Features of Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge

The hardware of the Galaxy S7 Edge is practically no different from the base model. But, thanks to the increased size, the product can be taken beyond the concept of “smartphone” and entered into the “phablet” category. Of all the available characteristics, in addition to the increased size of the case, three points should be especially noted:

1. Enlarged display up to 5.5 inches diagonal. At the same time, the resolution remained the same, which, accordingly, affected such an indicator as PPI (pixel density per inch), which changed downward from 577 to 534.
2. Rechargeable battery capacity of 3600 mAh, which is 20% more than the base model (charging 100 minutes, including wireless).

The day before the opening of MWC 2016, Samsung officially presented two of its newest flagship– Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. Both of these smartphones show an evolution from their predecessors, and our first impressions of them are generally positive.

Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are made of aluminum and have protective glass Gorilla Glass 4 on both sides of the cases. Plus, they have the same sensors and keys, both of these devices are waterproof and support microSD cards. Two significant differences between the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are size and display.

The Galaxy S7 Edge has a 5.5-inch curved display, while the Galaxy S7 has a 5.1-inch flat display. Despite the fact that the S7 Edge is larger than its “brother,” they feel almost the same in the hands.

The S7 Edge should appeal to those who prefer larger screens, although the design differences between these smartphones cannot be attributed solely to aesthetics. The S7 Edge's larger body and curved display also have other features (such as a larger battery).

Display

Both smartphones in question have QHD Super AMOLED displays, and the difference in contrast and brightness is almost minimal. The main difference is the set of functions.

Galaxy S7 display works like a normal one touch screen, with good response, bright and rich colors. The Galaxy S7 Edge has a similar display to the S7, but its curved display gives it added functionality.

The sloping edges of the Galaxy S7 Edge display can be used to open shortcuts to your favorite apps and contacts, or display news, weather forecast, etc. This time, the display of this smartphone has two active columns instead of one, to display more information.

If you look at the displays of these devices with a more critical eye, it may seem that the S7 Edge's screen is slightly better - due to size and functionality, but mainly due to viewing media content and entering characters. However, curved display edges tend to reflect more light towards the user, a situation that many of us may not like.

Software

Both Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge received Android version 6.0.1 Marshmallow, working in tandem with the proprietary TouchWiz interface. In principle, this interface is not too different from previous versions TouchWiz based Android Lollipop, although the functionality of the S7 Edge's screen side panels has been improved. The available version of TouchWiz contains a number of pre-installed applications (about 25), but, with the exception of the additional functions of the side panels of the curved display, the software of the devices in question is the same.

Battery

The battery can be considered another significant difference between the S7 and S7 Edge. The battery capacity of the first smartphone is 3000 mAh, the second – 3600 mAh. In our opinion, that extra 20 percent of battery capacity might not necessarily mean an extra 20 percent increase in battery life, but given that the S7 Edge only has a slightly larger display, it could improve battery life in standby mode. We'll have to wait for these two smartphones to arrive at our home so we can conduct more thorough tests to determine the health of their batteries.

Camera

The camera technologies in the S7 and S7 Edge are almost identical. It's worth noting that they have been improved over the Galaxy S6, and now the cameras on these smartphones can take better pictures in low light conditions, thanks to dual pixel technology similar to that found in DSLR cameras.

Both devices in question received a 12-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front camera, with the same f/1.7 aperture. In our opinion, the Galaxy S6 Edge+ has one of the best cameras among Android devices, and some signs indicate that the S7 series models will be even better.

Performance

S7 and S7 Edge may demonstrate the same internal hardware: Exynos 8890 or Snapdragon 820 chipset (depending on the sales market) and 4 GB random access memory. All of this combines to ensure excellent performance, and the S7 Edge's slightly larger display is unlikely to have a noticeable negative impact on performance.

Price

Without a doubt, the Galaxy S7 Edge will be more expensive than its Galaxy S7 sibling. We think the price difference will be around $50-$100, which is significant, but not surprising since the S7 Edge has more advanced features.

Conclusion

Will these additional features bring something special to the next generation of the Galaxy S line? It is still difficult to answer this question. So far, we only know that Samsung did not let its fans down in terms of hardware for the heroes of our review, and we expect that consumers will be happy with each of these smartphones.

What are your first impressions of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge? Tell us about it in the comments.

The Koreans launched two hot new products onto the market at exactly the same time. While it has compact dimensions and high performance, with its rounded screen edges looks more innovative. We compared these two smartphones to find out which of them has a better chance of taking first place in our ranking. We will briefly talk about a couple of features below, and then in the table we will present a more detailed contrast.

The main difference is the displays

If you compare these two top-level devices, the first thing that catches your eye is the difference in screen size. While the S7 will launch with a 5.1-inch QHD display, Samsung has equipped the Edge variant with a 5.5-inch QHD display with curved edges. So the resolution and OLED technology are identical, but the S7 Edge has better viewing angle stability than its predecessor.

The S7 Edge has more battery capacity

A larger screen requires more power. The engineers of the Korean company took this into account. While the Galaxy S7 makes do with a 3,000mAh battery, the S7 Edge packs a whopping 3,600mAh. Therefore, during the duration test battery life S7 Edge should not make a mistake. How long big smartphone will last in web surfing mode, will show the corresponding test, which will soon appear on the site. One thing is already clear: both S7 models have improved batteries compared to their predecessors.

Comparison of two flagships of one Samsung Galaxy S7 vs Galaxy S7 Edge may seem ridiculous at first glance, but it will be very interesting.

In terms of electronic “filling”, the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge are very similar: the same processor, memory capacity, main and front camera, a set of sensors, communication capabilities. These are actually “two brothers”, but not twins.

However, if we talk about the differences, then comparatively the Galaxy S7 vs Galaxy S7 Edge differs much more than last year's Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, whose main and almost only difference was the presence of a conceptual screen with rounded side edges.

As for the new products, the basic Samsung Galaxy S7, unlike the Galaxy S7 Edge, has a “classic” screen diagonal for the Galaxy S line of 5.1 inches with a QHD resolution of 1440 x 2560 (the pixel density is quite high - about 577 ppi).

The Galaxy S7 Edge this time was released in phablet format (5.5-inch screen diagonal with QHD resolution) and inherits not so much from the Galaxy S6 Edge as from the Galaxy S6 Edge+. Apparently, Samsung analyzed the sales experience for 2015 and made the new “sevens” multi-niche.

Also, the Samsung Galaxy S7 differs from the Galaxy S7 Edge in having a less capacious battery – 3000 mAh versus 3600 mAh.

Actually, this is where the technical differences between the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge end. However, there is another interesting point: despite the fact that options for 64 GB of built-in flash memory will soon be available for both variants of the “seven”, the Galaxy S7 64 GB and Galaxy S7 Edge 64 GB will be presented in different countries the world unevenly.

Samsung Galaxy S7 vs Galaxy S7 Edge: what to choose in the end?

Due to the fact that the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge belong to different market niches, the main choice factor will not be the characteristics, but the cost and size of the smartphones. For now official price The Galaxy S7 costs 49,990 rubles in Russia, the Galaxy S7 Edge costs 59,990 rubles.

Curved samsung screen The Galaxy S7 Edge is more of an image feature; it offers few practical advantages. However, for some, the desire to really stand out will be the deciding factor.

If you have a craving for “classics”, then your choice will be the Galaxy S7, and if you are not afraid of “shovel phones” and a capacious battery and big screen, then take the Galaxy S7 Edge.
