Smartphones have one or more front cameras of various designs - pop-up camera, rotating camera, cutout or hole in the display, under-display camera

There are not so many tablets with an average price and good performance. If you don’t want to buy products from overtly Chinese brands, pay attention to the Asus Zenpad 8.0 – a good middling product in the world of tablets, with a Snapdragon chip and impressive battery life.

For a tablet, the frames are really thin. But why didn’t they place a second speaker in the lower part of the front panel, where the logo flaunts alone and proudly? The space allows, and the sound quality would improve significantly.

From my own experience, I can say that the volume is enough to watch movies in a quiet room. When the air conditioner is running or the kettle is boiling, you will have to listen.

The headphone output and microUSB port are located on the top edge. The power button is placed clearly in the middle of the right side, and a little higher is the volume rocker.

If you hold the tablet in a vertical orientation, the volume button is under your fingers, and when you turn the tablet in a horizontal orientation to view movies or photos, they are far enough away from the grip area so that you definitely won’t accidentally hit them.

Due to the smoothed corners of the body, Asus Zenpad 8.0 fits comfortably in your hands and does not dig into your palm. The surface of the back panel is made with relief embossing “like leather”, so that the tablet does not slip out of your hands. You can completely forget about prints - the material used does not get dirty at all and is practically not scratched - a week of use did not leave any scratches or abrasions on the lid.

The removable panel does not occupy the entire part of the back surface of the Asus Zenpad 8.0 - this is an original solution by Asus designers with a clutch style. Under the cover there is a slot for a memory card and a SIM card.

Removing the panel is very easy thanks to a small recess in the corner, but putting it back on is difficult; the latches close with obvious force and must be closed in a certain sequence. The main thing is not to panic and not break the lid and your nails, but simply methodically snap the lid around the perimeter.

Display

The display resolution of Asus Zenpad 8.0 is not the highest – 1280×800 pixels. For an 8-inch display, this creates a picture with a pixel density of 189 ppi - a fairly average figure. The brightness of the display is suitable for indoors and outdoors on cloudy days - in the bright sun the surface glares, and the image dims even at maximum brightness. Readability is maintained, but we are not talking about viewing images from a tablet for a long time under the bright sun.

The Asus Zenpad 8.0 is ideal for watching movies or photos - it has the correct color reproduction and color gamut. Additionally, you can manually adjust the display parameters - saturation, color temperature and primary color.

Thanks to the fact that the tablet has IPS matrix, even if you watch a movie with a large group and someone has to look from the side, the picture will be visible clearly and without distortion. Visual Master and Tru2Life image enhancement technologies are used, which make the picture rich and contrasting.

A good oleophobic coating significantly improves the perception of the image on the Asus Zenpad 8.0 screen - due to the fact that the glass does not collect fingerprints, the picture is always pleasingly clear.

Cameras

In our modification of the tablet, the main camera had a 5 megapixel sensor. This is enough for photographs of landscapes on a sunny day or a not very detailed “subject” - a cup of coffee in your favorite cafe or an important announcement.

Interface Asus cameras Zenpad 8.0 is simple and rich in settings and modes - panorama, HDR, smart delete and selfie mode for taking self-portraits with the main camera. There is even a mode for night photography, although even with its help the photos are of dubious quality simply because their resolution is only 1 megapixel.

The front camera here is 2 megapixels and you can only rely on it in good lighting - in a twilight cafe, the photos are far from ideal.

Performance

IN Asus tablet Zenpad 8.0 uses Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor, which provides good performance and multitasking. Of course, about maximum settings We're not talking about graphics in 3D games, but on average the tablet pulls out almost all the toys.

The internal memory in the Asus Zenpad 8.0 is 16 GB, but a little more than 11 GB will be available to you, and this is enough to download three movies in good quality. There will still be room for applications and photos.

