    Convenient phone of its time))

    Cheapness; I don't remember anymore

a simple, convenient phone in its class for your money

The model is quite adequate for its price. The sensor responds quickly, the programs do not slow down, the network reception is excellent, the battery lasts well. No frills design - everything you need is included in the set. The pipe is not for 3D games, for a more serious person. Android is an indisputable advantage, I won’t go into detail, everything is clear here.

Pleasant appearance, Build quality (no creaks or play), Compact size, Display that is pleasing to the eye.

Normal phone. Stylish design, loud music. Excellent price. Bought in 2012. For 9000. Wi-fi reception is excellent. Fits in the hand. This is not a Samsung galaxy s 4.

Reliable, has been working for 3 YEARS!!! Reliable case, fell on the asphalt many times, as a result I have several small scratches.

Stylish design, attractive price. Bright display. This is where the advantages end.

It seems to me that the main advantage is the filling that you get for that kind of money! In terms of components, the phone is close to the Galaxy Ace, but the price is very different;). It is assembled soundly, without annoying backlashes. The materials create a pleasant impression, the mechanical buttons work clearly... The sensor is generally worthy of special praise - I have never seen such responsiveness in the budget price category. The screen is clear in almost any lighting conditions, and pixelation is not as annoying as on 240x320 displays. Virtual keyboard convenient even with male fingers, it seems to know exactly where you wanted to press even if you missed a little :) The organizer, as in all Android devices, is very good and convenient. Slim and stylish design - Samsung is at its best here, as always. For those who want some fun

Sometimes glitches (rarely), there is not enough internal memory

    Permanent screenshots on their own;
    -at the beginning of the call, for some time (~20 seconds), the voice is encoded incorrectly: you can only hear some kind of ironic sound without parsing the words;
    - the phone turns on very often during a conversation. Yes, yes, it turns on exactly: you talk and there is silence. You look at the screen and the phone turns on!
    - the battery in high activity mode holds a charge from 100% until shutdown for about 2.5 hours. I charged it in the morning, came to work, talked for 1-1.5 hours, and the phone turned off!

Sometimes the sensor does not respond to touches

The screen fades in the sun to the point that almost nothing is visible.
It takes a very long time to recover from a plane flight (it takes a long time to search for a roaming network - up to 20 minutes)

I can’t say anything good about the battery. It discharges really quickly. It’s an Android. It slows down terribly!!! Many games don’t load! The camera is normal. The cover gets scratched quickly! The cover has a pattern of some dots. There was all the dirt in them. Mine it is white. It would be better to buy black))) You understand, it gets dirty quickly.

Still 180 MB internal memory it won’t be enough, applications such as facebook are especially annoying, they eat up as much as 20 MB of memory, with a basic set of programs (which are written to the phone’s memory and not to SD), the memory often runs out, you have to clear the cache, therefore sometimes some programs cannot be updated, such like google maps, skype, etc. It also happens that there is not enough RAM, it starts to become dull, it can be treated simply by resetting the memory in the task manager.

    1. Periodically loses the network. I still don’t fully understand: the reason is in the device or perhaps in the operator, although the old Samsung worked much more stable.
    2. Brakes... I already suspect that I installed some kind of unsuccessful application, which background It consumes resources so much that sometimes the response takes several seconds after pressing the button, this is very annoying.
    3. Sometimes you can’t write a message, you have to minimize the window and then log in again.
    4. The battery would be a little more powerful.

It discharges very quickly, it can last a maximum of a day. But this is the case with most phones these days.
-Android platform - for some this may be a plus, but for me a phone on such a platform turned out to be very difficult to master.
-Touch keyboard. Virtual keys are so small that it is almost impossible to write an SMS on the go
-Sometimes the phone seems to live its own life: if you want to set an alarm, it goes into your notes, if you want to make a call, it opens an SMS message window. The return button sometimes transforms into screen-taking functions. It's annoying!

