A device for small workgroups with two network interfaces and a USB connection

You won’t envy manufacturers’ marketers who compile brief descriptions of models: characterizing devices that are close to model range firms, they have to use definitions with subtle nuances. Thus, the Xerox WorkCentre 3325 MFP that we have already reviewed was intended for “small and medium-sized groups,” and the device that we will test today solves the printing problems facing “small workgroups.” The difference is very relative, so let’s clarify: the main difference in terms of characteristics is a slightly lower printing speed and a significantly lower maximum monthly operating time. There is a difference in equipment and, of course, in price.

Let's talk about MFPs Xerox WorkCentre 3225DNI, which replaced the earlier WC3220 model. The equipment is clear from the last three letters in the index: D - duplex (automatic two-sided printing device), N - Ethernet network interface, I - Wi-Fi wireless interface. The user manual also mentions the WC3225DN option (that is, without Wi-Fi), as well as a slightly less productive version of the WC3215NI, which lacks duplex. There is also a similar printer based on the same mechanism, only without a scanner; it's called the Phaser 3260 and is offered in two versions: 3260DI with duplex and wireless interface, as well as 3260DNI, which, as you might guess, also has a network Ethernet adapter. For the WC3215 MFP, the analogue is the Phaser 3052 printer, and all of these devices have the same consumables.

Full specifications of Xerox WC3225DNI

The new printer must include:

  • toner cartridge (for 1500 prints),
  • print cartridge (for 10,000 prints),
  • CDs with documentation and software,
  • USB cable,
  • telephone cable,
  • power cable.

LAN patch cord must be purchased separately.

Consumables common to the WC3215, 3225 MFP series and Phaser 3052, 3260 printers:

  • standard capacity toner cartridge for 3000 prints 106R02778, packaged weight 0.73 kg;
  • 6,000 print high capacity toner cartridges 106R02782 (double pack), 1.43 kg;
  • Drum Cartridge for 10,000 prints 101R00474, packaged weight 0.726 kg.

Toner cartridge operating hours are based on ISO/IEC 19752 standard and drum cartridge operating hours are based on an average print job of 3 pages.

There may be toner cartridges with other numbers on sale - 106R02775, 106R02777, but they are not intended for Russian market and are not officially supplied to Russia.

There are no options, including additional feed trays, for this machine.

In terms of information support, the complaints are the most general, common to almost all manufacturers: in order to get a full set of MFP parameters (for example, we needed this to fill out a full table of characteristics), we have to use several sources - website pages, information brochures, instructions. In addition, sometimes there are discrepancies: for example, the user manual talks about the Ethernet 10/100/1000 network interface, while all other sources talk about Ethernet 10/100.

It is gratifying that for Russian consumers there is a section of the official website in Russian, there are Russified drivers and documentation for users. In a relationship specific model There is, perhaps, only one remark: on the page of the Russian-language section of the site dedicated to the WorkCentre 3225, there is no information about consumables, and you have to visit the English-language one.

And one more complaint that we have already expressed: to download documentation and drivers, the Russian-language section refers to the international Xerox website and gives lengthy but banal explanations on how to look for information on your model there. Wouldn't it be easier to just redirect? And for those who are not familiar with English at all, it was possible to make a full translation for the software downloads section.

Appearance, control panel, design features

The design style and color scheme of the MFP are quite familiar from other examples of modern Xerox technology. The device is quite compact, its dimensions are 401 × 363 × 365 mm, and quite light: the net weight is only slightly more than 11 kg, and when packaged it cannot be called heavy - the box with the MFP weighs 14 kg.

There is nothing unusual in the configuration: as in other devices of this class, paper is fed transversely relative to the front plane, and the scanner is located longitudinally. The receiving tray is located in the niche between the printing unit and the scanner.

The control panel is located on the protruding, slightly angled part of the scanner. Various buttons are evenly distributed throughout its area, the most commonly used of which are “Start”, “Stop” and “Reset” - highlighted in color and placed on the right side of the panel.

