Xiaomi Mi6 review. New flagship killer? The most powerful smartphones from China that you haven’t heard of or “flagship killers” Chinese smartphones with flagship cameras

The first half of 2016 has come to an end, and, therefore, the time has come to draw conclusions about which smartphones from the Middle Kingdom rightfully bear the title of the best. We bring to your attention a list of the 10 most interesting Chinese devices released over the past period of this year. Attention is drawn not only to flagships, but also to devices belonging to the budget niche. We will also talk about the best representatives of the ultra-budget segment.

Zuk Z2

Despite the size of this smartphone, it can confidently be called a real “monster” if you focus on its technical parameters. The Z2 is positioned as a compact alternative Xiaomi smartphone Mi5, because it has an absolutely identical hardware platform. The Snapdragon 820 Quad-Core chipset is responsible for the performance of the gadget; 4 GB of RAM are allocated. The drive has a size of 64 GB.

In China, this powerful device can be purchased for $310, which is very pleasing. The screen has a diagonal of 5 inches, and the resolution is limited to 1920 × 1080 pixels, so the pixel density here is higher than that of devices with similar parameters. Software part The device is based on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. Autonomy is provided by a battery with a resource of 3500 mAh. A port built into the case is used to connect to a PC and charge. USB Type-C. Unlike new products from LeEco, there is a 3.5 mm audio output. For its relatively low price, this smartphone offers almost everything a modern user needs, which is why it entered the top 10.

X5 Max

Another ultra-budget product has a place on our list. The X5 Max model from Doogee is a “charged” modification of the mega-popular X5 smartphone, which was released last year. The manufacturer did not skimp on providing the new product with a cool 4000 mAh battery, which, together with the low-resolution screen and the not very powerful MT6580 hardware platform from MediaTek, gives excellent battery life. By the way, the display has not changed, the same IPS matrix by 5 inches with a resolution of 1280 × 720 pixels.

The device is very cheap, but this fact did not prevent it from acquiring a fingerprint scanner. However, you should not count on instant operation of this sensor due to the price of the product. Another plus is the presence of Android 6.0 on board, which is rarely seen in devices under $70, which is how much the Doogee X5 Max costs. But the disadvantages include the small amount of RAM and ROM. The flash drive is 8 GB in size, while only 1 GB is allocated for RAM memory, but this is the norm for an ultra-budget device.

You can buy Doogee X5 Max for only $64.99.

This device has perhaps become the most anticipated Chinese flagship. The smartphone flaunts remarkable appearance and a display with 3D Press technology, but received a fly in the ointment in the form of a 2560 mAh battery. Although this is an unfortunate oversight by the manufacturer and spoils the impression, this smartphone is still worth purchasing.

Hidden inside the case is a powerful 10-core Helio X25 chip, 4 GB of RAM and 32 or 64 GB flash drive. The display here is 5.2-inch 1920 × 1080 pixels, made using SuperAMOLED technology. The main camera received a unique backlight of ten LEDs. Software device - Android 6.0. For $385 you can buy the younger flagship model and the older one for $430.

All models of this top Meizu flagship are available at prices ranging from $389.99 to $479.99.

Blade A1

Another interesting smartphone from the Middle Kingdom this year was released by ZTE. The Blade A1 model in terms of price is located between ultra-budget and budget segments, since it is valued at approximately $100. The smartphone is similar in parameters to the popular Meizu M2 mini, but also has an additional fingerprint scanner on the back cover.

The device is equipped with a plastic body with bright colors, a colorful 5-inch IPS display with HD format and a loud multimedia speaker. The ZTE product operates based on the MT6735 chip at 1.3 GHz. There are 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of ROM, supported microSD cards up to 128 GB. There is a battery with a capacity of 2800 mAh. He works under Android control 5.1, Mifavor 3.2 shell installed. The smartphone, given the low price, turned out to be very attractive.

Buy ZTE Blade A1 is available for only $99.99.

The OnePlus brand, owned by the Chinese BBK Electronics and specializing in high-performance smartphones at a minimal price, has officially introduced a new product: OnePlus 5. The device received a design that is indistinguishable from the iPhone 7 Plus, and a dual camera almost identical to that of an Apple smartphone.

“Affordable premium” on the smartphone market in mid-2017, according to OnePlus, looks like this: an aluminum body in black or dark gray, a FullHD “Optic AMOLED” screen with a diagonal of 5.5 inches, a top-end system-on-a-chip Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 ( 8 cores, 2.45 GHz, Adreno 540 graphics), 6 or 8 GB of RAM and 64 or 128 GB of built-in storage with a high-speed UFS 2.1 interface.

OnePlus 5 comes with a dual camera setup that uses the same imaging approach as the or. It consists of a combination of regular and “telephoto” lenses, as well as two sensors: in the case of OnePlus 5, these are 16-megapixel (for a lens with an f/1.7 aperture) and 20-megapixel (for a “telephoto” with f/2.6) sensors . This configuration makes possible a full 2x optical zoom, as well as photography with the bokeh effect (background blur) characteristic of professional cameras.

The Chinese did not spare pixels (namely, small pixels that capture less light than the larger elements of the 12-megapixel matrices of the iPhone 7 or) for the front camera - it is 16-megapixel.

