Possessing a 6-color printing system, a minimum drop size of 1.5 pl, as well as a high print resolution of 5760x1440 dpi, the Epson Stylus Photo R270 home photo printer will allow you to produce professional-quality photographs in formats from 10x15 cm to A4. You can always print photos, either directly from your digital camera or from a PC. The photo printer has the function of printing on the surface of a CD/DVD1, which allows you to independently create a unique design for your archives of music, films and photos without leaving home!

Separate ink cartridges

A special feature of the printer is the use of separate high-capacity ink cartridges. This allows you to significantly reduce the cost of printing - when you run out of ink of one color, you only need to change the cartridge with this ink, and not the entire set. You also do not have to purchase any additional cartridges - neither for printing text nor for printing photos.

The Epson Stylus Photo R270 printer comes with two types of cartridges: standard and high capacity. This provides flexibility when choosing consumables. And the use of high-capacity cartridges can significantly reduce the cost of one print.

Each Intellidge cartridge is equipped with a special microchip that transmits information about the level of remaining ink to the screen and notifies you when a particular color needs to be replaced. A partially used cartridge can be removed from the printer and then reinstalled. For example, before a large volume of printing, you can install new cartridges, and then return and reuse the old ones.

Highest quality photo printing

The Epson Stylus Photo R270 represents a new generation of Epson photo printers that take photo quality to the next level. The 6-color printing system, combined with a resolution of up to 5760 x 1440 dpi and a reduced minimum ink droplet size of up to 1.5 pl, provides the highest detail, accurate halftones and no grain.

Improved quick-drying formula Epson ink Claria, combined with original Epson photo papers, delivers unrivaled color reproduction, natural inks and a color gamut superior to analog photo printing.

Your photos are guaranteed to live a long, vibrant life—when printed on original Epson media, Epson Claria ink has a lightfastness of up to 200 years2. In this case, the prints come out of the printer already dry.

High printing speed
The Epson MicroPiezo printhead features advanced variable droplet technology to achieve high speed print. At the same time, even in maximum printing modes, it is possible to achieve high speeds without loss of quality due to the use of a unique Variable Size Droplet Printing Technology - when larger droplets are used to reproduce areas of solid color, and ultra-small droplets are used to draw details and halftones.

Print borderless photos
The borderless printing function allows you to print photographs in 10x15 cm, 13x18 cm and A4 formats without white frames around the edges of the print. You can use it both when printing from a computer and without it.

Printing on disc surfaces

The function of printing directly on the surface of CDs allows you to design your own CD/DVD1. Using the Epson Print CD program, a disc layout is created, the disc is loaded into a special tray, and in a few seconds the CD with a unique design is ready!

Except standard disks, the printer also supports printing on MiniDiscs.

Printing without PC

The printer has an additional USB connector that supports PictBridge and USB Direct Print standards. USB Direct Print and PictBridge technologies allow you to print photos directly from your digital camera without using a computer.

Simply connect your compatible camera to your printer and print great-quality photos. View photos and control printing from your digital camera (direct printing options may vary depending on camera model).

How to make a perfect sculpture? According to the recommendations of the masters, it is necessary to take a suitable block and cut off all that is unnecessary from it. Apparently, the creators of the EPSON Stylus Photo R270 printer did the same, and they came up with an excellent device for printing from a PC - we were able to verify this from our own experience.

The Stylus Photo R270 model joined EPSON's line of inkjet photo printers in September 2006, replacing the previously released Stylus Photo R220. As in the previous model, the Stylus Photo R270 uses a six-color printing system with a classic set of inks, which has already become traditional for devices of this class. However, when comparing these printers, you can find many differences. So, if the Stylus Photo R220 used Quick Dry ink, then the Stylus Photo R270 uses Claria ink - technological innovation, introduced into serial products of the Japanese company in the second half of last year. According to the developers, Claria inks produce brighter and more vibrant colors in prints, and when used with EPSON branded photo paper, they provide light resistance for up to 200 years and ozone resistance for up to 25 years.