Pressing the buttons does not require excessive effort and is processed clearly; they themselves are convex and protrude slightly from the plane of the panel, so working with them does not cause any unpleasant sensations.

The display is quite simple: a two-line monochrome LCD screen, very similar to those found on Panasonic's popular low-cost telefaxes. The disadvantages of such displays are known: low resolution, due to which the displayed characters consist of clearly visible dots, small viewing angles vertically and horizontally.

There are also few characters, 16 in each of two lines, so a number of messages or menu items are presented in an abbreviated form, and the abbreviations used are not always immediately clear, and sometimes are not clear at all, especially when using the Russian language, and you have to refer to the instructions. Sometimes some characters are replaced with a question mark:

But in general, we have no serious complaints about Russification, and with regard to some of the noted shortcomings, we hope that they will be corrected in future firmware versions.

The tilt of the control panel is designed for the case when the operator stands next to the MFP, not only closely, but also at a distance of half a step, then the information on the indicator is readable quite normally. In addition, the symbols are large enough that a person with not very good eyesight will not have to strain. But you won’t be able to work while sitting: due to the small viewing angle, a person of average height simply won’t see what’s written on the display.

In addition to the LCD screen, there is also an LED status indicator. Its two-color left part indicates the status of the MFP, and the right part indicates the establishment of a wireless connection.

The pull-out feed tray, designed for 250 sheets of paper (hereinafter we are talking about a density of 80 g/m², unless otherwise stated), is generally convenient, except that the actuating force of its latch is slightly more than comfortable. True, there are sharp and loud sounds when removing and installing the tray, which we observed in some models different manufacturers, there is no. To assess the remaining paper, the tray is equipped with a mechanical fill level indicator.

But the bypass tray can hardly be called very convenient; in the instructions it is sometimes even called not a tray, but a “manual feed slot”: firstly, its capacity is only one sheet, or more precisely, one medium, since envelopes can also be used as such. Secondly, it’s difficult to even call it a tray: the folding part, which is usually designed to support the laid media, on the WC3225 has a depth of no more than five centimeters, and therefore the inserted A4 or Letter sheet simply hangs down.

The complaint regarding the output tray is the same as that of the vast majority of similar devices: its capacity is significantly less than that of the input tray - only 120 sheets.

The scanner's automatic document feeder capacity is 40 sheets. The automatic document feeder is not reversing, it cannot handle double-sided originals, and in combination with the built-in duplexer it can only output two single-sided originals onto one double-sided copy.

The automatic document feeder also serves as a scanner lid; its hinges allow the use of originals with increased thickness (books, magazines). If the device is planned to be placed in a niche, then to fully open the lid you will need a height of about 59 cm, but the normal opening angle for it is approximately 45 degrees - in this position it is fixed, so the height of the niche can be 3-4 cm less.

As is usually the case, there is a hinged cover on the back wall of the MFP, behind which part of the paper path, including the duplex, is hidden. You need to open it in two cases: if paper is stuck or when you need to print on media that does not allow strong bending - when printing with output into the output tray, the sheets are bent 180 degrees, and if you fold this cover and use the bypass tray, then there is virtually no bending will. Naturally, you will have to feed one media at a time, automatic duplex printing will be impossible, and you also need to provide some free space behind the printer.

On the left side of the back wall (when viewed from behind) there is a row of connectors: at the very bottom - power, higher up - USB(B) and LAN. A pair of telephone connectors, for a line and a parallel device, are also located at the rear left, but higher, above the hinged back cover.

The device does not have a mechanical switch; to turn it off, you need to press and hold the button on the control panel. But sometimes the MFP turns on without using this button, just apply voltage to the power connector.

Part of the front panel, together with the bypass tray, folds out, for which you need to press the button on its upper edge. This allows access to the cartridges and part of the feed path to remove jammed paper.