OnePlus 5 also has NFC support, Bluetooth 5.0 and all LTE (4G) frequencies used in the world. At the same time, the most modern standard for high-speed data transfer in mobile networks— Gigabit LTE, which is gradually being introduced by operators, is not supported by the smartphone. The battery capacity is also not very impressive - 3300 mAh. But the battery supports a proprietary standard fast charging Dash Charge (5 volts, 4 amps). OnePlus 5 runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat with the proprietary OxygenOS UI shell.

You can order the device on the official OnePlus website starting June 27. The price of the basic model (gray color, 6 GB RAM, 64 GB storage) will be $479 in the US or €499 in Europe. A more advanced model in black with 8 GB of RAM and a 128 GB storage was priced at $539 or 559 euros.

Let us remember that OnePlus is an international brand of BBK Electronics, which also owns the Oppo and Vivo brands, aimed at Android smartphone enthusiasts. At the end of 2016, these two companies together captured 31.6% of the Chinese market (IDC data), leaving behind Huawei (16.4%), Apple (9.6%) and Xiaomi (8.9%).

Chinese “flagship killer” for $350

For enthusiasts and those simply interested in the market mobile devices The story behind the OnePlus One smartphone should be well known. In a brief summary, it looks like this: the OnePlus company was founded in 2013 by former Oppo vice president Pete Lau, almost immediately after the start of its existence, various fragmentary data, teasers, banners, announcements of extravagant promotions and even slogans began to appear on the network, broadcasting how the philosophy of the new enterprise, as well as information about its upcoming products. In the spring, more detailed data appeared in news channels about the first OnePlus device, which was supposed to become not just a flagship, but a “flagship killer.” The intrigued public began to wait in anticipation for the appearance of a simultaneously powerful, unusual and inexpensive smartphone.

The birth of OnePlus's first child took place at the end of April, it became the OnePlus One smartphone. Considering that by that time the company itself was barely six months old, the development and release of the device simply proceeded at superluminal speed. In general, the public’s expectations were justified, the mobile computer really matches the capabilities and hardware of the flagship devices of 2014, and the price of the new product was 1.5 - 2 times lower than the cost of competitors.

With a slight delay, sales of OnePlus One started in May in several countries; Russia was not on their list. But where did ours go? Domestic sellers are ready to satisfy any demand, including for such rare “animals”. We also have one copy of OnePlus One at our disposal.

Key Features of OnePlus One

There are two modifications of OnePlus One: with 16 GB and with 64 GB of flash memory. There are also two color options for the smartphone case: white and dark gray.

Contents of delivery

The OnePlus One smartphone is packaged in an original box consisting of two parts: a white dust jacket and a red insert. Both components are made of durable cardboard. The packaging volume is small, there was only room for a smartphone, a sync cable, a booklet and an iSkrepka accessory. Branded Charger(5 V, 2 A) comes in a separate small box, made in the same red and white style.

The OnePlus One packaging designers were clearly inspired by the work of their colleagues at Apple, the box looks and its contents, located in clearly designated areas, are excellent. But the OnePlus One packaging contains zero information. There is not only an image of the smartphone, but also a listing of its characteristics. A few parameters: size, weight, supported ranges cellular communication, screen resolution and volume internal memory- are indicated on two stickers affixed to the back of the package.

Whether there is a proprietary headset for OnePlus One is unknown; at the time of writing the review, only replaceable back panels and protective film to the screen.

Appearance and usability

Probably, over time, following the increase in average human height, Homo sapiens’ hands will also increase in size. But until this happens, all smartphones with displays larger than 5 inches diagonally look like aliens from the future. It is difficult to understand whether it is a tablet, a smartphone, a media player, or just a rectangular communicator from some science fiction film.

The advantages of tablet phones are obvious: big screen allows you to see more details, making it easier for people with low vision to work with a smartphone. But such devices also have many disadvantages: they are not very comfortable to hold, it is simply not possible to operate them with one hand, a large screen consumes more energy, which is critical for a mobile device. As a result, together with tablet phones, we get the much-desired opportunity to choose and a reason for endless debate “about the tastes” of the diagonal displays of mobile devices, which, as we know, are not disputed.

The OnePlus One smartphone is a bright representative of the cohort of modern tablet phones. At first glance, any person who has not previously owned a large smartphone has several questions: “Is this a phone?” and “Why so huge?” And it’s big because the smartphone’s display is framed in an even larger case. The developers definitely didn’t fight for minimum thickness frames around the screen, and as a result we have 4 mm of plastic on the sides of the display, 14 mm at the top and 18 mm (!) at the bottom of the smartphone body. A total of 32 mm of frames with a total length of the device of 152 mm. This space, of course, is not empty, but it could simply be smaller, especially if the developers preferred to use virtual control buttons instead of touch ones on the front panel. As a result, the dimensions of the OnePlus One are truly impressive, and it seems that Chinese engineers, on the contrary, tried to make the OnePlus One as large as possible.

For such a size, the smartphone seems almost weightless, despite the fact that its weight is again higher than that of most competitors with similar hardware. This impression is partly created due to the small thickness of the case, partly due to the large surface area of the case - the specific weight of the smartphone per unit area is small. The OnePlus One fits like a glove in the palm of your hand, again thanks to the large size of the case and the non-slip plastic of the rear panel. Whether the hero of the review will fit in a trouser or shirt pocket depends on the size of these pockets themselves, but he will definitely be felt there.

