But there are situations when you need to be able to answer this question, for example, if you need to configure your home router yourself.

Classification

Currently applied Various types connection to the Internet, in order to accurately determine your own type of connection, that is, the type of connection provided to the user by the provider, you need to read the contract or study the instructions below.

Connections can be broadly classified into three main types:

  1. Connection by local network;
  2. Connection via virtual private network;
  3. Using different variations of type 1 and type 2, i.e. combined connection.

The local network

The subscriber connects using an Ethernet LAN network and there are no additional connections.

Simply connect the computer with one of two types of cable:

  • Optical;
  • "Twisted pair" type.

It should be noted that this type of connection has the following two subtypes:

  1. Dynamic – DHCP, which can be classified as simple types, since the user does not need to enter settings parameters. Just insert the wire into the PC and all the necessary characteristics will be sent to automatic mode.
  2. Static – IP. In this case, the IP address is fixed and you need to manually enter the network parameters. The settings are specified in the contract documents of the communication service provider with the client. The following required configuration characteristics must be specified: IP, subnet mask, DNS and gateway.

In this menu you can easily change the characteristics in accordance with the data specified in the contract with the provider.

Note: Often in these two subtypes, binding to the “MAC” address is used.

Today, the cable type of Internet connection via a WAN connector still occupies a leading position in the popularity rating among users.

The main advantage is high speed at relatively low prices for service company tariffs.

Providers connect clients in this case in the following ways:

a) using fiber optic cable;

b) via twisted pair.

Optical cable

If the user is connected to a fiber optic line, then he receives an advantage in the speed of data transfer over the network (can reach impressive values ​​​​up to 1 gigabit per second).

In the case when the subscriber, in addition to the usual Internet access, also uses additional services provider. Many people are watching interactive television, use telephony, etc.

There is no problem with laying additional wires. Services are provided over one single optical cable.

twisted pair

This is an outdated option, but still common. To implement it, use copper wires. Externally, they differ from optical fiber, since they have a smaller cross-section; using this criterion, it is easy to determine the type of cable installed in the user’s home.

Just look and compare their external thickness (“optics” is much thicker than twisted pair). It should be noted that in terms of speed, this type of connection is much inferior to optical. As a rule, it does not exceed even one hundred megabits per second.

Virtual network

In this case, the subscriber connects using a VPN with the obligatory entry of a name and access code.

This type is divided into the following connection types (encrypted communication protocols):

  1. PPPoE. This is one of the most common types. In order to provide access to world wide web In the settings wizard, click “Connect to the Internet”. Next, click “Set up a connection manually” and specify the connection type of the same name.
  2. PPTP. To connect to the global network, you just need to click “Connect to workplace” in the setup wizard. After that, select the “Connect to a virtual private network” column. Then enter the VPN server address.
  3. L2TP. Many modern providers now use this type of connection, so it has also become widespread. To connect, you first need to follow the steps described for the second type and then open the properties and go to the “Network” tab, where in the VPN column indicate: “L2TP with IPSec”.

To find out what type of VPN is used on your PC, you need to click the connection icon in the right corner of the taskbar and enter the “Information” section.

The method is no longer used almost anywhere in the world, with the exception of Russian Federation. This type is complex and implies “Dual access” with a combination of connections through local and private networks.

This ensures simultaneous access to external global and internal channels of the Internet provider (interactive television, peering, etc.).

Various options are also used using local and VPN connections, For example:

  1. Access to the global network is carried out using the PPPoE protocol and the address for working in the LAN network is assigned automatically, and access to the external network is carried out with dynamic distribution of routes.
  2. Routes and addresses for connecting via PPPoE are organized using statically specified parameters.
  3. Access to the Internet is carried out using PPTP, while the internal IP is assigned automatically, and routes are distributed through the DHCP option, which can be specified independently or issued automatically.
  4. This option is similar to the previous 3rd type, but the addresses are static, that is, they are set manually.

The above combinations can be used in options for providing the Internet via L2TP.

Phone line

If it is not possible to connect a subscriber to the network via “optics” due to its remoteness, then a common telephone network. Connection is carried out using ADSL or Dial-up technology.

ADSL

This connection has the disadvantage of low speed, amounting to tens of megabits per second.