When carrying the device, there are cutouts in the lower part of the side walls for gripping by hand. Their depth is rather small - only the fingertips enter, but given the light weight of the device this is not very critical.

Working with menus, settings

After the very first turn on, messages will appear on the indicator prompting you to make initial settings: select a language, set the date-time and their display format, set the units of measurement. There are other possible settings, such as fax settings, but you can skip them; If you answer “No” at the request stage for the administrator password, then this password will not be requested every time we go a little deeper into the menu.

There will be another request for a firmware upgrade, which implies permission to update the firmware of the MFP; If the connection is USB only, this function will not work. Our device had firmware version V3.50.01.06 dated June 2014, and the downloaded user manual was dated July of the same year. However, there were differences in the manual and in the actual menu items, and with the constant improvement of the firmware (on the company’s website at the time of writing the review, V3.50.01.08 dated March 10, 2015 was offered), there will be more and more such differences. Changes in firmware are aimed at improving the functioning of the MFP, but the need for upgrades is determined by the owner or system administrator and is done manually. The procedure is simple, it is described in the instructions, and is performed with network connection using the CentreWare Internet Services web interface.

But let's return to the menu of the device itself. In the future it will be possible to change the installed ones to initial stage settings and set missed ones (except for some that can only be changed through the web interface). It is advisable to have paper in the input tray - after completing the settings, a sheet with a configuration report is printed.

The three left buttons on the control panel select the mode: copy, scan, fax. The default mode, that is, the one in which the MFP will be after turning on the power or exiting the power saving mode, is set using the menu.

The available set of settings is divided into two parts. First - operational settings current mode (copy, scan, fax), they are called up by the left button of the five-button navigation block.

The main part of the settings, including system ones, as well as default settings, is called up by pressing the button with the image of a rectangle with the letter “i”, which is highlighted in blue when switching to the settings mode. Here are also network settings, as well as commands for printing various information pages, most of which are Russified. In particular, when initial setup It may be convenient to print out the menu structure, which, although it takes up seven whole pages, is still more compact than printed instructions, only the sections and menu items will be given in English. You can also print meter status and consumables information.

In general, the menu did not seem to us very complicated or overloaded with rarely used settings, although something can still be mentioned: as in other Xerox devices, there is an altitude setting - the instructions explain that Atmosphere pressure, which decreases with increasing height, affects the printing process. It’s difficult to say how strong this influence is, but, for example, in the instructions for the WC3325 device there were no clarifications in this regard, just a list possible settings, and in this case the instructions contain specific recommendations: which setting corresponds to which height range.

When access with an administrative password is set, access to a number of menu sections - default modes, system settings and network - will require you to enter this password. By default it is “1111”, but if we answered “Yes” to the “Admin Password” request when we first turned it on, then we are given the opportunity to set our own password. You can cancel administrative access or change your password through the web interface.

The default setting is to enter power saving mode after 1 minute. We found this not very convenient for work, and we increased the value, fortunately the menu allows you to do this within a wide range, up to 60 minutes.

The timing of low toner warnings can be adjusted from the menu from 1 to 50 percent. “Toner low” is a very relative concept; it greatly depends on the machine’s load level, and it is quite logical to give the user or administrator the opportunity to configure the alert in accordance with actual operating conditions.

You can send a notification about an imminent cartridge replacement to email, but it’s hard to say how popular such a function will be. However, the very fact of its presence in a device of this class can only be welcomed.

By default, every time the MFP is turned on, a sheet with configuration information is printed - but here the logic of the developers who decided that such information is needed regularly is not very clear. True, printing can be canceled; this is done in the “System Settings” section. – Settings – Config page.”

Autonomous operation

At battery life, when the MFP is not connected to any communication lines, including telephone lines, the only possible action is copying, since printing files from offline media such as flash drives is not provided. You can only print various information pages and reports that we have already mentioned: about the configuration of the MFP as a whole and network settings, about the status of the counters, where you can see the number of printed pages, scanned images and received and sent fax messages. Despite the presence of duplex, multi-page reports are printed on only one side of the sheet.