Design is a subjective concept, but let’s try to evaluate the exterior of OnePlus One in general. The hero of this review is made of high-quality materials: metal, plastic and glass - as befits a modern flagship. According to the manufacturer, the internal frame is made of magnesium alloy mobile computer. The metal can be seen with your own eyes if you pay attention to the stiffening rib that runs along the perimeter of the smartphone body. They are attached to it protective glass display and plastic back panel. The white plastic of this panel is pleasant to the touch and does not attract fingerprints.

Designers tried to brighten up the rectangular canon of modern smartphones with arcs at the top and bottom ends and a convex rear panel, as a result, OnePlus One is a bit like a modernized version of Acer Liquid and Oppo Find 7.

The second “trick” of OnePlus designers is the protrusion of the protective glass of the display above the surface of the metal stiffener. It turned out a little unusual.

As a result, OnePlus One gets a solid B for design. The appearance of the hero of the review did not provide any exceptional impressions - neither positive nor negative. Everything is quite solid and standard, but the developers’ desire to give the exterior of OnePlus One several distinctive features is noticeable.

There are no complaints about the build quality of the smartphone. At least our copy was assembled to a very high quality. There are no creaks, crunches, backlashes or movements of the plastic panels. There are no significant gaps between parts, as well as irregularities.

In addition to the display and touch buttons, on the front panel of OnePlus One there is a telephone speaker, light and proximity sensors, and an information LED. The speaker is covered with a decorative cover installed flush with the display and does not collect dust and dirt from the screen.

Manufacturer's logo, as is often the case with Chinese smartphones, is only listed on the back of OnePlus One. Above it is a block of the main camera lens and LED flash. A little to the right you can see the hole for the camera microphone.

The main microphone, along with a dual speaker and a Micro-USB connector are located at the bottom of the OnePlus One.

At the top end there is a 3.5 mm headphone jack and a third microphone - apparently for recording stereo sound and/or suppressing noise during a telephone conversation.

On the right side of the smartphone there is a power control key, on the left there is a SIM card tray connector and volume control buttons. The location of all the plastic keys is logical; they are clearly under your fingers if you hold the smartphone in your hand. Their shape and power reserve make it easy to drive the OnePlus One blindly.

The design of the OnePlus One deserves an "excellent" rating. Together with a high rating for design, this allows us to rank OnePlus One, if not among the standards of “smartphone design,” then among its best examples. The only remaining design criticism is the overly wide bezels around the display. You can complain about the lack of a memory card slot and a non-removable battery, but that was the idea of the creators of OnePlus One.

Screen

The display parameters of the OnePlus One are impressive: 5.5″ diagonal, Full HD resolution, 400 ppi density. Any picture on such a screen looks great.

The smartphone screen is made using TOL technology, also known as OGS. The matrix, capacitive touch panel and Gorilla Glass 3 protective glass are glued into one “sandwich” without gaps or air gaps. Using such a screen is a pleasure, but the thought of the low maintainability of such a design constantly looms.

The OnePlus One capacitive sensor is capable of recognizing up to 8 touches - theoretically. In practice, it starts to malfunction and get confused after the 5th touch. Perhaps this is a defect in the firmware or specifically our device copy. Overall, you should check the touch sensor carefully when purchasing a OnePlus One.

The screen brightness changes depending on the ambient light level. It can also be controlled manually. Next to the light sensor is a proximity sensor. His work did not raise any complaints - the screen turned off and turned on again without any delays.

Detailed examination using measuring instruments conducted by the editor of the “Monitors” and “Projectors and TV” sections Alexey Kudryavtsev. Here is his expert opinion on the screen of the sample under study.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface that is scratch-resistant. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are no worse than those of the Google Nexus 7 (2013) screen (hereinafter simply Nexus 7). For clarity, here is a photo in which a white surface is reflected when the screens are turned off (Nexus 7 on the left, OnePlus One on the right, then they can be distinguished by size):

The screen of the OnePlus One is just as dark - the brightness in the photographs is about 100, just like the Nexus 7. The ghosting of reflected objects in the OnePlus One screen is very weak, this indicates that between the layers of the screen (more specifically, between the outer glass and the surface of the LCD matrix) no air gap (OGS type screen - One Glass Solution). Due to the smaller number of boundaries (glass/air type) with very different refractive indices, such screens look better in conditions of strong external illumination, but their repair in the case of cracked external glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be replaced. The outer surface of the screen has a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (effective, even slightly better than that of the Nexus 7), so fingerprints are removed more easily and appear at a slower rate than with regular glass.

When manually controlling the brightness and displaying the white field in full screen, the maximum brightness value was about 465 cd/m², the minimum was 5 cd/m². The maximum brightness is high, which means, given the excellent anti-glare properties, readability even on a sunny day outdoors should be at a good level. In complete darkness, the brightness can be reduced to a comfortable value. There is automatic brightness adjustment based on the light sensor (it is located to the left of the front speaker grille). IN automatic mode When external lighting conditions change, the screen brightness both increases and decreases (but slowly). In complete darkness in automatic mode, the brightness is reduced to 50 cd/m² (acceptable), in an artificially lit office (about 400 lux) the brightness is set to 160 cd/m² (normal), in a brightly lit environment (corresponding to lighting on a clear day outdoors , but without direct sunlight - 20,000 lux or a little more) - rises to 465 cd/m², that is, to the maximum. It turns out that the automatic brightness adjustment function works correctly. At any brightness level, there is virtually no backlight modulation, so there is no screen flickering.