Due to the fact that the case is quite thin - the protective touch “glass” (or rather plastic) is very close to the display, therefore excessive pressing on it can irreparably damage the display itself (although over time you get used to the sensitive sensor and stop pressing hard :)). The battery could be stronger, 2 days at medium load and that’s it (buying a reinforced one saves the situation). The video shoots 320x240, I really hope they will fix this defect with the new firmware.

    1) The sensor is very sensitive. After some time, it starts to glitch and can turn pages in a book or turn on applications (it was the sensor glitch that didn’t find any viruses)
    2) The kernel version is prehistoric, so you don’t have to hope that it will work for you good games and you won't need the power that people rave about Gio.
    3) Small amount of built-in memory, only on which applications are installed. To install on a memory card you need to get root rights, so if you need a gaming phone, then save money and buy more powerful android apparatus.
    4) It often lags, let the one who says it’s okay to take something cheap from where it’s not clear, I’ll say right away - I bought it in an elite salon in the city center, the one who says that this phone is super duper doesn’t understand a damn thing about it, or doesn’t

At the time of the start of sales, this device no longer had advanced technical characteristics and was a budget phone built on the Qualcomm QCT MSM7227T platform and running on the Android 2.2.1 Froyo - 2.3.7 Gingerbread operating system.

The date of announcement of the sale of the smartphone falls on the first quarter of 2011, and it began to be sold in Russia and Europe almost simultaneously.

Samsung Gio was positioned by the manufacturer as a replacement touchscreen smartphones Nokia running on Symbian 9.4, as well as an alternative to Symbian Anna and communicators running on windows mobile, the characteristics of which were completely inferior to the new state employee, which ultimately allowed it to win its market share.

Samsung Galaxy Gio has successfully outlived competing devices and has not lost its relevance thanks to the efforts of the authors of unofficial firmware, the latest of which is available on this moment is Android 4.4.4 (KitKat).

Packaging and delivery

The Samsung Galaxy Gio was delivered in a small bright box, which contained a delivery kit containing the accessories necessary to work with the smartphone.

The standard configuration of the model does not include a headset, which is partly compensated by the presence of a 2Gb memory card.

Contents of delivery:

  • Samsung Gio GT-S5660.
  • Battery EB494358VU with a capacity of 1350 mAh.
  • Charger-USB ETA0U10EBECSTD.

  • Memory card 2Gb microSD.
The delivery set is a standard set of budget accessories that do not differ high quality, but have successfully worked for 3 years from the date of purchase of the smartphone.

Design and materials

The device is manufactured in two colors designed for different audiences: white (Silver White) and gray-black (Dark Silver).

Samsung GT-S5660 represents one of the faceless smartphones of the Galaxy series, completely made of a body made of different sizes of plastic.

The build quality of the gadget is high level, which cannot be said about the quality of the materials themselves. The body of the state employee has seriously worn out over the time since the purchase.

Using the device without a case results in rapid appearance minor scratches on the screen and obvious paint coming off on the body.

The only element that resists the rapid loss of its presentable appearance is the back cover of the device, made of corrugated plastic.

The device weighs 102 grams with case dimensions of 110x57x12 mm, which allows you to conveniently use the device with one hand.

The case materials and the transparent protective plastic covering the top of the case do not collect fingerprints and are easy to clean with a regular napkin.

The build quality of the Gio GT-S5660 is not satisfactory. On the front panel of the device there are two touch and one mechanical keys that perform the “call” functions. context menu applications”, “back” and “home”.

On the left, at the end of the device, there is a volume rocker and a place for attaching a strap.

On the right is the card slot microSD memory and a power button.

At the top of the device there is a 3.5 mm jack for connecting headphones, at the bottom there is a microphone hole and a micro-USB connector.

Software

The smartphone initially runs on the Android 2.2.1 Froyo operating system, but is supported by its official update to version 2.3.7 Gingerbread.

Unofficial firmware allow installation on this Android gadget 4.4.4 (KitKat). The device is based on the Qualcomm QCT MSM7227T chipset with clock frequency 800 MHz cores.

The graphic characteristics of the device are represented by the Adreno 200 video accelerator.

