Mobile phone Blackberry Q10: review, specifications, reviews. Blackberry Q10. Modern hello from the past Blackberry q10 smartphone

The first QWERTY smartphone running BlackBerry 10

On January 30, BlackBerry simultaneously with the BlackBerry Z10 keyboardless touch smartphone presented a device in a more familiar BlackBerry form factor - a QWERTY monoblock. The smartphone was called Q10.

However, despite the fact that its announcement took place simultaneously with the BlackBerry Z10, the BlackBerry Q10 went on sale much later: the first devices appeared in the West only at the end of April. In Russia, the launch of the BlackBerry 10 operating system has not yet taken place, however, both smartphones are already available in gray retail (and a third smartphone has recently joined them - BlackBerry Q5, a budget analogue of BlackBerry Q10). However, judging by the fact that the smartphone was given to us for testing at the BlackBerry office, the official Russian launch is still not far off.

Let's take a look at the specs of all three existing BlackBerry 10 smartphones.

The table clearly shows that the main trump card of our today's hero is the Super AMOLED screen, as well as (in one of the modifications) support for Russian-standard LTE networks. As for the SoC and the amount of memory, everything is identical to the BlackBerry Z10. The difference between the younger model BlackBerry Q5 and BlackBerry Q10 is more weak stuffing(although here 2 GB random access memory!), lower camera resolution, IPS screen instead of Super AMOLED. And, of course, the design: it is much less attractive than the BlackBerry Q10.

Thus, the BlackBerry Q10 claims to be the flagship model range BlackBerry.

Well, now it's time to get to know the smartphone better.

Design

A test sample came to us for review with the inscription not for sale, without any packaging. Judging by the information available on the Web, the bundle of commercial devices includes a charger, a Micro-USB cable, user manuals and a stereo headset. In general, only the necessary minimum - like the BlackBerry Z10.

Externally, the smartphone resembles primarily the BlackBerry Bold 9900, the classic BlackBerry model that ended the RIM era. The Bold 9900 was the last flagship released by the company (before the rebranding) before active development of BlackBerry 10 began.

BlackBerry Bold 9900 is considered by many fans of the "blackberry" company best model BlackBerry in terms of design. It has an exceptionally comfortable keyboard and a serious appearance. Below is a photo of this device.

The BlackBerry Q10 inherited most of the design features of the BlackBerry Bold 9900, but it also has a number of differences.

Firstly, the BlackBerry Q10 has a significantly larger screen, which is now not rectangular (and the BlackBerry Bold 9900 had a horizontal rectangle), but a square one. Accordingly, more letters, messages and other information can now be displayed on one screen than the BlackBerry Bold 9900.

Secondly, the BlackBerry Q10 lacks a row of function keys above the QWERTY keyboard. Partly due to this, it was possible to free up additional space for the screen. Without call buttons, reset, and also without a joystick, it is uncomfortable at first, but you gradually get used to it and begin to enjoy communicating with the new OS.

Thirdly, the rows of keys are now straight, not curved (in the BlackBerry Bold 9900, the keys at the edges of the device were closer to the screen than the keys in the center, and in the BlackBerry Q10 all keys of the same row are at an equal distance from the screen). This also helped to save space, but did not cause a deterioration in ergonomics and ease of printing (and such concerns were when looking at the photos of the BlackBerry Q10).

In general, it should be noted that the BlackBerry Q10 can rightfully inherit the title of smartphone with the most comfortable QWERTY keyboard after the BlackBerry Bold 9900. The keys are large enough to hit even the owners of not the thinnest fingers, but at the same time the keyboard is not too big, so you can even type with one hand. The key travel is exceptionally pleasant - moderately soft, moderately elastic, moderately high. The English layout is completely identical to the BlackBerry Bold 9900, the Russian layout is slightly different, but you get used to it pretty quickly.

The back surface of the smartphone has a soft-touch coating. The pattern seen in the photographs can be misleading, creating the illusion that the surface is corrugated. In fact, it is completely smooth.

Like the BlackBerry Z10, the BlackBerry Q10 has a removable back cover. Moreover, unlike the BlackBerry Bold 9900, you don't need to pry it with your fingernail, just move it down a little, resting your fingers on the bottom edge. Under the cover is the battery, as well as card slots microSD memory and SIM cards in Micro-SIM format.

On the sides of the smartphone - a metal edging. The same decision was made in the BlackBerry Bold 9900, but even in the black version, the edging was unpainted, natural metallic color. And the BlackBerry Q10 has a completely black border (which, by the way, contrasts with the hardware buttons).

There are only four hardware buttons on the smartphone: on the right side there are volume buttons and between them there is an auxiliary button that can be configured for different actions. On the top edge in the center, like the BlackBerry Bold 9900, is the Power button. However, now you don't have to press it as often as before: in BlackBerry 10, to unlock, you just swipe your finger across the screen from the bottom up.

Also on the top edge is a 3.5 mm headphone jack and two microphone holes.

On the bottom side there is a speaker and another microphone hole.

Finally, on the left side we see two connectors: Micro-USB (for connecting to a computer and charger; support external drives no) and Micro-HDMI (we will test it in detail).

Summarizing the impressions of the BlackBerry Q10 design, let's say that this is one of the most successful BlackBerry smartphones in this regard. On the one hand, there is an obvious desire to preserve all the best for which BlackBerry devices are appreciated by the most loyal users, on the other hand, the company's designers did not blindly copy old models and proposed a number of improvements that make the new product even more attractive.

Previously, everyone who wanted to buy a top-end BlackBerry smartphone faced a difficult choice: either the BlackBerry Bold 9900 with a super-comfortable keyboard, but an uncomfortable small horizontally oriented screen, or the BlackBerry Torch 9800/9810 with a fairly large screen, but with rather small taut keys. This year, a third option has been added to this list: the all-touch BlackBerry Z10, which looks serious and up-to-date, pleases with a really large screen, but no QWERTY keyboard at all.

BlackBerry Q10 against this background seems the best choice for the classic BlackBerry audience: here is a big enough touch screen(of course, not for movies and active web surfing, but for working with mail, contacts, etc.), but also an excellent keyboard. At the same time, the smartphone is not large and fits well in the hand, and the build quality is traditionally on top.