IN this smartphone An IPS type matrix is used. The microphotographs show a typical IPS subpixel structure:

For comparison, you can see the gallery of microphotographs of screens used in mobile technology.

The screen has good viewing angles without significant color shift even with large viewing deviations from perpendicular to the screen and without inverting shades. For comparison, here are photographs in which the same images are displayed on the screens of OnePlus One and Nexus 7, while the screen brightness is initially set to approximately 200 cd/m², and the color balance on the camera is forcibly switched to 6500 K. There is a white field perpendicular to the screens:

Note the good uniformity of brightness and color tone of the white field. And a test picture:

Color reproduction is good and colors are rich on both screens. Now at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen:

It can be seen that the colors have not changed much on both screens, but on the OnePlus One the contrast has decreased to a greater extent due to the strong bleaching of blacks. And a white field:

The brightness of the screens at an angle decreased (by at least 5 times, based on the difference in shutter speed), but in the case of OnePlus One the decrease in brightness is less. When deviated diagonally, the black field brightens greatly and acquires a purple tint or remains almost neutral gray. The photographs below demonstrate this (the brightness of the white areas in perpendicular to the plane screens direction is the same!):

And from another angle:

When viewed perpendicularly, the uniformity of the black field is good:

The contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is not the highest - about 730:1. The response time for the black-white-black transition is 17 ms (10 ms on + 7 ms off). The transition between halftones of gray 25% and 75% (based on the numerical value of the color) and back takes a total of 26 ms. The gamma curve, constructed using 32 points with equal intervals based on the numerical value of the shade of gray, did not reveal any blockage in either the highlights or the shadows. The fit exponent is 2.12, slightly below the standard value of 2.2. In this case, the real gamma curve slightly deviates from the power-law dependence:

Color gamut is sRGB:

The spectra show that the matrix filters moderately mix the components with each other:

As a result, visually the colors have a natural saturation. The balance of shades on the gray scale is acceptable, since the color temperature is slightly higher than the standard 6500 K, and the deviation from the blackbody spectrum (ΔE) in most of the gray scale is less than or slightly more than 10, which is considered a good indicator for a consumer device. At the same time, color temperature and ΔE change little from hue to hue - this has a positive effect on the visual assessment of color balance. (The darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since color balance there is not very important, and the error in measuring color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

In the OnePlus One screen settings, there is a window with a choice of one of two preset profiles and a custom one, in which you can tweak some image settings:

There is no particular benefit to this, but it can be useful. For example, when selecting a profile Bright saturation (color contrast) increases slightly, which is shown in the photo below (you need to compare with the same one above):

Let's summarize. The screen has a high maximum brightness and has good anti-glare properties, so the device can be used outdoors without any problems, even on a sunny summer day. In complete darkness, the brightness can be reduced to a comfortable level. It is also possible to use a mode with automatic brightness adjustment, which works adequately. Also, the advantages of the screen include an effective oleophobic coating, absence of flicker and air gap in the layers of the screen, good uniformity of the black field, equal to sRGB color gamut and good color balance. The disadvantages are the low stability of black to the deviation of the gaze from perpendicular to the screen plane. Nevertheless, taking into account the importance of characteristics for this particular class of devices, the quality of the screen can be considered high.

Sound

The OnePlus One has a record number of microphones and speakers. There are three of both of them on the phone body. The sound subsystem also includes a headphone output and volume keys.

The phone speaker pleases with the sound quality; the volume is also high, but not prohibitive. For most conditions it will be sufficient, except that in very noisy places the interlocutor will not be heard well enough. Three microphones suppress external noise and isolate the voice of the smartphone owner during a conversation. The OnePlus One developers claim that using a third microphone increases speech clarity by 80%. Whether this is true or not is quite difficult to verify, but the interlocutors did not note any failures in voice transmission during telephone conversations.

Two stereo speakers, located on the bottom end of the smartphone, are responsible for the sound output in OnePlus One. There are also no complaints about their quality: even when playing tracks with an abundance of low frequencies There are no creaks or metallic grinding sounds coming from them. The volume of the speakers is good, fortunately there are two of them. Muting any of the speakers is quite simple, you just need to block its output, but mute two speakers at the same time in real life already problematic.

The OnePlus One's headphone output is very powerful. It’s simply impossible to listen to anything at maximum volume—it’s scary for your hearing. But even with the volume turned up, there is no distortion or interference in the sound. It’s a shame that OnePlus One doesn’t come with branded headphones; flagship owners will have to buy third-party ones, and there’s no point in skimping on their quality.

Unfortunately, in flagship smartphone OnePlus does not have an FM radio receiver. There is no audio player in it, besides Google Play Music.

The most convenient way to control the volume of the OnePlus One audio subsystem is using special keys on the left side of the smartphone body. WITH detailed settings amplification of various frequencies can be played in a special equalizer application. It offers the owner a lot of sets of prepared settings and the ability to set different degrees of reverb.

Camera

The OnePlus One smartphone is equipped with two cameras: the main one on the back panel and the additional one on the front. Information about the main camera is plentiful: a Sony Exmor IMX 214 sensor with a resolution of 13 megapixels, optics from 6 lenses with a maximum aperture of f / 2.0, an autofocus system. Two LEDs serve as backlight. There is less information about the additional camera: we only know that its matrix resolution is 5 megapixels and it does not have a focusing system.