Main characteristics of the model:

  • Processor Qualcomm QCT MSM7227T 800 MHz;

Sensors:
  • Approximations;
  • Linear acceleration;
  • Turn;
  • Three-axis accelerometer MBA220.
The technical part allows you to run “light” games on the phone and almost everything available for of this device, software

Screen

The Samsung Galaxy Gio display has a real physical size of 68x45 mm with a TFT-LCD matrix resolution of 320x480 pixels.

The screen transmits up to 16.7 million colors and has low readability in the sun, as well as relatively small viewing angles. The multi-touch display supports two simultaneous touches.

Cameras

A budget camera module with autofocus and a 3.15 MP resolution allows you to take pictures up to 2048x1536 pixels. Video recording is implemented in a resolution of 320x240 pixels and is mediocre.

The device does not have a camera button, so shooting takes place exclusively through the phone software. The Galaxy Gio camera is suitable for photographing documents and ordinary photographs in good lighting conditions.

Sound, player, radio

The device does not use the loudest speaker, but it allows you to listen to music in proper quality.

Using a 3.5 mm jack to connect a headset or headphones solves this problem. The smartphone has Internet and FM radio, which allows you to listen to both online and analogue radio stations.

Samsung Galaxy Gio does not belong to the class of multimedia combines, so its multimedia capabilities correspond to the budget class of devices.

This problem is partially solved through the use of third-party players and high-quality vacuum headphones.

Battery

The EB494358VU battery with a capacity of 1350 mAh used in the smartphone allows you to freely use the device throughout the day.

In everyday use, the device showed acceptable battery life, which can vary greatly depending on the installed software and operating system version.

Internet

The Internet capabilities of the smartphone are well developed and allow you to fully use the device for Internet surfing, correspondence on social networks and viewing streaming video in low resolution.

Conclusion

A budget phone, just a phone, since its main capabilities in the world modern smartphones are pushing Galaxy Gio into the category additional devices.

Using this device as a main smartphone is difficult due to its low hardware qualities.

The device is suitable for schoolchildren, students and other people who do not require their device to follow the trend of increasing MHz(s) and screen resolution.

Thanks to the large number of users this phone Custom firmware for it is still being released, which makes the device relevant as a second device today.

Samsung Galaxy Gio is Samsung's most affordable smartphone to date and takes pride of place in its rich lineup. It was first announced in January 2011. The low price of the device (about $170 at the time of writing) ensured its high popularity both among young people and among lovers of budget, high-performance devices. The S5660 is equipped with an 800 MHz processor and is controlled by operating system Android 2.2. Below are detailed specifications.

Appearance of smartphone, screen

Externally, the device looks like other devices in this line. The same rounded edges and elongated shape. The build quality is 4+, and the plastic used is of pretty good quality. On the back panel you can see a corrugated surface, as well as a camera and speaker.

Video review of Samsung Galaxy Gio

Iron

The Gio has a very good Qualcomm MSM 7227 processor, which operates at 800 MHz by default. This is quite enough to perform the vast majority of tasks, and even allows you to play almost all modern toys. There is 256 MB of RAM, which is actually a kind of standard for devices of this class. But the volume of built-in ROM is quite meager, only 158 MB. But this is not a problem at all, since you can purchase microSD card up to 32 GB and easily store large amounts of music and movies in your smartphone.

Multimedia and camera

The phone has a 3.2-inch display and its resolution is 320x480 pixels. The camera is equipped with autofocus and is capable of taking pictures with a resolution of 2048x1536, which means it has 3.2 million pixels. Video recording is supported at 15 frames per second. And finally, it’s worth mentioning communications. It has everything you need: Wi-fi, Bluetooth, GPS, USB, as well as 3G. In fact, this is the entire necessary set.

Positioning

This spring Samsung company introduced three new relatively inexpensive models based on operating Android systems: Ace, Gio and Fit. The first two have a processor with a clock frequency of 800 MHz and a screen resolution of 320x480 pixels. However, the Ace has a 5-megapixel camera module with autofocus and a large 3.5” display. Samsung Fit boasts the same camera as the Ace, but its processor has a frequency of only 600 MHz, and the resolution is less than the minimum standard for Android - 240x320 pixels. The difference in the price tag between Gio and Fit is small, but, in my opinion, the latter is more elegant.

