MediaTek Helio X30 failed processor. MediaTek Helio X30 and the first smartphone with the new Mediatek helio x30 processor smartphones

In this year's fast-paced race for leadership in the processor market, MediaTek seems to be far behind. While Samsung and Qualcomm topped the top of the most in-demand processor manufacturers, reaching a whole new level in terms of device performance, 2017 will be a very important year for the Taiwanese brand. However, the beginning of next year does not bode well: the new flagship processor Helio X30, announced, apparently did not find a response in the hearts of consumers or manufacturers.

It is already known that the top three brands Huawei, OPPO, and Vivo, do not plan to use the Helio X30 as part of their future flagships. And if Huawei's lack of interest can be explained by the fact that the company uses Kirin processors of its own production, then the refusal of Vivo and OPPO - two of the fastest growing brands in China - to cooperate with MediaTek came as a surprise to many. Models manufactured by HTC in 2017, most likely, will also not receive the Helio X30 processor. MediaTek can only hope for brands like Meizu and Xiaomi. According to rumors, the future flagship of 2017 from Meizu will be based on the aforementioned MTK processor. While Xiaomi has recently increasingly preferred processors from Qualcomm.

All these circumstances seem strange, because on paper Helio X30 looks powerful processor, quite worthy of a flagship device. First of all, it uses an efficient version of the 10nm architecture, which can meet the requirements of the most modern devices. MediaTek claims that thanks to the two Cortex A73 cores, the processor performance has increased by 43% and power consumption has decreased by 53% compared to the previous generation.
Despite the above parameters, things are not going well for the Helio X30. And MTK will have to compete with competitors in order to regain its market position in 2017.

More recently, MediaTek has introduced new processors in China, including the flagship Helio X30. And already known specific devices, which will appear on the market next year and will be equipped with the latest chipset. This, of course, is about Vernee Apollo 2.

First, a few words about the processor itself. First, it will be the first chipset built on a 10nm process technology. Accordingly, in terms of energy efficiency, it should become one of the best and at the same time productive solutions on the market.

Secondly, it will contain three clusters with 10 cores:

  • two Cortex A73 cores with a peak frequency of up to 2.8 GHz
  • four Cortex A53 cores with an operating frequency of 2.3 GHz
  • four remaining energy-efficient Cortex A35s with 2 GHz

The IMG 7XTP-MT4 accelerator, operating at a frequency of up to 820 MHz, will be responsible for the graphics. It is 43 percent more productive than its predecessor (Mali-T880) in the previous Helio X20.

In addition, the new system-on-a-chip will support LPDDR4X RAM up to 8 GB (up to 1866 MHz) and UFS 2.1 type flash memory.

One of the first smartphones to run on the new processor will be the Vernee Apollo 2. Its release is scheduled for March 2017. So far, there are no details about the future news, except perhaps for the presence of a Super AMOLED display. All this tells us that the partnership between MediaTek and Vernee has a positive trend and both companies have joint, far-reaching plans for the future.

By the way, the freshly baked Chinese manufacturer has another trump card up its sleeve. So, in May 2017, the release of Apollo 2 Pro is expected, as the “brains” of which it is planned to use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 830.

However, this is all just plans for now, but for now we will return to what we have. China has finally announced the launch of the Vernee Apollo smartphone, which we first heard about this spring and which finally made it to the market.

Let me remind you that the device is equipped with the top-end MediaTek Helio X25, 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal memory, as well as a 21-megapixel main camera (Sony IMX230 sensor). This device also refers to the flagship class of devices and its display is a 2K panel with a dot density of 541 ppi, which is the best suited for use in VR headsets.

Of course, the release was announced, but there are still no specific dates and prices yet. At MWC 2017, not only new smartphones and tablets are shown, but also those components that form the basis of new devices and make them so powerful and attractive. With the advent of the new season, all attention has shifted to the Snapdragon 835 chipset, which, presumably, will be based on. To previously unveiled well-known 10nm chipsets (Snapdragon 835 and ) at the Barcelona exhibition mobile technology another alternative has been added - MediaTek Helio X30.

Helio X30 chipset back in August 2016, on Mobile World Congress, MediaTek officially announced its release and that it will be available soon. The first smartphones based on Helio X30 will be released in the second quarter of this year. Earlier, the Chinese vendor Vernee has already announced that its upcoming Apollo 2 will be based on the Helio X30. This smartphone is already . In the coming weeks, it will probably become known which other smartphones will be based on the new chipset.

Imagination Technologies has additionally announced that the MediaTek Helio X30 will contain its PowerVR GPU. The advanced 10nm process is reported to reduce power consumption by 50% while improving performance by 35% over its predecessor.

Flagship chipsets of the previous generation, which include the Snapdragon 821 on which the LG G6 is based, are manufactured in accordance with the 14-nanometer process technology.

Helio X30 is equipped with a 10-core central processing unit with three core clusters. For the most demanding tasks on the processor resources, a pair of Cortex-A73 cores is used, the clock frequency of which reaches 2.8 GHz. Four cores of medium performance Cortex-A53 are capable of operating at a clock speed of 2.2 GHz. For tasks that do not require high processor performance, four cores of 1.9 GHz Cortex-A35 cores are used.

The new Helio X30 chipset supports RAM LPDDR4X up to 8 gigabytes, which is typical, however, for other 10-nanometer chipsets - Snapdragon 835 and Exynos 8895. This feature of the chipset can be used in Vernee Apollo 2. Support for eMMC 5.1 or UFS 2.1 flash memory is also implemented. special attention deserves a PowerVR GPU. A similar graphics subsystem, although significantly modified, has found wide application in Apple's iPhone. And it is very unexpected and pleasant to see it in the MediaTek chipset. After all, earlier it was graphics processors that were considered the weakest point of MediaTek chipsets.

Clock frequency GPU of the considered chipset reaches 800 megahertz. It is 2.4 times faster than its predecessor Helio X20 and 60% more energy efficient. Thanks to this technological approach, MediaTek Helio X30 supports displays with a resolution of up to 2560 x 1600 pixels. It uses two 14-bit image signal processors (ISPs) to support dual-sensor cameras with a resolution of 16 megapixels ( dual cameras) or a 28-megapixel sensor.

The chipset in question was the first to implement hardware-based 10-bit HDR10 4K video decoding. Playing video with a resolution of 4K, thanks to the capabilities of the chipset, will be able to be carried out at a speed of 30 frames per second. Helio X30 is also equipped with a Category 10 LTE modem, the theoretical maximum speed of which is 450 megabits per second.

The use of the latest CorePilot 4.0 technology allows you to increase the battery life of the device without recharging, as it predicts the usage scenario of the device, prioritizing, that is, the chipset is able to “understand” which application is the most important at a certain point in time. The energy savings achieved with this new technology can be up to 25%.

X30 with quad core GPU PowerVR GT7400 has all the qualities of a modern powerful chipset. It is productive, economical and in its own way technical specifications able to provide excellent graphics processing. Now it remains only to wait for testing in the benchmark of a smartphone based on the new chipset.

Which MediaTek Helio X30 based smartphones would you like to see in the near future?