The most convenient way to turn on the OnePlus One camera is to use a special gesture on the screen: to launch the shooting control program, just draw a circle with your finger. There is no separate key to control the camera, but you can use existing buttons if you wish. In this case, the volume control keys will be responsible for the digital zoom, and the power control keys will be responsible for the “shutter release”.

The application interface for photo and video shooting in OnePlus One is laconic. By right side There are icons for starting photo and video recording, as well as panorama shooting. They can be moved to the left if the smartphone owner is left-handed. At the bottom of the screen there are icons for the settings menu, flash control, camera switching and quick access to basic settings. Shooting modes (Auto, HDR, night photography, motion, black and white photography, etc.) are switched using vertical or horizontal swipes on the screen, depending on the orientation of the display. The settings menu is quite detailed and convenient: all items are large and contrasting.

The camera and control program start quickly. The autofocus system also works quickly and takes a picture. You can specify the focus area yourself by tapping the corresponding point on the screen - or you can rely on the camera's automatic perspective tracking.

The maximum image resolution of OnePlus One is 4208x3120 pixels. Video shooting is carried out with 4K resolution. There are several video and audio codecs to choose from: MPEG-4, H.263, H.264 and AAC, AMR-NB. You can take photos while recording video.

Own 5 MP front-camera She does a good job, and she can cope with her direct responsibilities quite well.

The sharpness is quite good, but the noise reduction spoils the details.

Plan sharpness is good, and noise in dark shadows is almost unnoticeable.

Towards the left edge the sharpness drops a little.

The camera has a good dynamic range, but not very pleasant color rendition, although this is a matter of taste.

There is noticeable noise on the water.

Good sharpness across the field and plans.

In low light, the noise reduction greatly blurs the image, and movement is noticeable already at shutter speeds of 1/33 seconds.

The license plates of nearby cars are clearly visible.

The camera does macro photography well.

Lighting ≈3200 lux. The camera does a good job.

Lighting ≈1400 lux. The situation remains virtually unchanged.

Lighting ≈130 lux. Strong noises become noticeable.

Lighting ≈130 lux, flash. The flash noticeably improves the situation, but the noise does not disappear.

Lighting<1 люкс, вспышка. В темноте вспышка по-прежнему работает хорошо. Без нее камера не справляется.

The camera turned out to be quite good, but it’s not quite up to par with the flagship one. The stand shows that the camera is very similar to the Oppo Find 7 camera, however, as we already know, numbers do not always reflect the true state of things, and this is clearly visible from the pictures. First of all, quite strong noise catches your eye, especially in the shadows at the edge of the frame, which the noise reduction process is very questionable. His somewhat more precise and accurate work could well raise the camera to a higher level. But, unfortunately, there is a flaw. However, in this case it is possible to fix it programmatically.

In general, noise and its processing are the main problems of the camera, which do not allow us to call it a flagship. The sharpness is quite decent, although not good everywhere. The camera will handle most scenes well.

An example of Full HD video is shown below.

The camera does video shooting well. Despite the slight ripples and shaking of the picture, still images are quite clear.

Telephone and communications

It wouldn't be much of an exaggeration to say that OnePlus One has one of the widest ranges of wireless connectivity modules. Almost everything that is in the list of modern data exchange standards is also in the list of characteristics of the review hero. There is perhaps no infrared transmitter. So, in order.

Classic 2G cellular communications operate at frequencies of 850/900/1800/1900 MHz. GPRS/EDGE data exchange technologies are supported. There is only one cellular module, as well as a slot for SIM cards, in OnePlus One. To install and remove a Micro-SIM card in a Chinese flagship, a paper clip is required.

The 3G connection in OnePlus One is presented in two versions: Chinese TD-SCDMA and WCDMA, which is more common in the world and in Russia. The company's website indicates support for the following 3G frequency bands: 1, 2, 4, 5, 8. This corresponds to frequencies as follows: 2100/1900/1700/850/900 MHz. In the text of the label on the smartphone box, the same frequencies are indicated, with the exception of the 1700 MHz band. Be that as it may, the smartphone caught a 3G signal both in Moscow and in the Moscow region (where it was available and 4G was not available), so the UMTS 2100/900 MHz bands in OnePlus One are definitely working.

Finally, the fastest type of connection - 4G - is also presented in OnePlus One in several options: Chinese TD-LTE (LTE-TDD) and LTE-FDD. The smartphone manufacturer's website lists the following frequency bands for this communication module: 1, 3, 4, 7, 17, 38, 40. Domestic mobile operators use bands 7 and 38 depending on the region. We managed to catch a 4G signal both in Moscow and in the Moscow region. In both cases, the speed of data exchange did not disappoint.

The smartphone confidently found the cellular network and tried to hold on to it until the last moment, maintaining the fastest connection possible. Sometimes, however, this caused inconvenience: connecting to a fast network with a weak signal turned into inaccessibility of the phone and missed calls, and once the smartphone, with a minimum signal level, “fell into depression” and rebooted out of annoyance. So, if there is no need for LTE and 3G, it is better to switch to the older, but more common GSM.

The Wi-Fi module in OnePlus One is capable of operating in two frequency bands (2.4 and 5 GHz), and supports several communication standards: IEEE 802.11b/g/n/ac. At home, with a TP-Link TL-WPA4220 router as an access point, the review hero demonstrated a connection speed of 45 Mbit/s.

