If you turn on the display of the favorites panel, a place will appear under the main work panel where you can add links to your favorite sites. This is done by clicking on "Star" V address bar.

Importing bookmarks from another browser

This function will come in handy if you have previously used another browser and have accumulated a lot of necessary bookmarks there. They can be imported into Edge by clicking the appropriate settings item.

Here, mark your previous browser and click "Import".

After a few seconds, all your previously saved bookmarks will move to Edge.

Advice: if old browser is not displayed in the list, try transferring its data to Internet Explorer, and you can already import everything from it to Microsoft Edge.

Start page and new tabs

The next point is the block "To open with". In it you can mark what will be displayed when you enter the browser, namely:

  • home page – only the search bar will be displayed;
  • new tab page – its contents will depend on the tab display settings (next block);
  • previous pages – tabs from the previous session will open;
  • specific page – you can specify its address yourself.

When you open a new tab, you may see the following content:

  • blank page with search bar;
  • the best sites are those that you visit most often;
  • best sites and suggested content - in addition to your favorite sites, popular ones in your country will be displayed.

Below this block there is a button to clear browser data. Remember to do this procedure periodically to keep Edge from losing performance.

This mode is activated by clicking on the icon "Book" in the address bar. When activated, the content of the article opens in an easy-to-read format without site navigation elements.

In the settings block "Reading" You can set the background style and font size for the specified mode. For convenience, turn it on to see changes immediately.

Additional Microsoft Edge browser options

Useful little things

Here you can enable the display of the home page button, and also enter the address of this page.

It further offers the option to use a pop-up blocker and Adobe Flash Player. Without the latter, some sites may not display all elements and video may not work. You can also activate the keyboard navigation mode, which allows you to navigate around the web page using the keyboard.

Privacy and Security

In this block you can manage the function of saving passwords entered into data forms and the ability to send requests "Do Not Track". The latter means that sites will receive a request asking them not to track your actions.

Below you can define a new search service and enable search query suggestions as you type.

The option to save licenses of protected files on your PC can be disabled, because in most cases this option only clogs HDD unnecessary trash.

The page prediction feature involves sending data about user behavior to Microsoft so that the browser can predict your actions in the future, for example, by loading the page you are about to go to in advance. Whether it is necessary or not is up to you to decide.

SmartScreen is similar to a firewall that prevents unsafe web pages from loading. In principle, if you have an antivirus installed with this function, then SmartScreen can be disabled.

The choice of browser is extremely important, because the experience of using the Internet largely depends on it. And, in addition to many solutions on the market that come separately, there is also the Microsoft Edge browser that comes with Windows 10. Below we will look at the features of setting up the application, how to install it correctly and how to uninstall it.

What is Microsoft Age

Microsoft Edge is new browser Microsoft company, created to replace the outdated Internet Explorer. The name change also has advertising value - many users ignored the release of new versions of Internet Explorer, having had bad experiences with this browser in the past. Thus, Microsoft Edge is presented as a completely new solution for working on the network.

Application Features

Although this browser is a successor to Internet Explorer, it still has a number of significant differences from it. For example:

  • Own, more flexible engine.
  • Extension support.
  • More convenient use on mobile devices, use of a stylus and voice assistant.
  • Quite fast search in real time.

Convenience and flexibility with overall stability make Microsoft Edge much more profitable than its predecessor.

How to install

On Windows 10, the Microsoft Edge browser is installed by default. So when using this operating system his separate installation not required.

Although Microsoft Edge is installed by default in Windows 10, the OS also comes with Internet Explorer installed. This was done to ensure backward compatibility with existing systems.

However, if Microsoft Edge won't launch on your Windows 10, you can fix it by resetting the settings to default. To do this we do the following:

  1. Enter the inetcpl.cpl command into the Run window (opened by pressing Win+R). Then confirm the command.
  2. A window will appear in which you will need to go to the “Advanced” section.
  3. There you need to select reset Internet settings Explorer. Don’t be surprised that this particular browser name appears in this window; the same option resets the settings for Microsoft Edge.
  4. Confirm the reset, accepting the options offered.
  5. Try launching your browser again, it should now launch without problems.

And it’s also worth considering that Microsoft Edge does not work when the Windows Firewall is disabled.

If you have a different operating system, for example, Windows 7 or Windows 8, then you will not be able to install and fully use the Microsoft Edge browser. The only option for using this browser in this case is to create virtual machine. This option is most likely not rational, but if so, you can easily find all the necessary instructions on the official Microsoft website: https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/tools/vms/.

If you fundamentally do not want to use another browser, then you can always upgrade your operating system to Windows 10.

New Windows browser Microsoft's 10 is called Edge. Formerly known as Project Spartan, the name change allows Microsoft to retain the iconic E from Internet Explorer and thereby maintain brand equity. The Edge browser made its debut in Windows Build 10158 and will now come pre-installed with Windows 10. Wondering what's new in it, and how you can transfer your favorites and bookmarks, or customize settings? We'll show you how.
Please note that if you are using Spartan and have upgraded to EDGE then you will need to do backup- Favorites, cookies, history and value of list items saved in Spartan, as they will not be transferred to EDGE. How to do it -

Copy favorites from:
%localappdata%/Packages/Microsoft.Windows.Spartan_cw5n1h2txyewy/AC/Spartan/User/Default/Favorites
Save them in the %userprofile%\Favorites folder.

