and iPhone 7: the iPhone XS notch will seem antediluvian next to the perfectly frameless S10.

4. According to insiders, the Galaxy S10 will be released in three variations: budget, standard and premium. The first two are not very interesting, but the third is a catalog of elite specifications. Firstly, there will be lightning scanner fingerprint directly under the display (another technology that Apple has not conquered). Secondly, the Koreans will install a triple main camera module in the coolest S10 - like in the Huawei P20 Pro. In terms of camera, design, and exclusive features, the Galaxy S10 will look much more preferable than boring and expensive new Apple products. The only question is how well it will turn out to be implemented. On paper, the S10's specs are impressive, but in reality, shortcomings can pop up in the most unexpected places. Suffice it to recall previous Samsung flagships:

1.Galaxy S8- was good for almost everyone, but the Koreans screwed up with the fingerprint scanner. At first they didn’t plan to put it there at all (they thought they’d get by with a face recognizer), and then they stuck it in the most inconvenient place - on the side of the camera. As a result, users became annoyed due to the fact that their fingers hit everything except the sensor. Samsung's arrogance is to blame here - apparently, they decided that since they were offering four different ways unlocking, then it no longer matters how well they work.

The first rumors about new Samsung Galaxy S10 appeared online six to seven months before 2019. If you believe the leaks, we are waiting for the most unexpected flagship from the South Korean company in the last couple of years. In fact, the manufacturer is ready to completely “reformat” the top Galaxy S line.

Representatives of Samsung itself have so far commented rather evasively on the appearance and capabilities of the future Galaxy S10. For example, Won Oh Hyun, chief executive of the corporation, made a statement according to which the smartphone will receive “very important” changes in terms of design. But he didn’t specify which ones exactly.

Here we should remember that the current Galaxy S9 and the previous S8 are almost like twin brothers. Similarly, the Galaxy S6 and S7 were not much different from each other. From this we can conclude that the Koreans update the design every two years, so in the case of the Samsung Galaxy S10, the time for change has definitely come.

Looking ahead, we’ll say that Samsung is preparing this time, in addition to the quite predictable “regular” Galaxy S10 and large Galaxy S10+ (Plus), a third smartphone with a flat 5.8-inch screen. It should be remembered here that all the company’s flagships starting with Note 7 have had a display curved at the edges.

Much more innovations are expected in technically. Firstly, it is the ability to connect to fifth generation networks. Secondly, working with faster LPDDR5 RAM. Thirdly, support for high-speed memory UFS 3.0. Fourthly, there is a fingerprint scanner built into the display.

Let's say in 2016 the company was developing Galaxy version Note 7 with a flat screen, but it did not go into production.

Here, many will remember the sad story of the seventh Note, which was preparing to be released with great fanfare. Moreover, at the very beginning, this model sold out at such a speed that even the company itself did not count on. Alas, this success was destined to be cut short due to problems with the battery, which could spontaneously explode.

As a result, Samsung was forced to recall the entire circulation of the unsuccessful Note 7 and suffer heavy costs, both financial and reputational. Ultimately, the smartphone was reborn literally like a phoenix from the ashes as the Galaxy Note FE, but that was a completely different story.

However, let's return to the Samsung Galaxy S10. According to insiders, it will be released in the following variants:

  • The simplest Galaxy S10R (Retro) with a 5.8-inch flat screen and a single main camera. The name Samsung Galaxy S10R first appeared in a publication by the online publication Slashgear ().

The question of cost remains. The easiest way is to “predict” the price of the base version of the Samsung Galaxy S10. Most likely, in the US this smartphone will cost from $999 when purchased without signing a contract with a mobile operator. The Galaxy S10R variant could cost as little as $749, while the Plus could cost all of $1,099 or so.

Of course, all these are just hypotheses. We will find out how it will actually be no earlier than February 2019. It should be noted that the stakes for Samsung are now quite high, since sales of the “ninth Galaxy” turned out to be unexpectedly low (although this was quite predictable in the absence of qualitative differences from its predecessor).

Design and ergonomics

The data at our disposal is not yet enough to completely recreate the appearance of the Samsung Galaxy S10. Presumably, the smartphone screen will be elongated, the aspect ratio will be 9 to 19 with a Wide QHD+ resolution of 1440 × 3040 pixels. In this case, the rectangular shape without cutouts will be preserved.