Copy

The copy control screen displays the number of copies, which can be quickly adjusted from 1 to 99 using the number buttons, and the copy ratio.

For copying, you can set the size and type (text, text/photo, photo) of the original, scaling, adjust the density (darker-lighter) and set background processing when copying from newspapers or colored paper, as well as determine the use of duplex, copy sorting and layout - up to 4 pages of originals on one sheet of copy or copying of IDs (two spreads on one sheet; by the way, passport copies in this mode turn out to be of very high quality even without selecting settings).

As we have already said, you can change some copying parameters, except the number of copies, by pressing the left button of the five-button navigation block.

All these settings are carried out quite quickly, without unnecessarily long wandering through menus of different levels. Of course, a number of settings can be set as default settings.

Making double-sided copies from single-sided documents can be done by placing them not only in the automatic document feeder, but also on glass, which is useful when working with bound or bound materials. If originals are copied from glass in this mode, then after scanning the first sheet or spread, a request for the next sheet will follow, to which you can answer “Yes” or, if you change your mind, “No”.

When placing originals on the glass and in the ADF at the same time, the automatic document feeder has priority.

Local USB connection

When installing the software, three types of print drivers are offered: PCL, PS and XPS. You can install a number of additional utilities and programs, including OCR - a text recognition system, which is offered as ABBY FineReader 10 (the version is not the latest, but in the full-featured Professional Edition with an activation code, and not the truncated Sprint, and for it there is a separate installation disk).

You can also install the utility wireless settings Easy Wireless Setup, which when local connection need not.

As usual, you first need to start installing the software, set the connection type - in this case USB:

You should connect the MFP to your computer with a USB cable when prompted by the installation program:

As usual, upon completion of installation you are prompted to register your Xerox product.

We installed the PCL and PS drivers:

The interface of the printing settings window is similar to what we have seen in other MFPs from the company. But for some reason we have installed English language, and the indications of driver versions, which are usually displayed in one of the tabs, were missing here; they had to be found out by inf files: for PCL there was version 3.12.38.03 from 04/22/2014, for PS - 2.01.00.02 from 04/01/2014. Appearance Both drivers have the same bookmarks, and the set of settings differs only in small details: for example, for PS it is possible to mirror the printed sheet.

Note: on the right side of the window there is an additional field that displays changes that will occur to the print during a particular installation, or information about the printer settings.

This is visual and therefore convenient, but any convenience has its price: not very powerful computer Navigating through bookmarks and processing settings changes occurs with a noticeable delay.

There are two print quality options: Standard and High Resolution. In addition, there is a toner saving mode.

The Eco tab, available in both drivers, is designed to save everything:

As you can see, if you place two pages of text on one sheet (of course, with the appropriate reduction), skip blank pages and enable toner saving, you can save up to half energy, reduce paper consumption by three quarters and reduce CO 2 emissions into the atmosphere by about the same amount. This is, of course, wonderful, but if the main task is to save resources and preserve the environment, and not office printing and other types of work, then it’s probably better not to turn on the MFP at all, or even not to buy it at all. But this is how the question is seen from the point of view of the Russian consumer; Perhaps in the West the priorities are different.

Autoload includes Xerox Network PC Fax and the Xerox MFP Fax Server service, as well as the Easy Printer Manager utility, familiar to us from other Xerox MFP models, which allows you to monitor the status of the machine, including information about the remaining toner, as well as call programs for scanning and faxing ( if, of course, they were installed).

Of course, the program’s capabilities are not limited to displaying the status; you just need to switch to advanced mode. And then we will get very convenient access to the settings available in the MFP menu; to all or not to all - we did not compare point by point, but the number of settings is impressive.

From Easy Printer Manager you can start scanning and faxing, but you need to install the appropriate software to do this.