Screen

BlackBerry Q10 is equipped with a screen resolution of 720×720 pixels. With a diagonal of 3.1 inches, this gives a good dot density of 328 ppi.

The front surface of the screen is covered with a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface, resistant to scratches. Judging by the reflection of objects, there is an anti-glare filter, the effectiveness of which is noticeably better than that of the Samsung Galaxy S4. There is no visible doubling of reflected objects, which indicates the absence of an air gap between the outer glass and the matrix surface. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating, (in this case, a little less effective than that of samsung galaxy S4, but still very effective), so fingerprints are much easier to remove and appear at a slower rate than with conventional glass.

When displaying a white field in full screen, the maximum brightness value was about 150 cd / m², the minimum - 42 cd / m². The brightness is not very high, therefore, even considering the high efficiency of the anti-glare filter and the fact that the smaller the white area on this screen, the lighter it is, on a sunny day outdoors, the readability of the screen may not be very good. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable level. There is no mode with automatic brightness adjustment depending on ambient light. When the brightness is lowered, modulation appears at a frequency of 240 Hz. The figure below shows brightness (vertical axis) versus time (horizontal axis) for three brightness settings:

It can be seen that at maximum and medium brightness there is virtually no modulation, but at minimum brightness the relative amplitude of the modulation is high, so image flicker can be seen in the test for the presence of a stroboscopic effect or simply with rapid eye movement. Depending on individual sensitivity, such flickering can cause increased fatigue.

The smartphone uses an OLED matrix - an active matrix on organic light emitting diodes. A full-color image is created using subpixels of three colors - red (R), green (G) and blue (B), but there are twice as many green subpixels, which can be referred to as RGBG. This is confirmed by a fragment of a microphoto:

In this square, you can count 4 green subpixels, 2 blue and 2 red subpixels. For such matrices Samsung introduced the name PenTile RGBG. At the same time, the arrangement and shape of subpixels in this variant do not differ from the PenTile RGBG variants implemented in the screens of Samsung Galaxy S3, Samsung ATIV S, Motorola XT925, etc., but in Samsung Galaxy S4 the variant is different. Note that the luminance is mainly determined by the green component, so the luminance sharpness actually corresponds to the density of the green subpixels. The fact that the color definition is lower (since the density of red and blue subpixels is lower) does not actually affect the quality of the image, since the color definition of human vision is also lower than the luminance definition. However, this does not mean that the image on such a screen looks exactly the same as on a screen with the same resolution, but with the same number of subpixels of different colors.

The screen has good viewing angles, though White color when deviated at relatively large angles, it acquires a noticeable blue-green tint, but the black color is truly black at any angle (although the reflection from black areas does have a color cast at some angles). So black that the contrast parameter in this case is simply not applicable. When viewed perpendicularly, the uniformity of the white field is excellent. Switching the state of the matrix elements is actually instantaneous, but there may be a 16.7 ms wide step at the turn-on edge (corresponding to a screen refresh rate of 60 Hz). Below is a plot of brightness (vertical axis) versus time (horizontal axis) obtained by going from black to white and back at maximum brightness:

In some conditions, the presence of such a step can lead to plumes trailing behind moving objects, but in normal use it is almost impossible to see these artifacts.

The gamma curve constructed from 32 points did not reveal any blockage either in the highlights or in the shadows, and the exponent of the approximating power function is 2.14, which is quite a bit lower than the standard value of 2.2, while the real gamma curve slightly deviates from the power dependence :

Note that due to the dynamic adjustment of the backlight brightness in accordance with the nature of the displayed image (brightness decreases on average bright images), the obtained dependence of brightness on hue (gamma curve) may not correspond to the gamma curve of a static image, since the measurements were carried out with sequential full screen grayscale output.

The color gamut is much wider than sRGB:

The spectra show that the primary colors are maximally separated:

As a result, the colors on this screen are very oversaturated and unnatural.

The color temperature balance is excellent - shades of gray have a color temperature of approximately 6500 K, which changes little over the entire significant part of the gray scale (the range close to black can be ignored, since the color rendering is not so important in it, and the measurement error of color characteristics is high) :

The deviation from the blackbody spectrum (delta E) is less than 10, which is considered a good indicator for a non-professional device:

In general, the indisputable advantages of the screen are an effective anti-reflective filter and a very good oleophobic coating, plus an excellent color balance, but there is no brightness reserve, and the colors are very oversaturated. A compromise for the sake of saving the battery and funds for the implementation of the color gamut correction function.

Platform and Performance

The hardware filling of the smartphone is similar to the BlackBerry Z10. As in the case of the Z10, Blackberry company released two versions of the model: with and without an LTE module. Accordingly, the models with the LTE module use SoC Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus (MSM8960), which is familiar to us from a number of devices (ASUS Padfone, Sony Xperia V, Nokia Lumia 920, etc.), and models without LTE - TI OMAP 4470. The CPUs of both single-chip systems have two cores operating at a frequency of 1.5 GHz. But Snapdragon uses its own cores, while OMAP uses Cortex-A9 cores. The main difference between the two SoCs, as you might guess, is the presence or absence of an integrated LTE modem. Moreover, in the case of the BlackBerry Q10, this is really important, because there are Russian ones among the supported frequency ranges.

We tested a model with Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus. For obvious reasons, we couldn't test it using our standard methodology: there are practically no benchmarks for BlackBerry 10 OS yet. We found only the Geekbench 2 multi-platform benchmark in the BlackBerry World store. In addition to it, of course, we launched browser tests: SunSpider 1.0, Kraken Benchmark and Octane Benchmark. Alas, the SunSpider was throwing an error on the BlackBerry Q10 - this is the first time we've seen this with this test. The results for the rest of the benchmarks are summarized in the table. For comparison with the BlackBerry Q10, we took flagship devices from other companies.