Appearance of the Stylus Photo R270 model

The Stylus Photo R270 printer is equipped with a non-replaceable piezoelectric print head that allows you to form drops various sizes(minimum volume - 1.5 pl). The maximum optimized resolution of this model is 5760x1440 dpi. According to the manufacturer, this printer (like other new models of this family), all other things being equal, prints twice as fast as its predecessors. Let's take note of this statement to check it in practice.

The printer uses a system of separate
cartridges

Like other models in the Stylus Photo R/RX family, the new printer uses a system of separate ink cartridges for each of the colors used. Thanks to this solution, maximum ink efficiency is achieved, regardless of the specific tasks being performed. It is worth noting that there are two types of cartridges available for this printer: standard and high capacity. In addition, you can purchase an economical package that includes all six cartridges - this will cost approximately 30% less than a similar set of cartridges purchased separately.

In terms of media capabilities, the Stylus Photo R270 allows you to print on both regular and specialty papers, including glossy, semi-gloss and matte photo papers, as well as stickers and thermal transfer media. The range of acceptable sheet sizes for the used media is from 89x89 to 215.9x1117.6 mm. In addition, there is a printing mode directly on the decorative surface optical disks with special coating (inkjet printable).

Although this model is primarily focused on PC use, it has USB port for direct connection of digital cameras and other external devices (in particular, digital photo albums) that support PictBridge and/or USB Direct Print standards. Perhaps we can complete the introductory part here and move on to a detailed description of this device.

In addition to the printer, the package includes network cable, disk loading frame (with a removable insert), a poster with installation and connection instructions, a set of ink cartridges, a warranty card, and a CD with drivers and software.

Port for connecting digital cameras
on the front of the printer

At first glance, you can notice a lot of new things in the design of this printer. Last fall, EPSON carried out a radical restyling of the housings of its devices, so the appearance of the Stylus Photo R270 is noticeably different from its predecessors. The printer body is made of dark plastic with a textured surface; The side panels have ventilation holes with original grilles, the shape of the cells resembling a honeycomb. The dark color of the body contrasts effectively with the silver cover on the top panel, which provides access to the print mechanism carriage for installing and replacing ink cartridges.

Having significantly modified the appearance of the printer, the developers remained faithful to the layout that has been proven over the years. Tray automatic feeding The media tray, equipped with a sliding sheet width guide, is located vertically at the rear of the chassis, and the output tray is located at the bottom of the front panel under a forward-hinged cover. Both trays are equipped with telescopically sliding panels that serve to support sheets. When not in use, the trays can be closed - this not only frees up some space in the workplace, but also prevents dust from getting inside the housing when the printer is not in use.

There are only three buttons on the control panel of the Stylus Photo R270: one of them is used to turn the printer power on and off, the other is to activate the procedure for installing or replacing cartridges, and the third is for quickly canceling a job and resuming printing after loading media. The user can find out about the current state of the device, as well as about the occurrence of errors or any other problems, using light indicators (they are installed above each of the buttons).

Buttons and indicators on the control panel

On the left side of the front panel of the printer, in a small niche, there is a USB host controller port for direct connection of digital cameras. The purpose of this connector is clearly illustrated by the embossed PictBridge logo. The USB interface port, used to connect the printer to a PC, is located at the top of the rear panel, with right side from the input tray.

The network cable is connected to the connector located in the niche on the rear panel. This connector is placed in such a way that the plug of the cable connected to it is parallel to the rear panel and does not protrude beyond the body, which allows, if necessary, to move the printer almost flush against the wall.

Installing and connecting the printer did not cause any difficulties - especially since the entire process is clearly illustrated on the attached poster. The initialization procedure for the starter kit of cartridges took only about two minutes. If the cartridges are already installed, then the printer is completely ready for operation within 35 seconds after pressing the power button.

Loading paper into the automatic feed tray is done in the usual way and is unlikely to require detailed description, but the procedure for loading disks needs to be described separately. As already mentioned, the Stylus Photo R270 can be used to print on the decorative surface of optical discs. The included frame allows you to load both standard discs with a diameter of 120 mm and 80 mm “minions” into the printer (a special insert is used to install the latter). Unlike sheets of paper, the frame with the disk is loaded into the path of the printing mechanism from the receiving tray. Before you begin printing on a disc, you must switch the printer mechanism to the appropriate mode by lowering the lever located to the left of the output tray. In this case, the tray panel rises, ending up in a strictly horizontal position. The frame with the disk is inserted into special tray guides along which it moves during the printing process. To return to working with cut-sheet media, you must raise the lever to its original position.