However, it is economically justified when it becomes impractical to run an optical cable over long distances.

To implement this option you need:

  • Telephone cable;
  • Modem;

The splitter ensures simultaneous functioning of the Internet on the PC and phone.

The router and telephone are connected through it, and a signal is sent to the computer through the “LAN” port of the modem.

Dial-Up

This technology has long been outdated, which is characterized by the inconvenience that it is impossible to simultaneously use the telephone and the Internet on a computer.

The transmission speed does not exceed 60 kilobits per second, so you can forget about watching online videos. At such speeds, the user can only surf the Internet and view pictures.

TV cable DOCSIS

Although the Internet speed over such a cable is low (no higher than 300 megabits), it is more convenient for users to pay for the services of one provider for both Internet and television. The signal is transmitted via coaxial cable using DOCSIS technology.

A modem with a built-in network bridge is used, which transmits the signal via a television cable.

The main disadvantage of technology is in use common channel between connected clients, so the speed may fluctuate depending on the line load.

Satellite Internet

It is an expensive type of connection, but it provides access to the network from any remote locality where there is electricity.

Connection equipment also has a high price, but in the absence of alternative sources of Internet access, some users decide to install a special satellite dish with blocks for receiving information transmission.

WiMax and Wi-Fi

Many users use Wi-Fi routers at home. These networks are also common in public places: train stations, cafes, parks, shopping centers, etc.

Telecom operators rarely use this technology due to the small coverage area.

Providers organize Wi-Fi coverage using WiMax technology for large areas, for example, areas of cottage villages.

This technology covers large areas, the radius of which is calculated in kilometers, but for this the operator installs base stations.

The average speed using WiMax technology does not exceed 70 megabits.

The user needs a receiver to connect to such a wireless network, but if it is located at a significant distance from the nearest base station, an additional purchase will be required special antenna to increase signal reception power.

In order to have a wireless connection at home, Wi-Fi network and give Internet access to everyone mobile devices(laptops, tablets, phones, etc.) - you need a router (even many novice users are already aware of this). True, not everyone dares to connect it and configure it themselves...

In fact, most people can do this (I don’t take into account exceptional cases when an Internet provider creates such a “wild” with its own parameters for accessing the Internet...). In this article I will try to answer all the most FAQ that I heard (and hear) when connecting and setting up Wi-Fi router. So let's get started...

1) What router do I need, how to choose it?

Perhaps this is the first question that users who want to organize a wireless Wi-Fi network at home ask themselves. I would start this question with a simple and important point: what services does your Internet provider provide (IP telephony or Internet television), what Internet speed do you expect (5-10-50 Mbit/s?), and at what protocol you are connected to the Internet (for example, now popular: PPTP, PPPoE, L2PT).

2) How to connect the router to the computer?

As a rule, the router itself includes a power supply and network cable to connect to a PC (see Fig. 1).

By the way, please note that on the back wall of the router there are several sockets for connecting a network cable: one WAN port and 4 LAN ( the number of ports depends on the router model. In the most common home routers, the configuration is as in Fig. 2).

The Internet cable from your provider (which was most likely previously connected to the PC’s network card) must be connected to the blue port of the router (WAN).

Using the cable that comes with the router, you need to connect the computer’s network card (where the provider’s Internet cable was previously connected) to one of the router’s LAN ports (see Fig. 2 - yellow ports). By the way, you can connect several more computers this way.

At an important moment! If you don’t have a computer, you can connect the LAN port of the router to a laptop (netbook) with a network cable. The fact is that initial setup It is better (and in some cases, it is impossible to do otherwise) via a wired connection. After specifying all the basic parameters (set up wireless Wi-Fi connection) - then the network cable can be disconnected from the laptop and continue to work via Wi-Fi.

As a rule, there are no issues with connecting cables and power supplies. Let's assume that your device is connected, and the LEDs on it started blinking :).

3) How to enter the router settings?

This is probably the key question of the article. In most cases, this is done quite simply, but sometimes... Let's consider the whole process in order.

