Design

And yet, it's still a great phone that I, like many of you, was initially skeptical about. It has a beautiful five-inch display, loud speaker, acceptable-good (especially for such a screen) operating time and powerful processor. Let's look at all aspects in more detail.

Contents of delivery

The first question I have is how do HTC themselves understand all the diversity of this device - what is “our” version of the device? An easy search on the Internet showed that I received the x920e model for testing, which differs from the rest right from the box - following the precepts of the HTC One X, it uses a neat “point-and-shoot” box made from recycled cardboard. However, it says x920d (Taiwanese brother), which is an outright lie - at least the device itself does not have a slot for a microSD card, and the box looks different. Confused? Are you sealed? One way or another, this “surprise” may confuse a potential buyer after opening the package.

In the box itself you will find a USB cable, a charger adapter, earbud headphones of mediocre quality, a bunch of instructions and a “clip” with which you can remove the microSIM card slot. Nothing surprising, but nothing bad either, everything is more than standard.





Appearance

The phone is quite simple in appearance, without any special design frills - long and thin, the black oblong “brick” does not leave any emotions, neither negative nor positive. The layout of the controls is quite standard for latest smartphones company – three touch keys (“back”, “home” and recent menu running applications) with red backlighting are located under the large, five-inch screen, while the “HTC” logo, a thin speaker slot and the front camera are above it. Also, thanks to this coating, the phone leaves a very pleasant impression from simple interaction with the display - you want to touch it, swipe and tap. A very important factor that most manufacturers for some reason forget about is tactile sensations not only from the body, but also from the screen.

How well done protective glass, the case is so poorly made - although it has a solid, high-quality build, it itself is glossy, very easily soiled (even more so than in the Galaxy S3, where the situation was somehow saved by its double layer of plastic) and very slippery. The back of the phone almost instantly becomes greasy, no matter how often and thoroughly you wash/wipe your hands, it becomes stained and begins to look downright obscene. All stains, scratches and dust are immediately visible in any more or less bright lighting and viewing angle, which is especially striking at this time of year. I saw a phone that had been in use for a long time - a very, very sad sight.


However, everyone is different, and personally, I didn’t find any terrible scratches on my sample (until I turned on a very bright 1000-watt lamp), despite the fact that I handled the phone quite carelessly - it fell out several times me from my pocket onto the parquet, but not a single trace of “flight” appeared on it. Perhaps it's just plain luck.

The back cover is as simple as the front - the camera “eye” and flash at the top, the “htc” logo pressed into the case in the middle and an inconspicuous loudspeaker with the beats logo at the bottom.


HTC remains true to its traditions, which I cannot approve of - with quite impressive dimensions (141 x 70.5 x 9.08 mm), the power button is still located on the top end of the device, and it is here, in this model, that it began to move away from more or less acceptable position on the right, smoothly moving to the center. It’s difficult to say why this was done, but the former place of the button was taken by a slot for a microSIM card, to remove which you need the now standard “clip”; On the left there is a 3.5 mm miniJACK connector and a second microphone for noise reduction.



At the bottom end there is a microUSB port, which is covered with a cap. As I already mentioned, the phone is splash-proof and even has an appropriate certificate of protection, but personally I don’t like plugs (at least this type - those hanging on an “elastic band”), they are inconvenient to use, in this particular case it is quite problematic to close it - yet and thin, just behold, it will break in half.


I’ll devote a few words to the LED notification identifier. The first one is hidden directly in the top speaker on the front panel... But there is also a second one! It is located on the back of the phone just to the left of the camera eye - the brightness is average and, if you don’t know, you might not even realize that behind the patterned perforated “flower” there is another glowing light bulb.


There are no other controls on the phone, except for the volume key - it is three-position, located on right side and has a small radial section, which simplifies the task if necessary, to find it “blindly”. The key travel is small, but distinct; I did not experience any lack of information content when pressing.




Screen

When people ask me why HTC is better than Samsung, I always immediately answer: “screen.” Starting with HTC One X, the company began to build in absolutely magical displays, perfectly readable in the sun, with a deep black level and at the same time free from any “vigor” or excessive oversaturation of colors (at the same time, one would not dare to call them faded).