Here, of course, it is worth making a reservation that a direct comparison of the performance of the BlackBerry Q10 with Android devices is not entirely correct. First, they have different browsers, which directly affects the performance results of browser benchmarks. Secondly, the BlackBerry Q10 is geared towards slightly different use cases than most. modern smartphones. Obviously, they are not buying it for games (at least they are not the main thing they will be doing on this device) and certainly not for movies. Accordingly, the main thing that is required from the hardware is to ensure smooth operation of the interface and comfortable web surfing. The filling of the BlackBerry Q10 copes with both tasks perfectly: the speed of reaction to user actions is not satisfactory.

But for the sake of completeness, we still launched popular game Asphalt 7: Heat on BlackBerry Q10. The game took a long time to install (several minutes, after it was fully downloaded to the device), and for some reason it crashed several times when trying to start at least some track. But when we managed to launch the race, we had no complaints about performance and stability.

However, racing on the Q10 is a specific pleasure. Judge for yourself: a small square screen does not allow you to enjoy great graphics (despite the rather high density of pixels), and control by tilting the device (available on all other devices, including the BlackBerry Z10) is somehow impossible here. The swipe up gesture, which achieves a nitro boost, is also not available here (you have to aim at a small button to trigger it). The car has to be controlled either by touching the screen on the left and right side (which corresponds to turning the steering wheel), or with the K and D keys (third from the right and third from the left in the center row). In principle, the idea of using the hardware keys for the game is a good one, but here we are faced with another problem: pressing the keys adjusts the course of the car too much, it is not possible to turn a little.

We describe the problems with Asphalt 7 in such detail not because this particular game on the BlackBerry Q10 is important to us, but because it is a good example of the gaming capabilities of the device in principle. That is, Q10 is productive enough to work modern games, but in fact you can’t play them comfortably - at most, kill a few minutes of time in the subway. Apparently, game developers understand this, which is why, for example, N.O.V.A. 3, available on the BlackBerry Z10, is not available on the Q10. Although, on the other hand, Modern Combat 4 can be purchased for only 99 cents, but how to play a shooter here is generally incomprehensible.

HDMI interface test

Additionally, the HDMI interface was tested (recall that the smartphone has a Micro-HDMI output). To test it, we used an LG IPS237L monitor and a simple micro HDMI to regular HDMI cable. When connected via HDMI, the choice of the operating mode of this interface becomes available - you can select several options for resolution and frame rate. We tested in 1080p at 60Hz. An exact copy of the smartphone screen is displayed on the monitor screen with an actual resolution equal to the resolution of the smartphone screen (720 × 720), while on the monitor screen the image height is equal to the height of the display area, and black fields are displayed on the right and left. HDMI audio is output (in this case, the sounds were heard through the headphones connected to the monitor, since there are no speakers in the monitor itself) and has a very good quality. At the same time, at least, multimedia sounds are not output through the loudspeaker of the smartphone itself, and the volume is controlled by the buttons on the smartphone case. However, in the settings you can turn off the sound output via HDMI, and then it will be output through the phone's speaker.

Given the size and resolution of the smartphone screen, the actual resolution of the images displayed on the monitor, as well as their aspect ratio, there is no point in using this device to watch movies. However, tests have shown that files up to 1080p at 30 fps are output with more or less uniform frame interleaving and without frame drops, and 1080p at 50 and 60 fps are no longer played. The brightness range displayed on the smartphone screen exactly corresponds to the standard one - in the shadows and in the highlights, all shades of the “video” range are displayed, while on the monitor in the highlights and in the shadows, some of the gradations of shades disappear. After a while, the screen of the smartphone itself turns off, but the output to the monitor does not stop. It turns out that, in principle, it is possible to use an external monitor for work, but the actual image resolution and the use of only a small area of the widescreen monitor screen impose significant limitations. It is not at all clear why the need for this device HDMI interface.

Communication functions

As already noted, the BlackBerry Q10 came out in a variant with and without an LTE module. Moreover, the version with LTE also exists in three versions: SQN100-1, SQN100-3 and SQN100-4. They differ in the supported LTE frequency bands. In order for the smartphone to work in Russian LTE networks, you need to take SQN100-3. Therefore, if LTE support is critical for you, and you plan to buy a smartphone on the “gray” market or abroad, then pay attention to this parameter. To find out the exact modification, you need to go to Settings and open the top menu item - Details. Scroll down the page a little and you will see the model number.

We tested exactly SQN100-3. The performance of LTE was tested with a Megafon SIM card. The smartphone recognized the network without any problems, and 4G appeared in the upper right corner. However, here it should be taken into account that 4G (LTE) coverage in Moscow is uneven. Therefore, the situation is not ruled out that the 4G icon and two or three "sticks" of the reception level will be displayed, but in reality it will be impossible to do anything.

A big plus is that in the BlackBerry 10 operating system, you can choose different options for how your smartphone interacts with networks - put automatic switching(for example, if it does not catch 4G, but there is 3G, then the smartphone will use 3G) or select the networks between which the smartphone can choose (for example, 3G and 4G, but without EDGE and GPRS) or strictly assign one network.

As for the quality of telephone reception, there are no complaints here. The sound is of high quality, the interlocutor is heard well and he also hears us normally, the voice is not distorted.

Operating system and applications

The smartphone runs on the new BlackBerry 10 operating system. We dedicated it to her, having studied its features using the BlackBerry Z10 as an example. Almost everything said there is true for the BlackBerry Q10, with three exceptions.

First, of course, the interface in the BlackBerry Q10 is optimized for a 1:1 aspect ratio.

Secondly, one of key features BlackBerry 10 - a "smart" keyboard that displays hints when typing, is not presented in Q10. The reason for this is quite understandable: a virtual keyboard is simply not needed when there is a physical one and it is always at hand. And, besides, there is simply no place on the screen for a virtual keyboard.

Third, the Q10 comes preloaded with the BlackBerry 10.1 update. There are no fundamental changes there, but there are a number of small improvements: for example, HDR mode is now available when taking photos, you can also send emails with attachments from the Hub, the ability to copy phone number from text and inserting it into the dial string.