Scan to computer

For scanning, the information materials (website, brochure) indicate a standard resolution of 600×600 dpi, and the instructions indicate an optical resolution of 1200×1200 dpi. We are inclined to believe that both values are correct, only the smaller one refers to scanning from an ADF, and the larger one from a tablet (glass).

Color depth is 24-bit color and 8-bit gray scale. There is also a black and white mode (1 bit).

When connecting via USB, TWAIN (v.3.31.48.03 dated April 14, 2014) and WIA drivers are installed:

There is nothing special to say about the WIA interface, but the TWAIN driver is much more interesting: Xerox has it full of various settings and tools, including even a histogram, and the results of the adjustments and settings can be immediately viewed in the pre-scan window (except for scaling).

The resolution in the TWAIN driver can be set from 75 to 4800 dpi for both the ADF and the tablet (glass). Naturally, the maximum values are interpolation, and their use does not make much sense. WIA allows you to set values from 75 to 600 dpi for both original placement options.

In this case, the automatic feeder no longer has priority; the source that is specified in the corresponding driver field is used. But if there is a document in the APO, the driver will first offer the automatic feeder as a source.

Preview when working with POA becomes impossible. But the maximum scanning area of the ADF is larger, which is clearly visible in the driver’s viewing window (compare with the above screenshot for a tablet):

If your computer does not have programs that support the Acquire function, you can use the Easy Document Creator program, which can be called up from Easy Printer Manager or from the All Programs list.

Its settings allow you to set the resolution from 75 to 600 dpi, color mode, document size and saving format.

The Quick Scan function allows you to save the scan to a selected folder, while Advanced Scan provides other options.

You can also initiate scanning from the control panel of the MFP, including to a connected USB computer. True, you will have to press the buttons a little: select the scanning mode, set the receiver - local PC, and profile, then select the resolution, color, file saving format and original size. At the end of the scanning process you will be prompted next page, and the file will appear in the folder specified when creating the profile with a name containing the word “Scan” and the date and time.

Connecting to a local network

As usual, for devices with two network interfaces, we start by connecting to a wired network. By default, the MFP is set to receive network parameters from a DHCP server; connect the device with a patch cord to local network, after which it is better to turn it off and on.

To ensure that your network settings are correct, you can print a configuration page:

left - before connecting to the network, right - after: IP address and other parameters received

The “TCP/IP Settings” column should display the IP address, mask and gateway corresponding to the parameters of your network. Naturally, all this can be set manually using the MFP menu.

Having started the installation from the CD, at the stage of selecting the connection type, select “Network connection”:

If we are sure that the MFP is connected to the network correctly, we answer “No” to the following request:

The next steps are the same as for a USB connection. This time, among the installed software, we also selected “Easy Wireless Setup” in order to test the operation of this utility when testing a wireless connection.

Only the TWAIN driver is installed for the scanner.

If Easy Printer Manager is installed, you can manage the device using it:

You can also use the device’s web interface, which is called CentreWare Internet Services, and is called either by the corresponding Printer Manager button or by typing the MFP’s IP address in the browser.

To be able to change settings using it, you need to log in to the system by entering your username and password (admin and 1111 by default), otherwise you will only be able to view pages with information about the MFP, consumables, etc.

Let us remind you how you can disable the password request when working with the MFP control panel menu, if such a request was previously enabled: “Properties - Security - System Security - System Administrator", uncheck the box "Control panel security - Access control from local. interface" and click "Apply". If such a request was disabled, but it needs to be enabled, then there will be no checkmark, and it must be checked. You can also change the administrator password here.

In the web interface we also found confirmation of the fact that the wired interface is not at all Gigabit Ethernet as stated in the user manual:

Let's move on to the wireless connection. First, using the menu or web interface, you need to make sure that the Wi-Fi adapter is turned on: “Network - Wi-Fi”, and then we’ll try the Xerox Easy Wireless Setup utility.