Here it doesn’t disappoint either - five-inch, bright and colorful, without an air gap and equipped with some exorbitant number of dots per inch (resolution 1920x1080), the SLCD3 butterfly display rightfully takes its place in the echelon of the best - among Apple iPhone 5, MEIZU MX2 and Nokia Lumia 920, beating the latter in quality white, there is no such distinct yellowness here, although the color rendition itself is warm, which is noticeable in the comparison pictures with the iPhone 5 below.




The use of FullHD resolution for me personally is a controversial issue; if there is a difference in comparison with the usual 1280x720/768, it is very insignificant and is noticeable only in the outlines of small fonts and in games (as if anti-aliasing was turned on). That same vague concept of “retina” is present here in full, it feels like you’re reading a newfangled glossy magazine (top: iPhone 5).


Viewing angles, whether vertical or horizontal, are almost maximum, the image does not lose its color, no inverted colors or strange effects appear, only the brightness drops slightly. The responsiveness of the display is excellent - all presses are well registered, and there is no excessive sensitivity when the phone performs any action from any sigh. Multi-touch is available, it works well and the standard 10 clicks are processed clearly, without a hitch. By the way, a use was found for it in Sense UI - the trick of transferring an image by swiping up with three fingers to the nearest HD TV migrated straight from the same X (HTC Media Link HD), this is good news - it’s convenient to show images and videos to friends or relatives while visiting.





Signal quality, performance, power consumption and heat dissipation

Usually I devote only a couple of lines to the quality of communication signal reception, but here I would like to highlight this point in more detail - the device turned out to be very ambiguous. On the one hand, it perfectly conveys the speech of the interlocutor, it sounds clear and very loud, sometimes you get the feeling that there he is, speaking directly into your ear. Unfortunately, this is overshadowed by the quality of data reception and transmission via mobile internet. I don’t know why - either the model is defective, or this is a general ailment, but this the only phone in my practice, which, in conditions of poor reception, does not hesitate to work approximately 30% of the time via GPRS (while other phones quietly “pull” EDGE and, in some cases, even HSDPA/HSDPA+), and this is not some kind of placebo effect , no - I am often literally limited in my actions, since I often see that the smartphone is not even able to load the Twitter feed through the standard client (which does not have image previews and generally works better than all others in conditions of poor reception), not to mention about some more severe, demanding modes of use. On the one hand, it is possible to use the phone in WiFi access point mode, on the other hand, there is no need for this, since Butterfly often simply cannot cope with the incoming load. Sad but true.

Let's move on from sad things to more lively moments, namely productivity. The “heart” of the phone is a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor (APQ 8064), operating at a frequency of 1.5 GHz - it can be reduced by standard means to ~ 1.2 GHz, if necessary, by activating the power saving mode in the system. Per processing 3D graphics the Adreno 320 graphics chip is responsible - one of the most powerful solutions on the market, with the exception of the chips used in the Galaxy S4 and HTC One; it is more than enough for almost all everyday tasks; only in the most difficult (and unoptimized) games do slight stutters appear. It is worth noting that the graphics in the games are “simplified”, without additional special effects that can be found on the same iPhone 5.

The main feature of the processor is its low heat generation and power consumption - with a lithium-polymer battery of a measly 2020 mAh, the phone can almost always withstand the notorious daylight hours, just don’t lean too hard on games. However, I would recommend having Charger or a portable battery - just to be on the safe side. The phone practically does not heat up during use, the heat spreads evenly... across the front panel of the device, I personally see this for the first time - over time the display heats up, not the back cover, a very unusual experience.

The most pleasant aspect of the “hardware” component is the large amount of RAM – here there is as much as 2 GB of it, which allows you to accelerate Android “to its fullest”; no page reloads in the browser, random self-closing applications, etc. were noticed (an ailment that the predecessor One X suffered especially badly from).

Camera and sound

The phone is equipped with an 8-megapixel camera with a back-illuminated sensor (BSI), a dedicated ImageChip image processing chip that takes the load off the processor while shooting. Continuous shooting up to 99 frames (up to 4 frames per second), autofocus and the ability to take 6MP pictures while recording video are present.