Note that this update is also available for the BlackBerry Z10, you just need to install it yourself.

cameras

Like the BlackBerry Z10, the BlackBerry Q10 is equipped with two cameras: front and rear. Permission front camera- 2 MP, and it can support 720p video transmission. When we tested the BlackBerry Z10, we weren't able to test the camera for its intended purpose, because Skype wasn't yet available on BlackBerry 10 OS. Skype is now. It can be installed from BlackBerry World.

We checked the video connection, everything works fine, the quality is normal.

The rear camera is focused on photo and video shooting. Its resolution is 8 megapixels (when shooting in 4:3 mode).

In the camera settings, you can set shooting in 16:9 format (default), 4:3 and 1:1. The maximum resolution (3264×2448) will be obtained in the second case. When shooting 16:9, the resolution will be 3264×1836. Here is an example of a snapshot (the original is available by clicking).

With a 1:1 aspect ratio, the resolution will be 2448×2448. An example frame is below. Colleagues wittily remarked that this is the Instagram format. It's a pity that just Instagram on BlackBerry 10 is not yet available...

As you can see, the quality of all images is very decent (the original images are available by clicking).

With our standard task - shooting a magazine page in daylight - the smartphone did an excellent job: the text is perfectly clear and legible in all pictures. Here is an enlarged fragment.

We talked about camera control features and TimeShift mode in the BlackBerry Z10 review. In Q10, everything is similar.

Videos can be shot in 1920×1080 resolution (1280×720 is set by default). Here is an example video (30 seconds, MP4, 61.9 MB). The quality is very decent, although there are still small twitching and blurring.

In general, the camera, although it does not have the parameters of top-end smartphone cameras and cannot boast of any special technologies (such as PureView), can be classified as one of the advantages of the BlackBerry Q10.

Offline work

One of our biggest complaints about the BlackBerry Z10 was its short battery life. battery life. In a typical usage scenario for BlackBerry devices (lots of mail, SMS, telephone conversations, no games and videos) the smartphone did not even live until the end of the day.

The BlackBerry Q10 has a slightly better situation (apparently, it affects significantly smaller size screen and AMOLED-matrix, a little more economical than IPS), it will work for a day. But at night it still has to be put on charge. So, the Q10 does not reach the level of the BlackBerry Torch 9800, which worked quietly for two days, but the BlackBerry Bold 9900 (of which it is the direct successor) is no longer inferior.

Testing the duration of video playback, we found it useless, since the BlackBerry Q10 is definitely not suitable for watching movies and even YouTube videos. As far as games go, you can expect significantly longer runtimes than the Z10 (Asphalt 7 can be played for about 4.5 hours), but this again is due to the significantly smaller screen and resolution (720×720 vs 1280× 720). But games do not seem to us the main scenario for using the BlackBery Q10.

Thus, the battery life of the BlackBerry Q10 is on par with Android smartphones of a similar class.

conclusions

After the bold and, in general, skeptical BlackBerry Z10 perceived by many users, which is too far from BlackBerry traditions, the Canadian manufacturer has launched a model on the market that combines the best of BlackBerry's past years and the capabilities of the new BlackBerry 10 operating system. We can say that BlackBerry Q10 - this is an improved and modernized version of the BlackBerry Bold 9900. The same form factor, similar (and no less comfortable) QWERTY keyboard, excellent performance and about the same battery life... But on the other hand, a larger and better screen, support for LTE (including Russian frequencies) and, of course, a completely new BlackBerry 10 operating system. Among the shortcomings, I would include HDMI support that is useless in its current form (implemented, apparently, for show), the lack of BIS service and the inability to work in BlackBerry Bridge mode. But these are, rather, shortcomings of the OS as such, rather than a specific device. And among the objective features of a smartphone is its unsuitability for multimedia tasks and games. But this, perhaps, is realized by any user who chooses a device in the QWERTY monoblock form factor.

Overall, Q10 is one of best smartphones BlackBerry. It is with such devices that you can return the love of business users who are discouraged by the dominance of monotonous "shovels" and "remnants" on the market and miss the physical QWERTY keyboard. For such users, there are no alternatives to the BlackBerry Q10 right now. The Bold 9900 is already morally obsolete in two years, and the competitors don't offer anything similar (shouldn't we take Nokia's budget QWERTY phones from the Asha line seriously?).

Of course, the BlackBerry Q10 isn't perfect. But all the shortcomings are connected, first of all, with the operating system itself. And even the strange work of HDMI, apparently, is due not to hardware limitations, but to software flaws. So if the developers of BlackBerry push, then, quite possibly, the Q10 will soon become even more attractive. And we will look forward to the release of this device in Russia.

Pros: Good design, keyboard, hub, OS, brand. Disadvantages: none Comment: At the beginning of use, the battery was dying by 6 pm and this was very upsetting. But managed to find the cause by turning off in parental control BBM, which was not connected to me, but for some reason constantly ate traffic and drained the battery. Then I turned off the remaining twitter that I didn’t use, etc. in the same place. and the phone, with active use, by this time showed a charge already at 70%. I recommend to buy.