After updating to the latest build, open the Microsoft Edge browser, select options, and you will see an option that allows you to import favorites from another browser. Select your internet browser to import your saved favorites into the %userprofile% Directory folder in Microsoft Edge.

Why switch to Edge?

Microsoft Edge is a stylish and responsive browser that supports HTML5 and all the details with legacy technologies like ActiveX and Silverlight. It can be a great replacement for IE, although legacy sites that rely on unsupported technologies can still be viewed in IE 11 on Windows 10.

The EDGE browser promises to be faster, more reliable, and more modern than Internet Explorer. On this moment, although we can't seriously recommend that you switch to a new browser if you prefer other browsers with minimal features. In this case, EDGE should be your first choice.

Import favorites/bookmarks

If you upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7 or 8.1, most of your software will be transferred, including your browser. Favorites from Internet Explorer and bookmarks from Chrome or Firefox will be easily imported into Edge.

In the top right corner, click on the three dots menu, then go to Settings > Import favorites from another browser, select the browser you want to import from, and click on the Import button. If you use multiple profiles in Chrome, only the bookmarks of your main profile will be imported.

Edge Browser - Import Favorites

From the menu shown above, you can also turn your favorites bar on or off.

If you decide to do new installation or buy a new device with pre-installation installed Windows 10, then you can export your bookmarks from the old browser to an HTML file, then import it into the same browser in Windows 10, and then follow the procedure described above. In Internet Explorer, copy the Favorites folder to the Favorites folder in Windows 10.

In Insider Preview Build 10158, EDGE favorites are stored here:

C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_xxx\AC\MicrosoftEdge\User\Default\Favorites

We will not be able to manually add new bookmarks through this folder. While you can delete items from a folder that will subsequently disappear in the Edge Browser, the added entries will not appear in it. EDGE doesn't offer an option to manually import an HTML bookmark file. We expect that EDGE may take over the main favorites folder when this bug is fixed in Windows 10.

Setting a custom home or start page

Internet Explorer can be started with more than one home page and Microsoft Edge offers the same features.

Return to menu settings and under open select required parameters page, New Tab page, previous pages, or a specific page or pages. When you go to the last option and select Custom, you can add multiple pages that will open when you open the Edge browser.

Set up your top sites

As in Chrome and Firefox, also in EDGE you can fill the new tab page with content.

New tab in Edge

Under Settings > Open a new tab, you can choose to show a blank page, or your top sites, or top sites and suggested content. The same settings can be made directly from the Settings menu, except that the “suggested content” is called “My News”.

Bookmarks in Edge

You can remove pages from the list of top sites, but even in Settings you can't manually add new ones if you don't visit them often.

Add Home button

By default, the Edge browser does not include a home button. This feature can be enabled via Settings > Show additional settings(button below) > Show Home button.

You can see the Home button in the screenshots above and below.

Change default search engine

The default search engine in Edge is, of course, Bing. Under Advanced Options, you can choose a different search engine to search in the address bar. When we chose the option<добавить новый>, we can only search bing.

Microsoft explains that “only searching vendors that support the opensearch standard will appear in this list.” New options appear when you visit search engines, which support the opensearch standard, such as duckduckgo and github or Wikipedia. Apparently this does not apply to Google.

As mentioned in the previous post, you must enable the send and do not track requests feature in the advanced settings, which is turned off by default.

Using keyboard shortcuts

Keyboard shortcuts can help you browse and work more efficiently with your new browser. The following keyboard shortcut is supported in the Microsoft Edge browser:

Keyboard shortcut Ctrl + / accesses the omnibar, but we were unable to reproduce this functionality.

Keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Enter— fills in the site address with http:// and .com protocol if you just enter a name, for example, MakeUseOf.

Shift + Enter- adds .NET.

Keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + Enter - fills in addresses.org.

Keyboard shortcut Ctrl + 1 jumps to the first tab, Ctrl + 2 to the second, and so on.

Keyboard shortcut Ctrl+G and opens his reading list.

Keyboard shortcut Ctrl+H opens the story.

Keyboard shortcut Ctrl + I opens favorites.

Keyboard shortcut Ctrl+D will allow you to add a new site to your favorites.

Keyboard shortcut Ctrl+J and your popularity will open.

The Ctrl+K shortcut cannot be cloned in the current tab.

Keyboard shortcut Ctrl + T opens a new tab.

Keyboard shortcut Ctrl + N opens a new window.

And many other shortcuts are exactly what you know in other browsers.

Additional features

The new Edge browser will include a sync feature similar to Chrome and Firefox that will create backups bookmarks, passwords, history and tabs (we assume) for account onedrive.

At the moment, the Edge browser does not support extensions. Developers will be able to import extensions from Chrome to Edge with minor changes.

What do you think of Microsoft's new Edge browser? Is this good progress for Internet Explorer and can compete with Chrome and Firefox? Will you try to install it and get it working?