There is a version that instead of a cutout, Samsung will make small holes for the camera and sensors, which will be invisible when using the standard design theme. However, at the moment it’s hard to believe in this (but anything can happen).

Most likely, the Galaxy S10 will have a noticeable indentation at the top for the front camera, but the rest of the frames around the display will be practically absent. This is, by the way, how most conceptual renderings from third-party designers present the smartphone.

Like most of its predecessors, the Samsung Galaxy S10 will be produced both on Samsung's own chipsets and on top solutions from Qualcomm. In the first case it is Exynos 9820, in the second it is Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 (or 865).

Each of these chips is interesting in its own way. Let's start with the Exynos 9820. Samsung is one of the few companies in the world that produces mobile processors for smartphones. At the moment, its equipment allows printing 7-nanometer chips using EUV lithography.

In perspective this technology will make it relatively easy to switch to a 5 nm and even 3 nm process technology. For comparison, Taiwanese TSMC, which produces chips for the American Qualcomm, is still using DUV lithography, which has long been mastered, but the 7 nm process technology is the “ceiling” for it.

By reducing the distance between transistors and reducing their dimensions, a thinner process technology, even without improvements in microprocessor architecture, improves performance while reducing power consumption. However, the advantages of the Samsung Exynos 9820 do not end there.

New custom Exynos M4 cores promise excellent computing power. The Galaxy S10 prototype was able to score as much as 12,246 points in the multi-core test of the popular GeekBench benchmark and 4089 in the single-core test in the summer. The first result is much better than even the latest .

The ARM Mali-G76 graphics accelerator built into the Exynos 9820 also deserves special mention. It is already used by the chipset for Huawei flagships, which has shown excellent results in synthetic 3D graphics tests.

What about Qualcomm Snapdragon 855? A test prototype of a device based on it has already appeared on Geekbench, albeit with a more modest result than in the case of Exynos. However, at this stage it is not possible to judge strictly the performance.

3697 points in the GeekBench single-core test and 10469 in the multi-core test. In our opinion, it’s very good.

There are rumors that in order to get a head start and push aside competitors, Samsung will again reach an agreement with Qualcomm and reserve for itself the entire first batch of future Snapdragon 855. Thus, for up to a month, its flagships can become the very best, at least among smartphones based on Android.

By random access memory the data is like this. Firstly, a transition to faster LPDDR5 chips is expected (but not a fact yet, especially since high-speed LPDDR4x RAM has appeared with a frequency of 2133 MHz versus the current 1866 MHz). Secondly, all versions of the Samsung Galaxy S10 will finally receive 8 GB of RAM.

The minimum amount of internal memory promises to be 128 GB, as in the case of the already released Galaxy Note 9. At the same time, the “junior” Galaxy S10 Lite may also receive a cheaper modification that has only 64 GB of RAM. The maximum capacity of the internal flash drive will be 512 Gb.

Despite this increase, Samsung should retain the card slot MicroSD memory. As a result, the maximum amount of internal storage after installing an additional card will be up to 1 terabyte! At this point, we suggest finishing the hardware questions and moving on to other components.

The design was discussed above. Now let's talk about the technical characteristics of the Galaxy S10 screen. Let's start with the fact that it is based on a 5.8-inch Super AMOLED matrix with an aspect ratio of 9 to 19 and a QHD+ resolution of 1440x3040 pixels.

Due to the absence of “monobrow” type cutouts, the entire “rectangle” is available to the user, except for the curved side edges. The latter are an integral attribute Samsung flagships over the past two years. On the outside, the Galaxy S10's screen is protected by impact-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 6.

Firstly, the actual implementation of 5G networks may take at least several years. Yes, in some countries they are already being tested with all their might, and in the USA, for example, Verizon has begun commercial operation of them and even offers a special version of one of them Motorola smartphones with the corresponding module.

Secondly, Samsung itself is still skeptical about plans to switch to 5G in the foreseeable future. According to leaks, only a special modification of the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, intended for sale exclusively in South Korea, will receive support for fifth-generation networks.