Oddly enough, it certainly requires connecting the MFP with a USB cable:

After connecting, the picture changes to a list of available networks:

We select the one you need and enter the password (if required), after a while the connection will be established, as evidenced by the blue indicator below the LCD display of the MFP control panel and the corresponding message from the utility. The USB cable can be disconnected if this connection will not be used, but in “Devices and Printers” a Xerox WC3225 printer with a USB connection has also appeared, which can also be removed.

An MFP connected to a network has the same printing methods and settings as with a local connection, but it also becomes possible to print from mobile devices: smartphones or tablets. Apple devices running iOS can use the AirPrint driverless printing feature. Internet-connected devices can print via Google service Cloud Print. For such cases, the manufacturer also has its own solution - Xerox PrintBack.

For scanning also appear additional features- scanning for network computer and to WSD (Web Services on Devices), as well as to email, including simultaneous mailing to several addresses.

Working with fax messages

Since our test laboratory does not have analog telephone line, we do not conduct any experiments with faxes. Therefore, we will only briefly describe the capabilities provided by the Xerox WC3225DNI MFP.

The resolution setting has four gradations: standard, clear, very clear and photo (dpi values are not indicated). Color fax is also included in the same menu item, but sending messages in color is only possible in manual mode and, of course, if the receiving device supports this mode. Other settings include original size and brightness. Of course, there are settings related directly to fax functions - multicast, delayed and priority sending, redirection of sent and received messages to a network PC or another fax, etc. There are also The address book, which can include speed dial and group dial numbers.

Working with a fax is not much different from copying or scanning, it’s just that the typing screen appears first phone number. To access other parameters, you need to use the corresponding button.

To send fax messages from a computer to which the MFP is connected in one way or another, you must use the “Xerox MFP PC Fax” driver, which must first be installed.

Tests

For testing, we use our own methodology, which is available for repetition, and the results we obtain may not coincide with those indicated on official websites. The previously used methodology, revised and supplemented, was taken as the basis.

Readiness after switching on: 17 s (five measurements with averaging); measured from pressing the power button until the end of various processes, accompanied by corresponding sounds, and the appearance home page on the printer screen.

Copy speed

The time for copying a full-color A4 original at a scale of 1:1 (test table), from start to complete output of the sheet - two measurements with averaging.

The copying time, within the measurement error, is the same when setting the original type to “Text” and “Text/Photo”, but when setting “Photo” it increases significantly.

Maximum speed of copying a text monochrome A4 original at a scale of 1:1 (calculated from 25 pages; plain paper, original type “Text”, working with ADF).

Stated in the specifications maximum speed single-sided copying 28 copies/min. is close to the value we obtained, and for double-sided copying modes the speed is not indicated in the characteristics.

Print speed

When printing from a computer, the PCL driver was used.

Printing 11 sheets of A4 with text information (PDF file) with default settings, the time is counted from the output of the first sheet.

The maximum print speed fully corresponds to the declared value of 28 ppm.

PDF file, print 20 sheets of text with graphic design and illustrations when in different ways connections.

High Resolution2:05 9,6 2:10 9,2 2:45 7,3

When printing a PDF file at High Resolution quality via USB or Ethernet, the printer pauses after every 2 pages, so the speed is much slower. At wireless connection There are pauses even with Standard quality - not so regular, but they greatly slow down printing: the speed drops by half.

30-page DOC file(Standard quality, text in 10-point Times New Roman font, 12-point headings, from MS Word), default printer settings, USB connection.

*) double-sided printing should be assigned in the printer properties (i.e., using the driver), and not in the MS Word print dialog.

The printing speed in both modes turned out to be close to the declared one - 28 ppm, respectively. and 12 sides/min. Duplex printing saves half the paper, but more than doubles the printing time.

Scan speed

Scan from glass of A4 test strip in color (True Color) at different resolutions, from start until the image appears in the program window. All other settings are by default, and any driver processing is disabled. Two measurements with averaging.