The presence of a Bluetooth 4.0 module in OnePlus One made it possible to connect the Sony MW1 wireless stereo headset to it. Once the connection is established, the following options become available from the headset: listening to music with the transfer of track names, making phone calls with the transfer of only phone numbers without names from the smartphone’s contact list. The data exchange rate via the Bluetooth module with the MacBook Pro Mid 2009 computer was 1.6 Mbit/s. OnePlus One also supports working as a Bluetooth modem.

The sixth wireless module in OnePlus One still has exotic status. We are talking about NFC. Despite its rather long history, this standard is still only gaining the attention of the public and a place in the sun, while manufacturers of mobile equipment continue to come up with ways to use it. The OnePlus One developers offer several of these: bank card emulation, contactless payments, standard data exchange between two devices and classic tag recognition. The user will have to configure the operation of the smartphone in these modes independently, since there are no tags or the necessary software in the standard OnePlus One firmware. There is only the option to turn on the NFC module, allow data transfer and launch the application for payment via NFC, which does not work - apparently, it requires a special SIM card.

The longest-range communication module in OnePlus One is the GPS/GLONASS satellite navigation system receiver. There were no problems with its operation; the location of the smartphone was determined quickly and reliably. OnePlus One also has a built-in magnetic compass.

When connected via a USB cable, the review hero can appear to the system as a USB drive, MTP device and USB modem. In addition, OnePlus One supports USB Host (OTG), which means you can connect various USB devices, including drives, to your smartphone via an adapter.

OS and software

The OnePlus One developers acted in an unusual way: instead of, like most colleagues, taking the standard version of Android and modifying it in some way (adding their own shell, themes, applications), they used a ready-made solution from a team of independent developers in the form of CyanogenMod firmware.

CyanogenMod is one of the most popular independent firmware for Android smartphones among enthusiasts. Since it is often based on the source codes of the latest version of the Google OS, it is installed by smartphone users who want to take a look at the new version of the operating system and try out its features as soon as possible. It is also popular with owners of mobile devices for which manufacturers have stopped updating firmware. CyanogenMod remains in this case the last opportunity to run a more recent version of the OS on your outdated device. But everything has its drawbacks, and for CyanogenMod they are weak support for specific hardware (for example, a camera or an FM receiver) and, as a result, problems or inability to use it after flashing.

But all this is not about OnePlus One. Since CyanogenMod was used by the smartphone developers themselves, the firmware turned out to be not only more or less stable, but also provided support for all the hardware of the mobile computer (although the absence of an FM radio in the OnePlus One involuntarily raises suspicions that this is not all).

Be that as it may, the appearance of the firmware and the speed of its operation evoke positive emotions. The CyanogenMod firmware contains everything that is in Android KitKat 4.4.2 on which it is based, and even a little more. Compared to the usual "green robot", the "blue" version of it places an emphasis on customizing and modifying everything. You can set actions for short and long presses on touch buttons in options for the lock screen and normal operation mode. You can disable touch buttons altogether. You can customize the location and set of icons for the lock screen, the location of widgets and applications. You can customize the system status bar, quick settings panel, and notification panel. The ability to install your own themes has not gone away.

At the same time, there are no third-party applications, as such, in the OnePlus One firmware at all. Thanks to the developers for saving scarce flash memory.

It is necessary to mention one simultaneously very convenient and very inconvenient feature in the OnePlus One firmware. The smartphone can be unlocked with various gestures on the touch screen: for example, by drawing a circle, you can launch the camera, and by sliding two fingers, you can launch the audio player. Really convenient, but only until the smartphone ends up in your trouser pocket. Sooner or later, music will start playing from it, and the memory of the mobile computer may contain several pictures of the inside of the pocket. The firmware developers are aware of the problem and promise to solve it in a short time (information from the proximity sensor will be additionally read).

In conclusion, there are a few points to note. Despite the openness of the firmware and its source code, OnePlus One does not initially have root access, but it can be activated relatively easily. If for some reason you don’t like CyanogenMod or want to experiment, then there is a semi-official firmware with ColorOS created for Oppo smartphones - OnePlus One is supplied with it to the domestic Chinese market. However, you need to take into account several features of this system: it uses Android 4.3 as a basis, only English and Chinese translations of the interface are available.

Performance

The OnePlus One smartphone is another representative of the cohort of flagship mobile devices, whose heart is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 platform (MSM8974AC) - perhaps the most powerful SoC at the moment. Let us recall that it includes four Krait 400 computing cores, the operating frequency of which can reach 2.5 GHz, and the Adreno 330 graphics processor, the operating frequency of which is 578 MHz. The amount of RAM in the OnePlus One is impressive - 3 GB (perhaps this is the practical limit for 32-bit mobile processors), the access speed is 15 GB / s. Support for eMMC 5.0 flash memory in the Snapdragon 801 allows you to theoretically work with the internal storage of a smartphone at speeds of up to 400 MB/s.

In numbers, all the characteristics of the OnePlus One hardware look impressive. The smartphone is really fast in everyday tasks, but now this won’t surprise anyone. Perhaps the two places where you can still notice the benefits of the OnePlus One's powerful hardware are benchmarks and games. Let's see how the hero of the review performed in regular and gaming tests.