In this review, we will look at a balanced “mid-ranger” - Samsung Gio.

Design, dimensions, control elements

The phone has small dimensions (110x57x12 mm) and weight (102 g). The front side is made of translucent black plastic, the sides are light gray, the edging around the perimeter is glossy, the back cover is made of corrugated dark gray plastic. The body shape is streamlined, the materials from which the device is made are non-slip and pleasant to the touch, so Galaxy Gio fits perfectly in the hand. And although the screen quickly becomes covered with fingerprints, in general the surface is not easily soiled.

The assembly of the device is perfect thanks to the large number of fasteners on back cover: it does not play, does not creak, does not crunch when squeezed in the hand, and the central area is not pressed through.

The speech speaker and proximity sensor are located at the top of the front panel. The speaker has an average volume, there is practically no headroom, but the interlocutor can be heard clearly. Below the screen there are two touch keys: calling the context menu and “back”. They are illuminated with bright white LEDs. Between them is a large mechanical home button in the form of a rectangle with smoothed edges. It is almost recessed into the body, its stroke is minimal, the pressure is soft, and there is a characteristic “click” sound.

On the left side there is a thin, flat volume rocker key that rises slightly above the body. Just above it is the hole for attaching the strap. On the right side there is a microSD connector with a plastic plug and a small button to turn the device on/off. At the top there is a standard 3.5 mm jack for connecting headphones or a headset, at the bottom there is a microUSB connector and a microphone.

On the back there is a camera lens and two slots where the speaker is hidden.

Display

Unlike the Galaxy Fit, which, oddly enough (considering the lower resolution), has a 3.3" display, the Gio has a 3.2" display (physical size 68x45 mm). Resolution is 320x480 pixels, matrix type is TFT-LCD, displays 16.7 million shades of color, the sensor is made using capacitive technology, supports up to two simultaneous touches (“multi-touch”). The sensitivity is average, there were often misses, that is, the screen did not respond to light touches.

The viewing angles are large; when tilted, the contrast drops slightly, but the colors are not distorted. The brightness is high and can only be adjusted manually, since the phone does not have a light sensor. The proximity sensor is responsible for turning off the backlight during a call; it works correctly and turns off the backlight in time. The device also contains a three-axis accelerometer MBA220, a linear acceleration sensor and a rotation sensor.

In the sun the screen fades completely.

Battery

The Samsung Galaxy S5660 uses a 1350 mAh lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery. Model EB494358VU. The exact same one is available in the Galaxy Ace and Fit. The manufacturer claims that the Galaxy Gio will “live” up to 610 hours in standby mode (2G) and up to 460 hours of 3G network. Talk time - up to 10 hours (2G) and up to 6 hours on a 3G network.

If you use the phone for about 10 hours, the battery will be completely discharged provided: 20-30 minutes of calls per day, 3 hours of using Wi-Fi Internet (Twitter, mail, downloading applications and installing them), about three hours mobile internet, a couple of hours of listening to music. Longer operation can only be achieved by putting less load on the smartphone.

From USB it charges about two and a half hours, from the mains – about 1.5.

Communication capabilities

The phone works in cellular networks 2G (850/900/1800/1900) and 3G (900/2100). HSDPA speed – up to 7.2 Mbit/s. Bluetooth version 2.1 (with A2DP stereo profile) is available for file and voice transfer. There were no problems connecting the headsets: it connected quickly, speech was transmitted clearly.

There is a wireless connection Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n. The device can be used as an access point (Wi-Fi Hotspot). There is a special item in “settings”. During operation, the network did not “fall”.

USB 2.0 is used for file transfer and data synchronization. When Gio is connected to a PC, it is detected as a USB Flash device or USB modem.

Memory and memory card

Jio has 280 MB random access memory, which is sufficient for most tasks. 160 MB of Flash memory is allocated for installing applications (about 120 MB free). If desired, all applications are transferred to microSD; a two-GB memory card is included in the package.