In general, it’s worth remembering that Samsung’s transition to 4G also took quite a long time. Thus, the Samsung Galaxy S3 (I9305), released in 2012, acquired LTE support, but even in 2014, among the company’s flagships there were modifications without network support fourth generation, for example Galaxy Note 4 SM-N910H.

As for the number of SIM cards, three variants of the Galaxy S10 are expected:

  • Samsung Galaxy S10 Duos or Dual-SIM, which has two slots for Nano-SIM format SIM cards (the second is combined with MicroSD)
  • The “American” Samsung Galaxy S10 Duos, which has one SIM card slot in the physical Nano-SIM format, and the second in a virtual e-SIM (this technology is still approved for use in a few countries).
  • “Single-SIM” Samsung Galaxy S10 Single SIM, which will be sold in some countries.

If we talk about the rest of the communication interfaces of the “anniversary” Galaxy S, then no special breakthrough is expected there. Well, perhaps there may be support for the third WiFi band 60 GHz (IEEE 802.11ad) and Bluetooth 5.1, but this is more of an evolution than a revolution.

Cameras

As mentioned above, the Samsung Galaxy S10 itself should receive a dual main camera similar to the one that the Galaxy Note 9 already has: two modules with a resolution of 12 MP, one of which will be equipped with wide-angle optics, and the second - a “telephoto” with a double zoom

Of course, options such as support for DualPixel technology, optical stabilization images and phase detection autofocus. However, the main bet will not be placed on these options, which are quite standard for flagship smartphones nowadays, but on “smart” algorithms using machine learning.

As for the large Galaxy S10 Plus, this device is predicted to have a triple main camera. At the moment, Samsung is already testing this using an example. Only if the latter has one main, one wide-angle and one “technical” module for measuring the depth of space, then everything will be different with the S10+.

It is expected that it will be equipped with three 12-megapixel sensors with different optics. As a result, the camera of this smartphone will be able to shoot both portraits and landscapes, and bring rather distant objects closer. At the moment, even the “three-chamber” Huawei P20 Pro cannot do this.

Among other rumors about the Samsung Galaxy S10: a dual front camera with a resolution of 8 MP + 8 MP, autofocus and the ability to measure spatial depth. A separate case is the Galaxy S10 Lite, which will supposedly have two single cameras without unnecessary bells and whistles.

Sensors and biometrics

The Samsung Galaxy S10 will receive a long-awaited option that has been expected for at least a year since the release of the Galaxy Note 8: an in-screen fingerprint scanner. Despite the fact that the Koreans announced the development of the corresponding module quite a long time ago, in the end the Chinese were ahead of them (see).

The face scanner should also undergo changes and become more accurate, reliable and secure. It is quite possible that this is precisely why Samsung wants to install a dual main camera, which would allow obtaining a three-dimensional model of the face for subsequent processing using machine learning algorithms.

Autonomy

Good news: in 2019, Samsung is finally going to increase the battery capacity of its flagships, something its management has been careful not to do since the release of the scandalous Galaxy Note 7, which exploded due to problems with the battery (when heated, the battery became “crowded” due to the dense layout).

Over the past couple of years, more advanced Li-Ion batteries have been developed, which, with the same dimensions, have large capacity. According to rumors, the basic modification of the Galaxy S10 will receive a battery with a capacity of 3600 mAh, and the Galaxy S10 Plus will have all 4200, like the Huawei Mate 20.

Other features: support fast charging Samsung Adaptive Fast Charging (for Exynos-based models) or Qualcomm QuickCharge 3.0 (for Snapdragon), fast wireless charger according to Qi and PMA standards. Effective energy-saving technologies will allow the Galaxy S10 to work up to one and a half days on a single charge.

Software

At the moment it is known that all modifications of the Samsung Galaxy S10 will be the company's first smartphones that will work under Android control 9.0 Pie with Experience 10.0 proprietary shell and updated “smart” voice assistant Bixby.

The only thing that can be “limping” in this case is the quality of firmware optimization. As a rule, with similar hardware, smartphones from OnePlus, Xiaomi and other Samsung competitors have been faster than the top-end Galaxy S for a couple of years now. In general, the Koreans have something to work on.

In our opinion, it is too early to draw conclusions about the Samsung Galaxy S10, since many characteristics are known only by rumors or there is no data on them at all.