By default, each router model has its own address for entering the settings (as well as login and password). In most cases it is the same: http://192.168.1.1/, however, there are exceptions. Here are a few models:

  • Asus - http://192.168.1.1 (Login: admin, Password: admin (or empty field));
  • ZyXEL Keenetic - http://192.168.1.1 (Login: admin, Password: 1234);
  • D-LINK - http://192.168.0.1 (Login: admin, Password: admin);
  • TRENDnet - http://192.168.10.1 (Login: admin, Password: admin).

At an important moment! It is impossible to say with 100% accuracy what address, password and login your device will have (even despite the brands I listed above). But this information must be indicated in the documentation for your router (most likely, on the first or last page of the user manual).

4) How to set up an Internet connection in a Wi-Fi router

Before describing these or those settings, a small footnote should be made here:

  1. First - even routers from one model range may have different firmware ( different versions). The settings menu depends on the firmware, i.e. what you will see when you go to the settings address (192.168.1.1). The settings language also depends on the firmware. In my example below, I will show the settings popular model router - TP-Link TL-WR740N (settings on English language, but understanding them is not so difficult. Of course, it’s even easier to set up in Russian).
  2. The router settings will depend on the network organization of your Internet provider. To configure the router, you need connection information (login, password, IP addresses, connection type, etc.), usually everything you need is contained in the Internet connection agreement.
  3. For the above reasons - it is impossible to give universal instructions, which is suitable for all occasions...

From different Internet providers different type connections, for example, Megaline, ID-Net, TTK, MTS, etc. use a PPPoE connection (I would call it the most popular). In addition, it provides higher speed.

When connecting PPPoE to access the Internet, you need to know the password and login. Sometimes (as for example, MTS) uses PPPoE+Static Local: access to the Internet will be provided, after entering the password and login for access, the local network is configured separately - you will need: IP address, mask, gateway.

Necessary settings (for example PPPoE, see Fig. 4):

  1. You need to open the “Network / WAN” section;
  2. WAN Connection Type - indicate the connection type, in this case PPPoE;
  3. PPPoE Connection: Username - specify the login for accessing the Internet (specified in your agreement with the Internet provider);
  4. PPPoE Connection: Password - password (similar);
  5. Secondary Connection - here we either do not indicate anything (Disabled), or, for example, as in MTS - we indicate Static IP (depending on the organization of your network). Typically, this settings item affects access to the local network of your Internet provider. If you don’t need it, you don’t have to worry too much;
  6. Connect on Demand - establish an Internet connection as needed, for example, if the user accesses an Internet browser and requests a page on the Internet. By the way, please note that there is a column below Max idle Time - this is the time after which the router (if it is idle) will disconnect from the Internet.
  7. Connect Automatically - connect to the Internet automatically. In my opinion, the optimal parameter is what you need to choose...
  8. Connect Manually - connect to the Internet manually (inconvenient...). Although for some users, for example, if traffic is limited, it is quite possible that this type will be the most optimal, allowing them to control the traffic limit and not go into the red.

Another important point - many Internet providers bind your MAC address to the network card and do not allow you to access the Internet if the MAC address has changed ( approx. each network card your unique MAC address).

Modern routers can easily emulate the desired MAC address. To do this you need to open the tab Network/MAC Clone and press the button Clone MAC Address.

Alternatively, you can tell your new MAC address to your Internet provider and they will unblock it.

Note: Actually, after entering the settings and rebooting the router (if you did everything correctly and entered exactly the data that is needed), the Internet should appear in your laptop (computer) that you connected via a network cable! 5) How to set up a wireless Wi-Fi network in a router

Setting up a wireless Wi-Fi network, in most cases, comes down to specifying the network name and password to access it. As an example, I’ll show the same router (though I’ll take Russian firmware to show both Russian and English options).

First you need to open the Wireless section (wireless network), see fig. 8. Next, set the following settings:

  1. Network name - the name that you will see when searching for and connecting to a Wi-Fi network (enter any);
  2. Region - you can specify “Russia”. By the way, many routers don’t even have such a parameter;
  3. Channel Width, Channel- you can leave Auto and not change anything;
  4. Save your settings.

Next, you need to open the “ Wireless Security". Many people underestimate this point, but if you do not protect the network with a password, then all your neighbors will be able to use it, thereby reducing your network speed.

  • Version: you don’t have to change it and leave it automatic;
  • Encryption: also automatic;
  • PSK password is the password to access your Wi-Fi network. I recommend that you indicate something that is difficult to find by regular search, or by random guessing (no 12345678!).