Camera

The Galaxy Ace and Fit have 5-megapixel camera modules, while the Gio has only 3 MP (3.15 MP to be precise). There is autofocus, the speed of which is not amazing: it takes about 3 seconds for the camera to focus on an object. The maximum photo resolution is up to 2048x1536 pixels. I liked their quality: natural colors, clear pictures and wide viewing angles. The only disappointment was the lack of a mechanical button on the side of the phone to activate the shutter.

Videos are recorded in a resolution of 320x240 at 15 frames per second. There’s no point in talking about the quality of the video – it’s unimportant.

The camera is launched through the menu using a shortcut. The interface looks like this: on the left - shooting mode (single shot, smile detection, continuous, panorama), scenes (landscape, night, sports, indoor, beach, sunset, etc.), brightness adjustment, settings. On the right is the gallery, switching from photos to videos.

Photo settings:

  • Focus mode (autofocus, macro)
  • Timer
  • Resolution (320x240, 1280x960, 1600x1200, 2048x1536)
  • Metering (center-weighted, spot metering, matrix)
  • Quality (regular, excellent, best)

Video mode interface: left – recording mode (normal, for MMS), brightness, settings; on the right – switching from video to photo, entering the gallery.

Video settings:

  • Timer
  • Resolution (176x144, 320x240)
  • White balance (auto, daylight, cloudy, incandescent)
  • Effects (no effects, negative, black and white, sepia)
  • Adjust (contrast, saturation, sharpness)

The photo album looks familiar. Almost all Android devices have a 3D gallery installed:

You can get full EXIF information from a photo file:

Video characteristics:

Performance

All three models (Ace, Gio and Fit) are powered by the same Qulacomm MSM7227 chipset. However, the Ace and Gio processor were overclocked from 600 to 800 MHz. However, its architecture (ARMv6) has not changed. Adreno 200 with support for OpenGL ES-CM 1.1 is used as a 3D accelerator. That is, you can play simple games, for example, Angry Birds, but you shouldn’t count on anything more.

The same chipset is used by ZTE Skate, HTC ChaCha, HTC Wilfire S and others. In terms of operating speed, the S5660 is not inferior to the above smartphones. During testing, no abnormal situations arose: reboots, freezes, OS glitches, slowdowns, etc. I would say this - it works “smoothly”.

System information:

Navigation

The smartphone has a GPS navigator. Its functionality is the same as most inexpensive phones. “Cold” start – about 50 seconds, “hot” – up to 6-8 seconds.

Software platform

Jio works for Android versions 2.3.3. However, for this segment of budget mobile phones this is not critical, since 2.3.4 and 2.3.5 will not play any role.

Shell and menu

The familiar TouchWIZ 3.0 shell is present here. There is no point in describing it in detail. But in short: three desktops with widgets, a panel with a “dialer”, “contacts”, “messages” and an entrance to the “menu”. To unlock the screen, you need to press the “menu” button or the device’s power button and then slide your finger across the screen from left to right. You can assign shortcuts, folders, hotkeys and various widgets to desktops. Static and animated screensavers are used as wallpaper. When you hold down the mechanical home button for a long time, a menu appears with previously launched applications. The task manager is also located there.

The menu is represented by 16 icons in a 3x4 grid on one screen. By clicking on the “menu” and selecting “edit” in it, the shortcuts can be moved. Including, they cannot be installed in the bottom panel (“home” panel).

Challenges

The dialer is standard for Samsung phones: large, convenient and functional. From it it is easy to get into contacts and call logs. While dialing a number, a list of contacts starting with these numbers appears in the input field window. To create a contact, you need to click on the “plus” in “contacts”. The following information is available for each subscriber: avatar, first and last name, phone number, email address, Google account Talk, Group, Ringtone, Mailing Address, Organization, Note, Nickname, Website, Birthday and Anniversary.

Messages

There are two types of keyboards used for typing: Samsung, which resembles the iOS keyboard, and Swype. Both seemed to me not very convenient due to the small screen size. In this case, I am a supporter of the resistive type of sensor, since in this case you can at least hit the buttons accurately with a stylus. The phone has an accelerometer, so when you turn the smartphone on its side, the keyboard takes on a landscape view, making it more convenient to enter text.