Pros: 1. QWERY-keyboard No details here: this is the best keyboard on phones that I used. Branded "beveled" letters - it's sooooo convenient! After 2-3 weeks, I got used to it so much that I can type text without looking and without thinking about which key is which. 2. Battery My phone lives fully for 2 full days (36-40 hours), while I use the phone a day in the following proportions: calls: 1 hour, almost constantly the bodies are connected to Wi-Fi; two accounts for mail are connected - work and Gmail, synchronization of mail, calendar and contacts for two accounts once every 2 hours. Twitter and surfing the Internet on average 1.5-2 hours. 3. Build quality. Monolithic and pleasant to the touch. I really did not fully understand what the back cover is made of, but the main thing is that it does not slip in my hands at all. 4. The quality of voice communication Previously, I did not understand the pig vostok on this topic by the owner of the BB. Now I understand Very good reception in hard-to-reach places and incredibly clear audibility + according to the interlocutors, good suppression of external noise. 5. BB Hub Before the purchase, this functionality caused some skepticism, but after setting it up for myself, I realized that it is very convenient and essentially has no analogues on another platform. Personal and work mail can be marked with different colors and set up different events upon receipt. Each connected service immediately receives its own “folder” in the hub, which is also very convenient. And with the advent of Priority Hub, it has become even more convenient. 6. Browser It's hard to believe, but the built-in browser opens "heavy" pages faster than an iPad or HTC One all else being equal. Convenient reading function. 7. OS BB 10 - surprisingly fast and nimble. If they continue to develop at such a pace, it will become ideal)) Disadvantages: 1. Lack of native "bow" applications For example, Vivino, Lingvo, Vedomosti, Instagram. There is no integration with Google Drive yet. 2. Expensive accessories in Russia. Have to order via e-bay Russian Internet accessories stores are 2-3-4 times more expensive than the same ones on ebay. Comment: Before that there were Nokia e71, e63 and e9 keyboards. Then I had to switch to a touch phone. After walking with him for six months, I realized that it was terribly annoying typing on virtual keyboard and the need to constantly monitor the battery level. Because Now there are only BB adequate qwerty-smartphones on the market, then there was no choice. Summary: If before that there was an experience of using qwerty-phones and you liked this form factor, then definitely a must have. If you need high-quality communication from a “phone” device, ease of working with e-mail and a calendar, a relatively tenacious battery and no games are needed, then this is also an excellent option.

Advantages: 1. Blackberry. 2. Very good build quality, strict design, fits comfortably in the hand, and overall looks great. 3. Qwerty. And not just qwerty, but very convenient qwerty. Until recently, I thought that the top of convenience and perfection was the keyboard on my old 9700, it turned out not, on the q10 you can develop just the same cosmic typing speeds. It's unusual that the layout has changed, but it's getting used to. The selection of words for 5 plus, I especially like the memorization system. Some words, or even phrases, do not even have to be printed. Programmed key commands (space-down, t-up, l-refresh, etc.), for example, can be written to Twitter by simply starting to type "tv", and such quick commands a lot of. 4.OS10. 5 years as the owner of an iPod touch and a year as an iPad, and after a couple of weeks of using q10 out of habit, I already began to try to unlock my apple technology with a swipe from the bottom edge of the screen, and also try to minimize the application with a swipe up. Very, very and once again very intuitive operating system. Hub-special thanks to the guys from Blackberry, I wonder why no one thought of it before. 4.1. Multitasking. Yes, true multitasking. This is when you turned on the video on YouTube, set it to load pages in the browser and at that time you answer SMS and everything works right away and without brakes. 5. The screen is rich, bright, does not glare. 6. Very fast browser. I don’t really know whose merit it is - the browser, the smartphone itself or 4G, but the pages load instantly, by the way, the browser itself is also good, the reading mode is well done. Disadvantages: 1. Few applications. There is, of course, the possibility of porting android applications, but I would like more native ones and not such rubbish as it is now in the appworld. 2. There is no normal navigation. At least for Russia. 3. Battery. With average activity, I have enough until late in the evening, when I come home and put it on charge. On 4G, it lands the battery right before our eyes. For some reason it takes a long time to load. 4. Camera. It shoots well in principle, there is a time shift, hdr and even a built-in editor, but I don’t like how it focuses. Half of the shots are blurry, you can't catch a snapshot. Comment: I have been waiting for this device for a long time, I wanted to wait for the growth, but it seems that it will not be soon, so I took the gray one from the online store. Before that, I had 9700 for several years, and I didn’t plan to change the phone until it breaks, but it never broke, it still works smartly, although it has gone through a lot. Q10 I have a little less than a month, and so far it suits me completely. Blackberry took a huge step forward, abandoned BIS and created a new OS. The phone is not worth buying for those who expect games and entertainment from it, the Q10 is not one of a billion identical touch black bricks on android or ios. First of all, I am very satisfied with it as a phone: it is heard clearly, well, loudly, the signal is also good, where sometimes others give up (megaphone + 4g), it is convenient to type text (those who also do not like to poke at glass will understand me), the icons are drawn beautifully, and in general, in general, the impressions so far are only positive. Skype, by the way, is not buggy.

Advantages: Great sound, excellent speakerphone (including Skype). Very convenient Blackbury Hub End-to-end search is strong! It is very convenient to call, send SMS, letters. The keyboard is better than any virtual one. Very handy hotkey system. Gestures are awesome! Now I just don’t understand how you can work normally without them :) Disadvantages: Native Viber does not work on this particular device. The Android version works but does not display Russian letters in contacts: (There is no Google hangout, I hope they will screw it up with time. Comment: When I bought it, I knew that there were few applications, I took it more as a communicator and a hub where various data streams flow. I left all the goodies, toys on a tablet. The declared support for android programs works but not with all applications: (But the manufacturer is moving in this direction, I think that over time everything will be fine. The keyboard is comfortable, if there were still factory engraving of Russian letters ... After android, you have to get used to another after counting all the pros and cons, I decided to leave the phone. there are some berries :) Neutron - an excellent music player BeMaps Pro - an add-on for gugmaps. Skype - native, works, does not crash. That's what I didn't expect from the device, it's excellent music playback :) It turned out to be a pleasant surprise, now the headphones are connected only to it: ) Still lacking Viber and some applications from Google. Google applications are not put in any way, their policy is this: (Compared to BB10, android seems like a dreary product.