Software

The tablet has a custom Zen UI shell installed on top of the operating one. Android systems 5.0. A distinctive feature of this shell is its good customizability - the user is given many parameters of the device’s operation to configure. Moreover, the system is so well optimized that during the entire time I used the tablet I did not experience a single shell glitch.

I liked that the settings menu items are not listed as a list, but are scattered into blocks of two columns. This way you have to scroll through the menu much less, and it’s easier to find the desired item with one quick glance at the screen.

With ZenMotion, you can quickly launch apps on your tablet from a locked state. To do this, just draw a certain letter on the switched off screen - and it will start. the right application. There are a total of 6 letter options and a wide selection of applications.

Battery

Due to the fact that the display resolution was not increased, Asus Zenpad 8.0 can easily withstand long loads, economically using a 4000 mAh battery. It lasts for about 6 hours of video playback - that is, about three films.

In synthetic tests, the battery life is even better - the tablet lasted 9 and a half hours in the PC Mark battery life test, while other smartphones and tablets generally stay at 5-6 hours.

But if this is not enough for you, you can connect the external battery case Power Case, which comes with the tablet. Unlike an external power bank, it is not connected by wires, but is placed instead back cover. The only inconvenience with this is that the tablet noticeably adds weight and thickness.

Today we are introducing Asus Zenpad 8.0. So, this tablet from a renowned manufacturer has a 4 core processor and 2 GB random access memory, it is this configuration that allows the user to run a huge number of applications, including most games. The amount of internal memory is 16 GB (can be configured with 32 GB and 64 GB), this will be quite enough for the vast majority of buyers. Regarding the screen, it adequately conveys the color gamut and also has a good brightness margin. It’s worth saying a few words about the sound, and so, it’s pretty good, both in headphones and from speakers, so that this device is perfect for music lovers. One of the disadvantages is the fact that on sale there may be devices with screen glare.

In general, Asus Zenpad 8.0 is a fairly multifunctional device that will be of great interest to the user.

ASUS ZenPad 8.0 Z380KL | Design and appearance

The tablet comes in a small white box with a flip-top lid.

Contents of delivery:

  • ASUS ZenPad 8.0 Z380KL tablet
  • USB-Micro-USB cable
  • Charger
  • User guide
  • Warranty card

ASUS ZenPad 8.0 Z380KL is available in three colors - white, gray and black. In our case, the tablet was gray, however, it differs from white only in the color of the back cover.

The front of the tablet looks quite noticeable - white plastic, glass, silver edge, speaker and ASUS logo. As standard, a film with the features of the device is glued to the screen. Above the screen is the front camera.

On the back panel there is a rear camera, a removable cover made of embossed plastic (convenient - does not slip out), on which there is a silver company logo. Under the cover there are slots for SIM cards and Micro-SD. On the white part you can see the inscription ASUS ZenPad.

On the right side there is a power button, a volume rocker, and a recess for removing the cover. At the bottom there is a microphone, at the top there is a micro-USB connector, a headphone input, in which there is another microphone (for noise reduction - it picks up environmental noise and “cleanses” the main sound). The left panel is not occupied.

ASUS ZenPad 8.0 looks stylish. Overall the build is good.

ASUS ZenPad 8.0 Z380KL | Screen

The tablet screen is protected by Gorilla Glass1 coating – not a single scratch appeared on it during testing. On the back, due to the texture of the plastic, scratches will not be noticeable even if they appear. The display is very easily soiled (although an oleophobic coating was promised) and smooth – it’s a pleasure to work with.

In general, the manufacturer has successfully worked on image quality; ASUS ZenPad 8.0 Z380KL is based on ASUS VisualMaster - a complex of exclusive hardware and software technologies that help improve image quality:

ASUS Tru2Life - automatically changes the contrast and sharpness of the picture to increase the range of displayed colors; thanks to the detail, the image looks more realistic;

Tru2Life Plus is a technology that improves the reproduction of dynamic scenes in videos by increasing the screen refresh rate;

TruVivid is a display manufacturing method that reduces the number of layers of different materials from four to two - improving screen brightness and making the touch interface more responsive. You can bring the ASUS ZenPad 8.0 into the active state not only with the power button, but also with certain gestures;

Blue light filtering minimizes the intensity of the screen's radiation in the appropriate range, reducing eye fatigue without affecting the accuracy of other colors.