Testing in MobileXPRT, as well as in the latest versions of AnTuTu 4.x and GeekBench 3:

In the table for comparing the results of synthetic tests, the hero of the review took his rightful place. In Mobile XPRT 2013 and GeekBench 3, the Chinese flagship was ahead HTC One M8 and Samsung Galaxy S5, and in AnTuTu 4 it performed on equal terms with the Taiwanese smartphone.

The 3DMark graphics test gave specific scores only at the “steepest” settings; with low and medium settings, the Adreno 330’s performance went through the roof. In this gaming test, the review hero lost to the HTC One M8.

Results of testing the graphics subsystem in the Epic Citadel gaming test, as well as Basemark X and Bonsai Benchmark:

In the Epic Citadel gaming test, all smartphones with Adreno 330 showed the same results; the capabilities of the benchmark are now simply not enough to highlight specific devices. In it, the OnePlus One smartphone even outperformed the flagships of Samsung and HTC in 2014. Bonsai and Basemark X tests again showed the OnePlus One's advantage over the HTC One M8 and Samsung Galaxy S5. In conclusion, it remains to look at the performance in JavaScript browser tests.

Video playback

Let's see how OnePlus One handles video decoding.

Format Container, video, sound MX Video Player Standard video player
DVDRip AVI, XviD 720×400 2200 Kbps, MP3+AC3 plays normally plays normally
Web-DL SD AVI, XviD 720×400 1400 Kbps, MP3+AC3 plays normally plays normally

And he copes with this perfectly. Further testing was performed by Alexey Kudryavtsev.

We did not find the MHL interface, like Mobility DisplayPort, in this smartphone, so we had to limit ourselves to testing the output of video files on the screen of the device itself. To do this, we used a set of test files with an arrow and a rectangle moving one division per frame (see “Methodology for testing video playback and display devices. Version 1 (for mobile devices) 720/24p

Fine No

Note: If in both columns Uniformity And Passes Green ratings are given, this means that, most likely, when watching films, artifacts caused by uneven alternation and frame skipping will either not be visible at all, or their number and visibility will not affect the viewing comfort. Red marks indicate possible problems with playback of the corresponding files.

According to the criterion of frame output, the quality of playback of video files on the screen of the smartphone itself is good, since frames (or groups of frames) can (but are not required) be output with more or less uniform alternation of intervals and without skipping frames. The smartphone can even display files with a resolution of 4K up to 30 fps inclusive. When playing video files with a resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels (1080p), the image of the video file itself is displayed one-on-one, exactly along the edge of the screen and in true Full HD resolution. The brightness range displayed on the screen corresponds to the standard range of 16-235 - in the shadows, only a couple of shades are indistinguishable in brightness from black, and in the highlights, all gradations of shades are displayed.

Battery life

The OnePlus One has significant power draws in the form of a powerful computing platform and a large display. They are powered by a rechargeable battery with a decent capacity for today - 3100 mAh.

Since the case of the Chinese flagship is non-separable, it will not be possible to replace the battery on the fly, and to extend the operation of the smartphone, you will have to use external autonomous power sources. The lack of memory card support and the non-replaceable battery are the two most obvious shortcomings of the OnePlus One.

Let's see how the review hero's battery copes with its task.

Battery capacity Reading mode Video mode 3D Game Mode
OnePlus One 3100 mAh 14:00 9:30 a.m. 2 hours 45 minutes
Gionee Elife E7 2500 mAh 16:00 12:30 pm 2 hours 30 minutes
HTC One M8 2600 mAh 22:10 13:20 3 hours 20 minutes
Samsung Galaxy S5 2800 mAh 17:20 12:30 pm 4 hours 30 minutes
TCL Idol X+ 2500 mAh 12:30 pm 7:20 am 3:00 am
Lenovo Vibe Z 3050 mAh 11:45 am 8:00 am 3 hours 30 minutes
Acer Liquid S2 3300 mAh 16:40 7:40 a.m. 6:00 am

Our standard tests have shown that despite the stated high battery capacity, OnePlus One operates on a single charge significantly less than smartphones of similar class and hardware. The difference between OnePlus One and HTC One M8, the two most similar smartphones in comparison, is especially impressive. The significant discrepancy in tests can be explained if we assume that the developers are not entirely honest about the battery capacity of the smartphone, or if we blame it on the not fully optimized firmware of the mobile computer.

As a result, we can state that autonomy is not one of the advantages of OnePlus One, and the owner of this smartphone will have to charge it more often compared to owners of other flagship devices. I would like to complete this section with a few more numbers: when listening to music with the screen turned off, OnePlus One can work for 54 hours, and with normal use (calls, the Internet, simple games and a few photos), the battery charge lasts for about one day of operation.

conclusions

The results can be summarized as follows. The OnePlus One smartphone was overall a success; the weak points of the new product include short battery life, a non-replaceable battery, and the lack of a slot for memory cards. To the same list you can add the still crude firmware and problems with the operation of the capacitive sensor. The lack of an FM receiver will not be a disadvantage for many potential buyers.

OnePlus has indeed managed to launch a flagship smartphone in the market at a very attractive price. For less money, at least on the Russian market, you can only buy Xiaomi Mi3; all other smartphones with Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 and 5″ displays will be significantly more expensive, including the Oppo Find 7, which is extremely similar to the hero of the review.