Experience of use: several months

Advantages: Operating system: 1. Stability and reliability. Any critical problems and program freezes are extremely rare. Even if the application freezes, you can simply exit and close it, and this will not affect the operation of the entire system. 2. Genuine multitasking. For example, if you are downloading a file in some program and then a letter arrives, then after going to the mailbox (any other program), the download of the file will continue in the background. 3. Open file system. File manager provides access not only to internal memory and memory card, but also the ability to connect to dropbox and box, as well as to a dedicated folder on your computer. I can mail files (several of them) from several sources in one letter. This was at one time one of the key reasons for abandoning the iPad as the main working tool. 4. Gesture control. Keyboard 1. QWERTY. The buttons are very convenient, I was waiting for the Q10, not the Z10. 2. On the iPad, it is insanely annoying to have to constantly and constantly switch the layout to put a comma, re-type numbers after a space, and so on, and to get to the plus sign, you have to press the button to change the layout twice. In qwerty, Q10 has an alt button that solves all these problems. 3. Keyboard shortcuts. BlackBerry Hub 1. As many have mentioned, it's incredibly convenient. I can answer emails from all my mailboxes, write SMS, update my Facebook status, tweet, see who called me and call me back inside one hub without opening any program. 2. After self-flashing to version 10.2, a priority hub appeared, where all letters, sms and missed calls of selected contacts can get. 3. Again, after flashing, I can answer all text messages without leaving active programs. Lots of other little things. Disadvantages: 1. Battery. Takes a maximum of one day. After the BlackBerry 9780, which lived quietly for three days, this is sad. 2. A small number of applications are described by everyone. Although there is everything to work. Maybe a viber would be more. I don't play games. 3. In old version axis, it was possible to bind a contact to a button, when pressed, a call was made from the desktop. 4. There is no call button. 5. Dancing with a tambourine when flashing. Comment: Q10 has been my companion for a couple of months now. I almost never answer emails from my laptop. After a couple of days of use, I regularly try to turn on the iPad with a swipe from the bottom edge of the screen. Good working tool

The user has hidden his data

User experience: less than a month

Pros: keyboard, call quality, strict classic design, nimble operating system Cons: Sometimes when scrolling down the screen, windows pop up running programs- you need to get used to it a little (or scroll with a space), there are few applications (Android ones are unstable), the screen size after keyboardless smartphones seems small, but you quickly get used to it. battery lasts 7 hours at maximum display brightness, internet and navigation on (enough for a day with moderate use) Comment: The connection quality is simply amazing after HTC - very clear and clear sound, the signal is better! I bought it in Europe without Russian letters - I type blindly in a week - the keyboard is amazing! the word selection dictionary works for five plus (the words you often type in remain in memory, I print any word by no more than a third - then I choose what the system offers). The operating system is very fast. in fact three blocks - 1) hub where all your messages are dumped mailboxes, facebook, whatsap, sms, incoming outgoing data, birthday notifications from a contact. it all goes into one basket! It's insanely convenient, you won't miss a single message! 2) all running programs 3) menu of installed programs. No freezes, transitions between any programs without delay are instant! The only thing is that there are not enough widgets after HTC! A very convenient phone search system - swipe up on the screen (so it turns on) then you can type sms or call and part of the contact name. all the phone rings the recipient or you type a message. you can also find any program, photo or file without immediately entering the corresponding applications. I found this little thing convenient. you can also, for example, without going to twitter or facebook, change the status: write twit or face in the search menu and then the status! Summary: the phone is not for games, the screen is small, sometimes it’s not very convenient to surf the Internet because of this. But in principle, you get used to it quickly and it’s not that annoying. you will not find any stupid applications "for the sake of playing" as for android, there are really few of them. Phone for work, for correspondence, the keyboard is super, HUB is a very convenient thing! Well, the connection is beyond praise! Note: on my box with the phone it says that networks in France may not be supported. Indeed - the network disappeared very often in Paris. so who often dangles there - consider!

The user has hidden his data

User experience: less than a month

Advantages: 1.Design 2.Battery (unlike android devices) 3.Operation (smart works) without any lags. 4.Camera (under normal lighting, decent photos are obtained) 5.The keyboard is very comfortable, typing is a pleasure 6.Sound transmission 7.Browser Disadvantages: 1.Lack of function keys (does not eat them) 2.There are few Blackberry World applications 3.Q10 is not oriented for playing games and watching videos, because of the screen size, who needs a multimedia device, it is better to take the BB Z10. Comment: Conclusion: Before buying BB used Nokia E71, E72. The Blackberry Q10 is a decent phone despite some downsides. Completely satisfied with the purchase!

What can be found in the box? In addition to the smartphone itself, there is a charging adapter and a spare European plug. To connect the charging plug to the Q10, a regular microUSB cable is used. He, of course, is also present, but even if something happens to him, it will be easy to find a replacement. Boxes with economy segment gadgets often contain additional accessories: here you can also find a stereo headset and spare earbuds.

The design of the model can be safely called branded, because gadgets from Blackberry cannot be confused with anything. Although, in fairness it should be said that the Q10 strongly resembles an old QWERTY smartphone from Nokia. The screen occupies almost half of the entire front space, and the rest is given over to the keyboard. Sloping side edges, rounded corners and relatively small dimensions (weight is only 139 grams, and dimensions - 120x67x10.5 mm) allow Q10 to fit comfortably in your hand. the case is almost entirely made of reliable plastic, and the back side, moreover, imitates carbon fiber.

Performance: the main thing is not to confuse anything

The Blackberry Q10 has many modifications that differ not only in chipsets, but also in the frequency of the cores. This smartphone can use two processors - TI OMAP 4470 with two cores operating at a frequency of 1.5 GHz, or Qualcomm's MSM8960, where two cores operate at the same frequency, but LTE is also additionally supported (three versions of the gadget). If the latter is necessary, then you should carefully study the technical specifications before buying.

There can also be two video accelerators - Adreno 225 or PowerVR SGX544. It's hard to rate video chips by the quality of video playback or games, because the Q10 is not focused on entertainment at all (at least, games and movies are unlikely to be the main way to use it). But both Adreno and PowerVR have already established themselves in the market as reliable accelerators.

The amount of memory is quite enough - the RAM is 2 GB, and 16 GB is allocated for the needs of the user (of which about 13 GB are available). But if you wish, you can connect an additional microSD card up to 64 GB.

Own OS

Q10 runs on the proprietary Blackberry 10.1 operating system. Visually, the desktop and the interface are generally similar to iOs: you can also group and change the location of icons, there is a very similar search (although it still does not reach the competitor in terms of functionality).

In general, the interface is not much different from the predecessor of the line. Among some differences, one can note the study for a ratio of 1: 1, the absence of " smart keyboard” (indeed, it is not needed where there is a full-fledged QWERTY).