ZenPad's Splendid technology allows you to change display settings to get the best possible picture.

The brightness of the screen changes automatically - the lighting is selected quite accurately, which is convenient, but, if desired, the backlight can be adjusted manually.

The viewing angle is wide (178°), which is not surprising given the IPS matrix.

In general, although the number of pixels per inch is small (189 dpi), and the resolution is not the best (1280x800), many exclusive technologies and automatically adjusting functions allow you to comfortably work with both multimedia applications and the ASUS ZenPad 8.0 in general.

ASUS ZenPad 8.0 Z380KL | Software

Installed on the tablet relatively latest version Android 5.0.2 (Lollipop).

The tablet has a proprietary user interface, ZenUI, designed specifically for ASUS mobile devices. It allows you to launch apps from a powered-off tablet using simple gestures like double-tapping or drawing an “S” on the screen. 100 GB of Google Drive storage is also provided free of charge for two years.

ASUS ZenPad 8.0 comes preloaded with quite a few applications, many of which are developed by ASUS. From Play Market you can install the remaining necessary ones.

Settings

The settings look rather unusual - they are located in two columns, so at first it may not be very convenient to navigate them.

Of the items different from the standard ones, only ZenMotion is worth mentioning - setting up activating gestures, individual ASUS settings ASUS Cover.

Browser

Three browsers are offered at once - standard, Chrome and Puffin Free. Working with them is quite comfortable - partially supported Adobe Flash Player, the video can be watched directly in the browser, although standard browser and Puffin slow down a bit. Data synchronization can be done via account Google, which is very convenient.

Google search is called up by long pressing on “Home”, which, as practice shows, is very convenient.

Music

To listen to music, the standard “Music” application is installed, which searches for audio recordings throughout the device and with which you can sort tracks. Of course, you can use the player that you like.

The sound is good and quite loud. The speaker is relatively large, it is located on the front side, which is convenient when watching movies. True, since there is only one speaker, the main volume of sound falls on one ear, which is not very pleasant. Also, when listening to music, you no longer need to place the device on the screen so that the sound is clearer (the screen is very slippery - at the slightest angle of inclination it can “move” off the plane).

Video

We tested support for ASUS ZenPad 8.0 video formats using the Antutu Video Tester program. The results are shown below:

Not to say that the tablet completely coped with this test (the screen resolution makes itself felt, not all 1080p formats are supported), but the supported formats are displayed with good quality. If you need support for additional formats, it makes sense to install an alternative player.

ASUS ZenPad 8.0 Z380KL | Camera

The tablet is equipped with rear (5 MP) and front (2 MP) cameras with autofocus, but without flash.

The camera is equipped with PixelMaster technology, which allows you to take high-quality images in high resolution. The front camera is based on a wide-angle (75°) lens and f/2.0 aperture, it is possible to shoot 140-degree panoramas. There's also some serious light manipulation going on while shooting - in low-light mode, the camera resizes the image sensor's pixels to increase light sensitivity by 400% to increase contrast and reduce noise. Sensitivity can also be adjusted manually.

It is also suggested to “become more glamorous” - in portrait mode (front camera) you can edit your face in real time - for example, make “thin cheeks” or “big eyes”, remove skin defects (all on a 10-point scale).

The camera has zero shutter lag, meaning it allows you to take a photo without the slightest delay. True, you can take photographs in some modes only when the previous photo has loaded - and this takes up to two seconds. Almost everything can be customized.

Below is a photo from the rear camera:

From the front:

In general, the quality of the images is good, and the different modes only add to the possibilities. ASUS ZenPad 8.0 has no problems with this.