Now just a few words about using the offline printing function. When a digital camera compatible with PictBridge and/or USB Direct Print is connected to the printer port, the power indicator blinks to indicate detection external device. In this case, print settings are controlled through the camera menu.

Since the printer we are considering is designed primarily to work with a PC, it is necessary to pay attention software included in the delivery package. The CD contains, in addition to drivers, an electronic user manual and utility utilities, a number of software, namely:

Easy Print Module;

Print CD for disc design;

Web-to-page for printing the contents of web pages;

Easy Photo Print for printing photos;

Print Image Framer for creating layouts of artistic frames used in the design of photographs;

EPSON Creativity Suite, including Attach to Email, File Manager and Scan Assistant utilities;

Camera RAW plug-in for Easy Photo Print and EPSON Creativity Suite, allowing you to work with your photos in RAW format.

The print driver settings allow you to select one of five quality levels (draft, text, text and image, photo, best photo), type and format of the media used, color settings etc. In the layout settings, you can select modes for printing several pages on one sheet, as well as large images on several sheets for subsequent gluing. There are functions for scaling the printed page (to a given media format or indicating the scale as a percentage of the original size), rotating and mirroring the output image (the latter is necessary when printing on thermal transfer media).

For frequently used tasks, you can save custom settings with arbitrary names that are added to the drop-down list. A separate tab contains buttons for activating service functions - printing a test pattern, cleaning the print head, etc.

The monitor program window, which automatically launches on the screen when sending a print job, displays information about the current state of the printer, the ink level in the installed cartridges, as well as problems that arise and methods for solving them. There are also buttons for pausing and canceling the current task.

It’s worth telling a little about other programs included in the package. The Easy Photo Print package, designed for printing photographs, has a very simple and intuitive interface. The procedure for preparing photographs for printing is divided into three main stages: selecting photographs, choosing the type and format of paper, choosing a layout and composing the image.

Built-in Easy Photo Print tools allow you to work with images in JPEG and TIFF formats, and when you install the plug-in included in the package, you can implement support for images saved in RAW format. In the version presented on disk, this module allows you to view and print images directly from RAW files saved by digital SLR cameras Canon EOS (10D, 20D, 300D and 350D), Nikon (D50, D70, D70s, D100 and D200), Konica Minolta Dynax (5D and 7D), Olympus (E-1, E-300 and E-500), Pentax *ist (DS, DS2, D and DL), and EPSON R-D1 and R-D1s digital rangefinders.

Easy Photo Print uses a built-in file browser to select image folders. If there is a file with DPOF data in the selected image folder, you can use it to automatically select images. In addition, there is a function to search for images by file name and shooting date.

The program supports Exif and P.I.M. standards, thanks to which the corresponding data stored in headers graphic files, can be used in the mode of automatic correction of color and tonal parameters of printed images. There are also built-in image editing tools: functions for rotating (in 90° increments), cropping, framing and red-eye removal (with automatic or manual setting). The templates available in the program allow you to display one or several images at once on one sheet of the selected format, as well as create index printouts.

EPSON Print CD allows you to minimal costs effort and time to create and edit images for printing on discs. The user has at his disposal tools for drawing lines, various geometric shapes, as well as creating inscriptions, the appearance of which can be transformed using various effects. You can also use raster images in the design of the disc, combining them with other elements. This completes the descriptive part, and now we will tell you about our impressions of using the printer and present test results.

Of course, we were interested in getting a clear answer to the question of whether the information about the twofold increase in performance of the Stylus Photo R270 compared to previously released models is true. According to the results of the tests, printing a borderless image on 10x15 cm Premium Glossy paper in the “photo” mode takes 35-40 s, and with the highest possible quality - 2 min 15 s. To print a borderless image on a sheet of Premium Semigloss A4 paper in “photo” mode, the printer took a little over 2 minutes, and in “best photo” mode - 5 minutes 14 seconds.