At high resolutions, the transmission of information plays a decisive role; at low resolutions, the speed of operation of the scanner mechanisms plays a decisive role, so the scanning time at 300 and 100 turned out to be virtually the same, the difference is noticeable only with a wireless connection.

Speed of operation for different connection methods

The following tests are carried out only to assess the difference in operating speed when connected to a specific computer via different interfaces, since they strongly depend on both the properties of the computer itself and the degree of network load (in our test network, exchange takes place only between the MFP and the computer). IN wireless network Both the test computer and the MFP were connected via Wi-Fi.

Printing time for an A4 photo saved in PDF format at different installations quality (from pressing “Print” to the output of the sheet, software improvements in the driver are disabled) for different methods of connecting the computer; The measurement was carried out twice and the results were averaged.

Based on the test results, we can conclude: working with the MFP will be the fastest with a local USB connection. A 10/100 Ethernet connection is slightly slower, but the difference is not too dramatic.

But in some cases, working with a wireless connection simply cannot be called comfortable: the printing or scanning speed is noticeably, sometimes several times, lower than with wired connections, although the test network (either wired or wireless) contains only an MFP and a test computer. Most likely, the fact is that the maximum connection speed does not correspond to 802.11n declared in all sources, but to the maximum 802.11g, which is confirmed by the information displayed in the web interface:

As you can see, despite the excellent signal quality, the connection only complies with 802.11bg. We were unable to correct the situation; our test equipment with other MFP models worked normally on 802.11n, and there is a suspicion that the built-in WC3225 wifi adapter simply doesn't work anymore high speeds, and there is an error or typo in the documentation.

Noise measurement

Measurements are taken with the microphone positioned at the level of the head of a sitting person and at a distance of one meter from the MFP.

Background noise level no more than 30 dBA - quiet office space, only MFPs and a test laptop, lighting ( fluorescent lamps) and air conditioning are turned off.

Measurements were made for the following modes:

  1. peak value when turned on,
  2. one-sided printing,
  3. two-sided printing,
  4. scanning from glass,
  5. scanning using an automatic document feeder,
  6. one-sided copying using an automatic document feeder,
  7. Copy one-sided originals to two-sided copies using the automatic document feeder.

Since the noise is uneven, the table shows the maximum level values for the listed modes; the observed short-term peak levels are given through a fraction.

Noise, dBA 48 54,5 / 61 55 / 61 33,5 / 47,5 50,5 / 53,5 53 / 55,5 54 / 58,7

According to our subjective assessment, the MFP, in comparison with many similar devices we have visited, works very quietly. As you can see, this is confirmed by objective instrumental noise measurements.

Feed Path Test

During previous tests, just over 400 pages were printed on 80 g/m² Class C paper, some of them using duplex.

There were no problems with feeding, but there is no reason to praise a completely new device for this: that’s just the way it should be.

It should be noted that the remaining toner displayed at this stage does not really correspond to the one and a half thousand prints declared for the toner cartridge:

But there is a simple explanation for this: the page coverage in most of our tests exceeds (sometimes significantly) the value of 5%, by which the potential operating time of such a cartridge is estimated. This situation is quite real for any office work, so it is better to immediately buy a spare toner cartridge along with the MFP.

Now we need to evaluate working with paper of higher density. As is usually the case, different MFP units differ in the acceptable ranges of media densities; We checked the declared parameters, including those that went beyond the specified ranges (but without significant excess - the task was not to make the MFP “choke” on paper), and summarized the results in a table.

We used paper of our stated densities: 65, 100, 120, 160, 200, 220 and 280 g/m², so the lower limit had to be specified as 65 g/m². The number of pages per job for each density is 10–12, with single-sheet feeding from the bypass tray - 6 (with output to the output tray).