6) How to connect a laptop to a wireless Wi-Fi network

As a rule, if the router is configured correctly, there should be no problems with setting up and accessing the network in Windows. And such a connection is made in a couple of minutes, no more...

Before you start setting up your router, it is advisable to find out necessary information. We need to find out what Internet connection technology our Internet provider uses, we need to have the necessary parameters that will need to be set in the router settings (depending on connection technology). If, for example, the provider uses a connection using Dynamic IP technology, then you do not need any additional parameters. It’s enough to select Dynamic IP in the router settings, and the Internet will work.

You also need to find out whether the provider binds by MAC address. If it does, then after connecting the cable to the router, the Internet will not work even after correct configuration, because the provider does not have the MAC address of the router registered.

Now we will sort everything out in order.

The most important thing is to understand that the task of the router is to connect to the Internet and distribute it to your devices. It establishes a connection to your ISP in the same way as a computer. In order for the router setup to go smoothly and without problems, you need to correctly specify the connection type (WAN Connection Type) and set the necessary parameters.

What happens if you choose the wrong connection type?

This is the most common problem when setting up routers. The Internet will not work. Wireless network will appear, but after connecting to it, there will be no Internet on your devices. On computers, for example, the connection status will be “Without Internet access.” The Internet will also not work via cable from a router.

Everything is clear here, the router did not establish a connection with your provider because the parameters were set incorrectly.

How can I find out the connection technology my provider uses?

In Russia, Ukraine, and probably in other CIS countries, providers most often use the following technologies: Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE, PPTP, L2TP.

  • Dynamic IP– the most normal technology :) . A lot of Internet providers use it. We just connect the cable to the router and the Internet is already working, you don’t need to configure anything. You just need to specify the Dynamic IP technology. But, as a rule, it is set by default in the router settings.
  • Static IP- not a very popular technology. To set up such a connection on your router, you must know the IP address that your Internet provider should give you.
  • PPPoE– a popular technology (in Russia), which requires the creation of a special high-speed connection. If your provider uses PPPoE technology, then you most likely have created such a connection on your computer. In the router settings, you will need to select PPPoE, specify the login and password that your provider gives you. You may also need to set a static IP address.
  • PPTP And L2TP– similar protocols, when setting them up you also need to specify a name and login. And also, the server address and, if necessary, a static IP. If the Internet was previously connected to the computer, then there was a special connection on the computer that you launched.

I have already written a lot, but still haven’t answered the main question.

Before you start setting up your router, be sure to find out what technology your Internet service provider uses.

How to find out? Call your provider's support and ask. Go to the provider's website and find instructions for setting up the equipment there. Or look in the documents you received upon connection.

If you call support, ask also whether the provider binds by MAC address, and what MTU value is best specified in the router settings.

If you already know the connection technology, then you should also know the necessary parameters. If you have a Dynamic IP, then, as I wrote above, no parameters are needed, but if you have, for example, a Static IP, PPPoE, PPTP, or L2TP, then you must know the login, password, static IP (if necessary), server address . Or only certain parameters (it all depends on the connection).

As a rule, this information is specified in the Internet connection agreement.

Is there a binding by MAC address?

Many providers tie the Internet to the MAC address of a specific network device. Each LAN card a computer or router has its own MAC address, and this address is registered with the provider.

If your Internet provider makes such a connection, then even after correctly configuring the router, the Internet will not work. Since most likely, the provider has registered the MAC address of your computer, not the router.

What to do in such a situation?

Find out if binding is done by MAC address. If not, then none additional settings no need to do it. If there is a binding, then in the router settings, you need . It is necessary that the router has the same MAC as the computer to which the Internet is connected. In articles on setting up certain routers, I try to write how to do this.

There is another option: look at the MAC address of the router (usually it is located on a sticker on the router itself), call the support of your Internet provider and tell them the new MAC to which you need to connect the Internet.

The key to successfully setting up a Wi-Fi router:

  • Correctly specify the connection type and correctly set the necessary parameters (these are settings on the “WAN”, “Internet”, “Internet” tabs - different on different routers), which are issued by the Internet provider.
  • Clone the MAC address, or register the MAC address of the router if the provider does the binding.