Screen: compromise for a larger diagonal

To get a convenient and comfortable display, the manufacturer had to abandon the joystick and four familiar control buttons. This made it possible to increase the screen to 3.1 inches diagonally. The resolution was 720x720 pixels. As is clear from the resolution, the display turned out to be square and this is one of the serious drawbacks. Images are usually elongated either diagonally or vertically, which means that they do not completely fit into the screen.

But what there are no complaints about is the quality of the picture. The display uses AMOLED technology. The smartphone displays more than 16 million colors and the color quality does not change much, even if you look at the picture at an angle.

There is a light sensor, so the display brightness can be changed both manually and automatically. In any case, it will be comfortable to work, although readability may deteriorate somewhat in very bright light.

Two modest cameras

Front and horizontal cameras are available in 2 megapixel and 8 megapixel resolution. By today's standards, that's not much at all. With a resolution of 2 megapixels, it is difficult to take a high-quality picture, and even when communicating via Skype, you can’t see the details.

The main camera is more thought out. With the OS update to version 10.1, the camera began to support HDR mode. Given the resolution (and at the maximum aspect ratio of 16:9 it turns out 3264x2448 pixels), the frames are quite clear and detailed.

Outcome: improved and finalized

You can compare the Q10, perhaps, only with its predecessor Bold 9900. But even in this comparison, the hero of the review wins, because it combines a user-friendly keyboard that users love, excellent performance for its level and good battery life. But this model has received some improvements - more new version OS, more camera features. So Blackberry Q10 remains a real salvation for those who prefer comfortable push-button smartphones, but is not ready to sacrifice quality by acquiring outdated and outdated devices.

Positioning

Nostalgia is one of the strongest feelings known to a person - it is enough to recall a toy from childhood that was common in your country in an unfamiliar company, and the job is done: adult, serious people begin to recall with fervor how they played enthusiastically. At Research in Motion, in the absence of sound ideas to change the crisis, they decided to rely solely on nostalgia, even renaming themselves Blackberry to remind them of the good old days. It's surprising that the company didn't release a QWERTY smartphone at the same time as Blackberry 10, its new operating system, which should have evoked a strong sense of nostalgia, for which it would have been bought. The touch Z10 was the first to enter the market, which turned out to be in demand by an audience that had never dealt with the company's devices before. Traditional users of Blackberry-branded devices needed and waited for a QWERTY keyboard.

Perhaps, the way the accents were placed at the release of Q10 and Z10 speaks of how the company itself perceives the QWERTY device market - it is dying. Blackberry sales are far from successful, the QWERTY segment is shrinking everywhere and losing the battle touch smartphones. Therefore, the Z10 was the first to come out - a smartphone devoid of a keyboard, although this is not at all logical for a Blackberry. Yes, and both devices were ready at the same time, but for marketing reasons, the company decided to promote the Z10 as the flagship. It's a shame that the theme of QWERTY-smartphones is not just going nowhere, they are disappearing as a class, and Blackberry feels it in their own skin. Considering the market through the prism of the destruction of QWERTY devices, we can say that the Q10 is the best device, since it has no competitors from other manufacturers, and, in fact, from Blackberry. The previous model Bold 9900, which can be regarded as an analogue of the Q10, came out a long time ago, had a number of serious complaints and did not become a cult, like previous devices under this name. In fact, one can consider that Q10 is a continuation of Bold, which came out late and does not have any special advantages on modern market, except for the QWERTY keyboard. This product will be of interest only to those who have been familiar with Blackberry for a long time and for some reason remain faithful to QWERTY smartphones, but do not like touch devices. There simply can't be any other reason to choose the Q10.

Design, dimensions, controls

The appearance of the Q10 is typical of Blackberry smartphones, this model is easily recognizable and cannot be confused with anything else. The screen occupies half of the body, and the second part is reserved for the QWERTY-keyboard. The screen race that has affected the world of smartphones is impossible for QWERTY devices, since it requires a completely different key space, hence there is always a compromise in the choice of display diagonal - in Q10 it is 3.1 inches, which sounds very frivolous against the background of modern 5-inch displays. In the same body size! But about the comparison of the screens a little later, for now let's dwell on the dimensions of the device. Case size - 119.6 x 66.8 x 10.4 mm, weight - 139 grams. The phone lies perfectly in the hand, there are no complaints, it is well balanced. As usual, there are two color options - black and white.

The on / off button, which is also responsible for unlocking the device, was moved to the upper end - exactly the same was done in previous devices. But if in the Bold 9900 it was possible to activate the screen with the physical “Hang up” button on the keyboard, then this row of function keys was abandoned in favor of a larger screen diagonal. It has become not very convenient, the preservation of the controls, as in the previous device, does not give continuity in sensations, rather the opposite. It would be logical to move this key to the side, but no one thought about it.

There is also a 3.5 mm headset jack on the top end, the bundled headset is surprisingly pleasant.

On the left side there is an HDMI connector, as well as microUSB. I am sure that the number of those who need HDMI in the phone itself is calculated in units - I doubt that it was worth doing. There is nothing wrong with having HDMI, it should be considered as an additional feature, and nothing more.

The LED indicator was brought to the front surface, it is to the right of the speaker grille. There is a proximity sensor, front camera.

On the right side there are two sound level adjustment keys, and in the middle there is a button responsible for different actions depending on the menu, it can also be configured for your own actions.

Back cover easily removed, inside you will see the battery and the SIM card slot. The plastic of which the case is made is soft, very pleasant to the touch, has a carbon-like pattern.

From the point of view of ergonomics, the model turned out to be somewhat worse than the Bold 9900 - the fault is the rejection of physical buttons and a joystick on the front panel, a little more weight and thickness. But in general, this is a typical QWERTY-smartphone from the company, which is perceived in this capacity.

Display

The compromise reached by the Q10 developers in pursuit of a larger diagonal is the rejection of the additional row of buttons and joystick that was in the previous Bold. Let me remind you that there the screen diagonal was 2.8 inches with a resolution of 640x480 pixels. In my opinion, increasing the screen diagonal to 3.1 inches was not critical, but the lack of keys greatly affects the ergonomics of the solution.