ASUS ZenPad 8.0 Z380KL | Performance

Overall system performance

We used Smartbench 2012 1.0 to evaluate overall system performance. This test is very similar to the 3DMark and SysMark suites in that it provides simple and easy-to-use performance indexes for two categories: productivity applications and games. On the other hand, a synthetic test may not accurately reflect the actual performance of applications and games.

ASUS ZenPad 8.0 holds up at an excellent level - its performance is higher than that of previous generations of tablets.

Java Script Performance

SunSpider is a JavaScript benchmark that demonstrates both the performance of the tablet's JavaScript engine and (to a lesser extent) the processing power of the hardware. A poor implementation of JavaScript on a very fast tablet can ruin the overall performance of the platform. And at the same time, an excellent implementation of JavaScript will allow you to effectively use even slow systems. However, today the main implementations of JavaScript engines are becoming closer to each other, and developers are borrowing all the best ideas. JavaScript tests are single threaded due to the nature of browsers. SunSpider correctly evaluates CPU-sensitive tasks found in real web applications.

The smaller the result, the better. It can be seen that the tablet is not doing well with this section - it will slow down when loading “heavy” pages.

AnTuTu

I coped well with this test - good results for its price category.

3D Mark

The result is quite good. Below we will evaluate performance in real gaming tests.

Relative Benchmark

This test was created “for growth”; no available devices on the market have really high results. Android based They can’t show it. The graphics level is much higher than the average gaming one, so even if the results here are not impressive, real games the results can be quite good. 60 fps in this test is already Xbox 360.

The result is higher than that of previous generations of tablets.

Network Bandwidth

We tested network performance using the IxChariot test, as well as an 802.11 b/g/n router with 1 Gbps ports. The tablet was located about 1 meter from the access point. We tested the maximum available network mode (802.11g or 802.11n), at this time there were no other active transmissions, and no pronounced interference was detected in the network coverage area.

The network bandwidth of ASUS ZenPad 8.0 is high level and will not become a bottleneck, for example, when watching movies and videos on the Internet.

ASUS ZenPad 8.0 Z380KL | Game tests

We have added the Epic Citadel gaming test, which is a demonstration of the capabilities of the Unreal engine from Infinity Blade for Android OS. The test was carried out in High Quality mode. We excluded the High Performance mode from the tests, since the results differ slightly, and we are interested in the performance of the smartphone relative to other models. You can see the results below.

ASUS ZenPad 8.0 Z380KL | Time battery life

We tested the tablet for battery life in different usage scenarios. We tried to bring testing conditions as close as possible to real ones. The brightness was set at a level that we think is optimal for working in a well-lit room. In gaming mode, sound was output through the speaker and Wi-Fi was turned off. The reading also took place without Wi-Fi. In the Movies mode, we watched a movie online in 720p quality using headphones.

The tablet performed quite well in this test. It is noteworthy that with a prolonged set of identical actions, the tablet itself calculates “how much is left” - this can be seen in Settings - Battery; when charging, the information is displayed on the main screen.

ASUS ZenPad 8.0 Z380KL | Conclusion

The tablet is perfect for multimedia scenarios (watching movies, photos), reading, surfing. We are pleased with the built-in 3G/4G support, which will allow you to always stay connected. Unfortunately, the screen resolution is inferior to high-end 8-inch models on the market, and the hardware is not the most powerful. But the tablet copes with games (except for the most “heavy” ones). Spending time with the ASUS ZenPad 8.0 Z380KL while traveling and doing daily errands was quite enjoyable. And the tablet fully justifies its price.

You can buy ASUS ZenPad 8.0 Z380KL for about 13 thousand rubles.

Advantages of ASUS ZenPad 8.0 Z380KL:

  • Embossed back cover
  • High quality IPS screen
  • Long battery life
  • High quality build
  • 4G/3G support

Disadvantages of ASUS ZenPad 8.0 Z380KL:

  • Weak support for video formats by the standard player