Applications

To install programs and games, Galaxy Gio has Android Market, and below is a list of applications that are already downloaded to the phone’s memory:

Watch. The screen displays time, date and weather information. From this screen you can switch to an album with photos, music and set an alarm.

Calendar.

Notes.

AllShare. A program for transferring images or music to multimedia devices that support DLNA.

Internet. Regular internet browser.

Market. Google App Store.

Gmail. Email client from Google.

Email. Mail client for different mail services.

Search.

Cards. Google Maps for navigation.

Social Hub. This is a complete solution, integrated as part TouchWiz skins 3.0 on top of the device's operating system. It includes mechanisms for supporting various data submission formats with a special implementation of their submission. The user gets something like this phone book, in which you can add not only a phone number, but also data social network(Facebook, Twitter, MySpace), Email or Internet messenger (ICQ, AOL).

YouTube. Client for watching videos from the site youtube.com.

Google Talk. Chat from Google.

Locator.

Navigation.

Addresses.

News and weather.

My files. This is a file manager. Allows you to copy, cut, delete files and packs.

Calculator.

Samsung Apps . Samsung App Store. Some kind of Android Market.

Dictaphone.

Task Manager. View active and downloaded applications. Allows you to clear memory and remove programs.

Books. Allows you to search and buy books directly from your phone.

Music portal. Searching for music and purchasing it.

A game"Hanger".

Multimedia

Music player

From the main menu, you can organize your tracks by artist, album, and song. When playing a song, the album cover, player control keys, and a button for viewing the list of songs are displayed on the screen. In the settings you can set the sound to 5.1 or select an equalizer. For the latter, 11 presets are available: rock, jazz, classical, dance, pop, live sound, concert hall, wide range, music clarity, bass enhancement and externalization.

The sound volume of the polyphonic speaker is average. Plays cleanly, without overload. The sound quality in the headphones is not bad, but far from ideal: there is a lack of deep low frequencies(40-50 Hz).

FM radio

For it to work, you need to connect headphones, they act as an antenna. The sensitivity of the radio receiver is low. Operating range 85 – 108 MHz, RDS supported. Large numbers of the current frequency appear on the screen, and at the bottom there are four cells of frequently listened to radio stations. In the settings you can configure the radio auto-off timer: from 30 minutes to 2 hours.

Video player

A very simple player with support for H264/H263 codecs and MP4 and 3GP formats. The maximum video resolution is 640x360 pixels with a bitrate of no more than 1200 Kbps in MP4 format. There are no settings, only rewinding videos and “play”/”pause”.

Web browser

Standard web browser. By default it does not support Flash 10.x, since the kernel architecture is ARMv6. You can try to install Adobe Flash, optimized for such chips, however, the surfing speed is sharply reduced and has a negative impact on stability.

Conclusion

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy Gio made a good impression: ergonomic design, high speed work with menus and applications, a good camera and a bright screen. True, he has plenty of competitors...

The Galaxy Fit is also attractive to buyers (even with a 600 MHz processor you can close your eyes), but the resolution is not enough for a 3.3-inch diagonal - pixelation is visible. If this doesn't scare you, then it's a great option.

However, if you choose between Ace, Gio and Fit, then I would give preference to Ace, although it is more expensive (about 10,000 rubles).

By the way, MTS 955 was released in September (a device test is available on our website) - interesting smartphone, considering that it has a large 3.5" display, a high-quality body, a beautiful and functional shell, loud voice and main speakers. Its price is close to the price of Gio (about 7,000 rubles).

The LG Optimus P500 remains in demand. It costs 1,000-1,500 rubles cheaper than the S5660. In this case, you are sacrificing only the processor frequency. But, frankly speaking, the difference in operating speed will be unnoticeable, and if desired, it can be overclocked to the same 800 MHz.

So, Galaxy Gio justifies its “average” status: there are no obvious negative aspects, but nothing outstanding either.