We compared these results with the performance of the Stylus Photo R340, which we tested in our laboratory a little less than a year ago. To print a borderless photo on 10x15 cm Premium Glossy paper, this printer took 1 minute 34 seconds in normal mode and 3 minutes 40 seconds when installed best quality. To display a borderless image on Premium Semigloss A4 paper with normal quality it took 5 minutes 14 s, and with the best quality it took 9 minutes 14 s. Thus, the Stylus Photo R270 truly has a twofold performance advantage over the previous generation model.

It is gratifying that the increase in productivity did not affect the quality of the resulting prints. The printer perfectly reproduces both bright and saturated and pale pastel shades; gradient fills look almost perfect. Very good results managed to obtain on glossy papers, including the new Ultra Glossy Photo Paper with a density of 300 g/m 2. This type of paper is well suited for printing high-contrast photographs with bright, rich colors and well-developed details. And for imitation and reproduction of artistic works (for example, watercolor drawings), paper with a matte finish is best suited.

Inexperienced people are unlikely to be able to distinguish photographs printed in the “photo” and “best photo” modes with the naked eye. And if so, then it makes no sense to use the maximum quality mode - especially considering that in this case the image output time will increase by about 2.5 times, and ink consumption will be slightly higher. Even in “photo” mode, the level of quality provided by this device allows you to fully satisfy the needs of not only beginners, but also experienced amateur photographers.

The monitor program window appears
on the screen when sending a print job

During operation, the printer demonstrated high reliability. The media feed mechanism worked perfectly: there was not a single case of paper jams or multiple sheets being caught at once. Loading discs was also no problem. Despite the abnormally hot weather during testing, all print head nozzles functioned normally, and, contrary to our fears, there was no need to run a forced cleaning procedure.

Let's summarize. Among the advantages of the Stylus Photo R270 are high (for devices of this class) performance, excellent print quality on a wide range of media (including CD/DVD and thermal transfer paper), a system of separate ink cartridges and a diverse set of software. Among the shortcomings, we can only note the rather large (for A4 format devices) dimensions of the case - apparently, this is a tribute to unification model range Stylus Photo R/RX family.

Easy Photo Print - made simple
and a convenient tool for printing photos

Another serious argument in favor of the Stylus Photo R270 is its affordable price. This six-color printer, capable of printing an A4 photo in less than 2.5 minutes, can be purchased for about 3,500 rubles. Agree, this is an excellent option for those who print photos from a computer, since there is no need to overpay for extra functionality (for reference: the Stylus Photo R390 model, built on the same printing mechanism, but equipped with an offline printing system, card reader and display, will cost at least twice as expensive). In addition, the Stylus Photo R270 can be used without any problems as a regular home printer for everyday tasks - outputting text, graphics, etc.

Compared to its predecessor, the Stylus Photo R220 printer, which is still on sale, the R270 model looks more attractive. Despite the fact that the retail price of these devices is almost the same, the Stylus Photo R270 is more than twice as powerful in terms of performance (while not inferior in image quality) and has a small bonus - the ability to directly print from digital cameras.

The editors express gratitude to the Moscow representative office of EPSON Europe B.V. for the provided Stylus Photo R270 printer and a set of consumables for it. You can find detailed information about EPSON products on the website http://www.epson.ru/.

The color device will serve as a reliable assistant for the photographer; it is also used for printing in the office and at home. The paint palette works with 6 colors. This unit works with an alternative mechanism - a modern ink system, which will provide savings of 10 to 20 times. CISS uses ink tanks hundreds and thousands of times. High-quality printing remains at the same level as using factory cartridges.

Appearance and size

The steel-colored inkjet device with medium dimensions: 453x343x193 mm will fit comfortably into your office. The printer with a rounded matte surface is protected from scratches.

Functions

The presented model will produce exceptional images in the maximum A4 format, thanks to its resolution: 5760x1440 dpi and a minimum droplet size of 1.5 pl. The unit can be purchased in Moscow and other cities of Russia, also in the Lucky-Print TM online store. There are convenient conditions for delivery of goods.