Unlike One, with which this moment things are completely unclear, the “butterfly” is doing more than well - the phone takes excellent pictures and is only occasionally inferior to such masters as the Galaxy S3 and iPhone 5, producing a picture almost comparable to them (let’s not remember the Nokia 808 PureView, it is higher than all the current smartphones). To be more convincing, it was decided to devote a separate article in which the Apple iPhone 5, HTC One and Butterfly will be compared - carefully follow the articles on our website.

After several weeks of using the smartphone HTC Butterfly S I decided to combine all the material on it into one. Since I’m not chasing the number of letters in the review, there will be a minimum of “water” and no longer actual screenshots of benchmarks, but only the important points listed, in my opinion, and a lot of videos. The updated “butterfly” received the same filling as in the Galaxy S4 LTE (SoC Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 CPU: 4 core 1.9GHz Krait 300, 2Gb RAM, Adreno 320@450Mhz) and became slightly faster in performance than the HTC One (CPU 4 core 1.7GHz, Adreno 320@400Mhz). Wherein HTC Butterfly S received the same 5" FullHD Super LCD3 screen as in the previous model, but now covered with glass Gorilla® Glass 3.

The HTC Butterfly S is available in several colors and, unfortunately, in a glossy case, but the Butterfly S smartphone has two speakers, like the HTC One, a slot for microSD cards and a capacious 3200mAh battery.

Excellent sound quality in the headphones (tested with Sennheiser IE 60), which is many times better than in the HTC One, perhaps the Butterfly S has a different audio chip or the Taiwanese have configured everything as it should... Of all the startup phones that I have had, I like it the most I liked the sound of the Butterfly S.

Butterfly S fits well in the hand due to the rounded back cover. If your hands are oily or sweaty, then the smartphone may slip out of your hands due to the glossy back cover, but so far there have been no falls). On the positive side: no fingerprints are visible on back cover, like scratches, but time will tell.

The screen is simply super (5.0" Super LCD 3 FullHD 440ppi, Gorilla Glass 3). Excellent color rendition, contrast and viewing angles.

The screen has an oleophobic coating. The finger glides across the screen very nicely with minimal friction. The best performance of all smartphones. Closer to the edges, the glass is slightly rounded, which makes using various swipes super convenient.

As in the case of HTC One, the Butterfly S can also be found in warm tones (6500k) and cool tones (> 7000k). Also, screens may vary in contrast and brightness. In any case, the screens are perfectly readable in the sun and are only slightly inferior in brightness iPhone screen 5.

This time I came across a screen in warm colors, which, in my opinion, has a slightly lower brightness than it was on my HTC One.

Warm-toned screens clearly benefit from truer blacks, while cooler tones produce blacks with a more noticeable blue tint. In any case, the eyes quickly get used to both cold (the screen turns blue) and warm (yellow) screens.

As for the autonomy of the Butterfly S (3200mAh battery) in video playback mode and maximum load, I recommend that you read the test results below.

In mixed operating mode (web, twitter, mail, youtube, etc.), Wi-Fi is on, screen brightness is 30-40%, 3G is off, mail and Twitter synchronization is on. I've been getting up 7:30 – 8 hours of screen time(in the same mode, HTC One showed about 5 hours of screen operation).

On average, I charge the HTC Butterfly S every 1.5 - 2 days, while I charged the HTC One almost every day.

In mode with 3G enabled, the "butterfly" shows up to 6 hours screen time(twice as long as my iPhone 5 showed in our Moscow networks with 3g enabled).

Performance (games, lag tests)

In everyday use (without games), the device does not heat up. In games, the heating is felt, but not as much as on the SGS4.

With performance in most games (MC4, Wild Blood) no problem at all. Everything is playable and comes with maximum graphics. In Real Racing 3, fps can sometimes drop, as with all smartphones with a full HD screen. An exception may be devices based on Qualcomm 800.

The speed of the operating system itself is not satisfactory. Everything works quickly and smoothly. SGS4 with its touchwiz lags behind in these indicators. Separately, I note that the browser in Sense compares favorably with the stock one in touchvise, both in speed and in the ability to adjust text in real time depending on the zoom. With custom firmware, Butterfly S runs like a Nexus 4 and even launches programs faster.