Screen type AMOLED (16 million colors), resolution 720x720 pixels (328 dots per inch), which looks unusual from all sides. The squareness of the screen does not allow you to stretch videos or photos to the entire surface, part of the surface always disappears, is not used. And this is a serious minus, since it is impossible to call the Q10 a multimedia device. Yes, it plays different file formats, but the screen size makes it all useless. Trying to watch a movie on such a screen will turn into a disappointment.

Screen brightness is adjusted automatically or independently. But compared to the Z10, the display is dimmer (the Z10 has a regular TFT matrix). The explanation should be sought both in a different type of screen, and in the desire to save energy, increase the operating time - this was the main complaint about Bold.

Battery

Phones from Blackberry have always been famous for the fact that they were able to work for a long time, and this was one of the features of the brand, its strong point. Already in the Blackberry 9900, the battery life has become a weak point that most users have complained about. There was a hope that with the release of the new OS, code optimization and the use of the old chipset would allow for long-term operation, but this did not happen.

The phone uses lithium ion battery 2100 mAh capacity. According to the manufacturer, it can provide up to 310 hours of standby time and up to 10 hours of talk time. In my opinion, these indicators are very crafty, since in ordinary life the device works much less and the operating time depends heavily on what you are doing and how you charge it.

The situation with the Z10 is completely repeated, with only one difference - here the battery capacity is slightly larger, but there is no sense in this. Third-party applications drain the battery with a bang, if they have Push notifications, then consider that you will have to say goodbye to the phone after a few hours of work (Instagram reports events once a minute, here it killed the phone in a record three and a half hours). The problem of Q10 in terms of operating time is by no means connected with the device itself, but with the operating system. Even using the old chipset didn't make the phone any better.

Total - on average, a smartphone works from morning and hours until 6-7 pm, if you do not bet third party programs, turn off social networks in the Hub and use only mail with interval checking (well, or Push if you don’t have as much mail as I do). When you try to use all the features of a smartphone without looking back, you will get 5-7 hours of work, then a trip to the outlet. This is a rather depressing picture, which completely repeats that of the Bold 9900.

QWERTY keyboard

The Bold 9900 had an excellent keyboard, it was not spoiled here too - 4 rows of keys, good pressing, a week after the start of use, you can type without looking. Of the serious disadvantages is the lack of support for hardware keys in Blackberry 10, that is, at the operating system level, the developers did not make it possible to fully work with the keyboard. To select a field, you need to click on the screen, and only then you can enter text. The feeling that the developers forgot about the roots and made the device specially raw in this aspect. The presence of a keyboard is completely killed by such interface "finds", its use becomes not very pleasant.

Hardware platform, performance

The model is available in two versions - with the TI OMAP 4470 chipset, this is a dual-core processor with a maximum frequency of 1.5 GHz (model SQN100-1), and also on the MSM8960 chipset from Qualcomm - it is also dual-core and with the same frequency, the only difference is support for LTE. There are three versions based on the Qualcomm chipset - SQN100-2, SQN100-3, SQN100-4, they differ in frequencies and distribution regions. In order for LTE to work in Russia, you need to choose the SQN100-3 model, which is exactly what I had.

Complaints about the speed of the phone in system applications, there is no interface. Everything is quite fast and smooth, but, unfortunately, there is no such speed as on the iPhone 5. Fast, but not too fast. For most users, the speed of work will seem sufficient. True, there is one trick here - with the warming up of the case, the application launch time increases, and the speed of their work decreases. Sometimes apps naturally freeze and you wait for your phone to unload them from memory.

Memory, memory cards

The device is available in only one version with 16 GB of internal memory, of which 10.8 GB is available to you. Can install microSD card memory capacity up to 64 GB, which will solve all your memory problems. In my opinion, this is more than enough for most people, and there are no pitfalls.

The amount of RAM is 2 GB, of which 1.3 GB is available after the system boots. Up to 8 applications can be opened in memory, which provides enough memory for all tasks. However, memory management is not optimal, there are often situations when trying to download a new application leads to slow phone performance, you need to close applications in memory to speed it up.

Communication options

When connected to a PC, the phone automatically detects operating system(MacOS/Windows) and offers to install Blackberry Link, which is downloaded from the company's website. Only after installing this program will drivers be installed that will allow you to see the phone's memory as removable media. For a memory card, such dances with a tambourine are not needed, it is immediately visible as a removable medium.

In my opinion, this is a very stupid idea, as it limits the connection of the Q10 to only places where you can install a synchronization program (if you are not using a card, but only the built-in memory). Visible when plugged in virtual disk with drivers and setup file, but the attempt to manually install the drivers was unsuccessful (in Windows, I also liked the request to restart the computer - why so much fuss around the usual USB Mass Storage?).

Bluetooth version 4.0, yes NFC support, as well as dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n and hardware GPS. There is nothing to say - everything works, and thanks for that.

Camera - photo and video

Blackberry usually didn't pay special attention cameras in their phones and did not chase megapixels. The Z10 is the first Blackberry to feature an 8-megapixel camera with LED flash (using the OmniVision OV8830 chip with BSI2 technology), while the Q10 has retained it.

You can call the camera by long pressing on its icon, you will see a very simple interface. You can shoot by touching the screen anywhere (when set to continuous shooting, then it will go as long as you hold your finger). The focus point can be changed by simply dragging it to the side. You can also zoom in with your fingers. Geotags are supported, flash works in automatic mode.

Of the interesting features, only Time Shift is worth mentioning, this is a technology from Scalado, which was bought by Nokia not so long ago, and Lumia has something similar. You can take multiple shots of your friends' faces and then select the expression you like for each face. That is, you do not need to choose different photos, just set the right faces. A curious feature that is not so interesting in Everyday life. You can see how it works in the video for the Z10, there are no differences in the Q10.

Pictures on the screen of the phone do not look too impressive, the backlight when viewing them is not too bright (and there is no way to fix this). But on a computer they look good, although the algorithm for improving their quality is clearly visible (brightness is stretched, details are lost - they tried to make the pictures brighter). In the Z10 review, you can see a comparison with the Galaxy S3 (link here), and below are sample shots from the Q10.