*) paper with a density of 55–60 g/m² was not available

Thus, in this case, the specifications are clearly modest: all components of the device cope well with paper, the density of which is noticeably higher than the declared maximum. But let us remind you that the use of media with parameters that go beyond the official specifications can only be used by the owner at his own peril and risk.

To work with other types of media - envelopes, transparencies, stickers - the instructions require using only the bypass tray. We adhered to this requirement, although the media had to be submitted one at a time. Actually, there is no need to say much about this: the MFP was quite capable of handling six envelopes and the same number of sheets of tracing paper.

Print quality

Let us remind you: when printing there are two quality gradations - Standard and High Resolution, for each of which you can enable toner saving; When copying, the quality is determined by the selected type of original - text, text/photo and photo.

The minimum possible margins are about 4 mm on each side of the sheet.

Text documents

When printing, readability is clearly maintained down to the 6th point, not only with any selected quality, but also with toner saving enabled. The fourth point size without saving toner can also be considered readable for both quality grades, but for serif fonts the readability is worse. The second point cannot be read even with a magnifying glass.

The raster is barely noticeable, mainly on small fonts in the form of unevenness of thin lines. But after turning on toner saving, the raster becomes easily distinguishable, the fill fades significantly, which is why documents printed with toner saving are suitable mainly for the role of drafts, although readability is maintained well. But turning on high resolution doesn’t make much of a difference compared to standard; even with magnification, it’s difficult to find any differences.

From left to right: Standard, High Resolution, Standard + toner save

It is interesting that when copying from an original on which the second point is also readable, the readability of the copy, as when printing, is maintained up to the 4th point. True, the fill when setting “Text” turns out to be too dense, which can be compensated for by the “Lighter” setting, but it is better to simply set “Text-Photo” or “Photo”.

Test strip

The print quality of the test strip can be assessed as quite normal: the fills are dense, the gradients are uniform, the neutral density scale is distinguishable from 1–2 to 92–93 percent. The picture is slightly spoiled by regular stripes across the movement of the sheet, and this despite the fact that we printed the samples at the very beginning of the work, and therefore the drum could not be worn out or damaged during other tests.

In normal printing, fonts with and without serifs are readable from the 4th point, but for reverse the situation is a little worse: only the 5th point is readable more or less normally, and even then in a sans-serif font, but with serifs it’s already difficult. Decorative fonts are readable only with point sizes of 7 (normal) and 9 (reverse).

The above applies to both gradations of quality, the differences of which consist only in a slightly different number of distinguishable lines per inch: if for Standard it is 75–80 lpi, then for High Resolution 70–75.

When copying, the print turns out to be excessively contrasting, both in the “Text” and “Text-Photo” modes; When installing “Photo” the situation is a little better.

Photos

For an MFP of this class, the quality of photo printing is not bad, and copying too - you just need to set the “Photo” mode.

conclusions

First, about money: prices at price.ru for MFPs Xerox WorkCentre 3225DNI at the time of writing the review, they started from 10-10.5 thousand rubles, for high-capacity cartridges for it - from 3.7-3.8 thousand.

What we get: quite compact, but quite universal device with three interfaces and good performance, capable of satisfying the printing, copying and scanning needs of a small office or company department, not to mention home users.

On the positive side, we note the relatively low noise level during operation, as well as the ability to work with wide range paper densities. The disadvantages include extremely slow operation with a wireless connection, but perhaps this is not a matter of technology, but of the “human factor”: if all sources spoke not about 802.11bgn, but about 802.11bg, then it would be immediately clear what can be expected from a Wi-Fi connection.

Lack of conveniences such as a reversing automatic feeder or the ability to work with removable media type of USB flash drives, as well as a single-sheet bypass tray and a modest LCD display, we will not classify them as disadvantages: equipment is always proportional to the price, and those users for whom any functions missing in the WC3225DNI are vitally necessary can easily choose a model from the Xerox product line more expensive, capable of meeting their needs.

We thank the Xerox representative office for providing the MFP