Not long ago we got acquainted with one of the best smartphones in terms of price and capabilities in the budget segment - Jiayu G4S. Now we have, perhaps, identified the best mobile computer in the middle and upper price segments of the market - OnePlus One.

Chinese flagship killers are smartphones manufactured by Chinese companies that are in the highest flagship league, but most often are much cheaper than their much more famous competitors. It used to sound ridiculous, but today Chinese companies have been able to take over a huge part of the smartphone market, and even their flagships are often a huge success not only at home, but throughout the world. Today we will talk about such smartphones.

OnePlus OnePlus 3T 64Gb

We'll start with one of the most famous Chinese flagships - OnePlus OnePlus 3T. This is a slightly updated version of the third generation smartphone, the main difference of which is the more powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor (previously Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 was used).

OnePlus OnePlus 3T is one of the most balanced flagships. He, according to many experts, is good in literally all disciplines, be it watching movies, games, photography, etc.

The screen diagonal is 5.5 inches, the resolution is Full HD, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor works together with 6 GB of RAM. This powerful bundle, by the way, will last for several years to come. The rear camera has a resolution of 16 MP, but it shoots at the level of more eminent competitors.

There are all kinds of interfaces here, although there is no slot for a memory card. Whether this is a plus or a minus is up to the buyer to decide.

Xiaomi Mi6 64Gb

The flagship devices from Xiaomi are distinguished by their “tasty” cost, which, of course, is extremely beneficial for sales. In 2017, the company introduced its new flagship - Xiaomi Mi6. This smartphone can already be bought on the Russian market.

Like the previous generation model, Mi6 received a display of the same diagonal, namely 5.15 inches. The resolution has also not changed - Full HD, although the display itself has become even better. The main feature of the novelty is, perhaps, the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, one of the most powerful on the market. The amount of RAM is an impressive 6 GB.

As for the body, now he “tried on” glass - glass in front and behind, the frame is made of metal. On the back of the case you can see a dual camera. A version with a ceramic body has also appeared, but it costs a little more.

Meizu Pro 6s

Of course, you can’t ignore Meizu, Xiaomi’s main competitor.

Meizu is represented in our review by the Pro 6s model. This is a 5.2-inch smartphone with a Full HD display resolution, which is powered by a MediaTek Helio X25 (MT6797T) processor. The amount of RAM is 4 GB. Probably, in the next generation of the device the amount of RAM will increase to 6 GB. The built-in memory is 64 GB, there is no slot for a memory card. The case itself is metal and thin - only 7.3 mm.

Traditionally for Meizu, the emphasis is on sound and here it is really good - both in headphones and from speakers. Of course, when buying it, it is better to listen to it, but you should not be disappointed.

Huawei Mate 9 Pro 128Gb

Some may ask: what is Huawei doing here? Don't you know that this is also a Chinese company? True, unlike most relatively recently formed companies, Huawei was founded back in 1987, and today is one of the world leaders in the production of smartphones.

In our review, we will talk about Huawei Mate 9 Pro, a new product that has several interesting features.

The first feature that immediately catches your eye is the curved screen. Judging by the demand for Samsung smartphones that use the same display, users liked the idea.

The second is the presence of a dual camera module, which is clearly visible on the back of the case.

Third is power. Huawei Mate 9 Pro is powered by a HiSilicon Kirin 960 processor and 6 GB of RAM. By the way, the battery capacity is large - as much as 4000 mAh.

Xiaomi Mi5S Plus 64Gb

Another Xiaomi in our review. Yes, this is a model of the previous generation, but that won’t make it any worse. In addition, this modification offers a large 5.7-inch display with Full HD resolution.

Of course, the Mi5S Plus is not as powerful as the Mi6: it uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor and 4GB of RAM. The built-in memory is 64 GB, there is no slot for a memory card.

Interestingly, there is a dual camera module installed here, although the Mi5 model has a single one. The body is made of metal. Of course, there are all the necessary communications.

LeEco Le Max 2 64Gb

This is no longer the newest smartphone, but even by current standards it is very powerful, and it is also the company’s flagship device.

This is a relatively large smartphone, because the screen diagonal is 5.7 inches, the display resolution is very high - 2560x1440 pixels. The case is metal.

The device is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, RAM capacity is 6 GB, internal memory is 64 GB, memory cards are not supported.

There are options such as USB Type-C, fast charging function, fingerprint scanner, etc. At the same time, the price of a smartphone is relatively low - when compared with eminent competitors.

ZTE Axon 7

ZTE is one of the largest manufacturers of telecommunications equipment and mobile devices in China. The company is quite well-known in Russia, we have a wide range of smartphones.

ZTE Axon 7 is a 5.5-inch smartphone with QHD resolution in a metal body. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of built-in memory, while memory cards are supported.

What might interest ZTE Axon 7? For example, excellent build quality, a rich package bundle, a very good camera, as well as sound - it is good both from headphones and speakers (there are two stereo speakers).

Technologies

Today, the top ten largest smartphone manufacturers include 7 Chinese companies, including Xiaomi, OnePlus and Huawei.

Smartphones from China are constantly improving, and the price/quality ratio forces other competitors to come up with something new and original so as not to lose customers.

Chinese devices today are incredibly popular not only in China, but also in India, Europe and even the USA.

You can find many good models on the market, and every year such companies as Xiaomi, OnePlus, Huawei, ZTE, Lenovo And Meizu release more and more interesting and attractive smartphones.
