How to cut a nano sim from a regular one. Types of SIM cards: sizes, trimming. Why is the infection harmful?

Happy iPhone owners often encounter a problem that is not obvious at first glance. The color of the phone has been chosen best generation determined, bought a cover, protective glass and power bank too. And they forgot the most important thing - switch from micro-SIM to nano-SIM. And, as many people know, new iPhone will not start without a SIM card inserted. So what to do in such a situation?

What is nano-SIM?

Old generations of cards mobile operators They were quite large in size and became smaller over the years. Fortunately, today, when choosing the appropriate tariff and purchasing new SIM card clients are given a card the size of a bank card, and it contains three SIM card slots:

  • standard;
  • micro;
  • nano.

Why did Apple, one of the first manufacturers, and then other companies, begin to actively switch to such a small chip size? The thing is that smartphone cases were becoming thinner (by about 20%), and the “filling” required more and more space. Thus, companies have saved on SIM card size for the sake of performance.

How to make a nano-SIM yourself?

There are many ways to make a nano-SIM from a micro-SIM at home - there are templates for cutting on the Internet.

How to make a nano-SIM:

  1. Trim the SIM card with thin and sharp scissors.
  2. Polish it with sandpaper.

Typically, nano differs from its predecessor by 0.1 millimeters. It's not noticeable, but trying to insert the card into the slot will be unsuccessful. The most latest model Moreover, it is as close as possible to finding the chip that is responsible for the performance of the SIM card. This method is suitable for a person who knows how to cut plastic evenly and clearly.

Content

Each mobile device works with the network through a special card with a chip, which is popularly called “Simka”. The chipset contains information that is used to communicate with the operator and provide services, storing a small amount of data. Now they produce several SIM formats, which differ in size.

What is a nano SIM card

Each owner bought a package from MTS, Megafon or TELE2 to use communication services. All owners were the first to become familiar with what a nano SIM card means. iPhone models older than 4th. The new smartphone used a completely different card format, which was called NanoSim. The innovation was due to the fact that the iPhone had become 20% thinner and the manufacturer was looking for ways to reduce the content. The standard connector was replaced with a narrower one, and nanoSIMs began to be used instead of MicroSIM.

Residents of Moscow and other Russian cities were not ready, operators did not have time to issue new types of cards, so many needed to cut their SIM cards for a nano SIM. Old cards simply did not fit into SIM card slots (even MiniSIM and microSIM cards). All other smartphone manufacturers followed the giant's example and copied the new format to also reduce the thickness of the device.

Micro SIM and nano SIM - the difference

The most important difference between a nano SIM and a micro SIM is the size and thickness. The chip also works well, there are no innovations in communication or data transmission technology, just smaller parameters made it possible to make the iPhone even thinner. Problems arose only for users who decided to switch to new smartphone from Apple, and from operators, because the main complaints regarding the size of the SIM card were addressed to Beeline, MTS and Megafon. However, this complexity did not stop people for long, because the difference in parameters is small, for example, a micro-SIM is 12x15 mm, and a nano-SIM is 9x12 mm.

How to cut a SIM card for a nano SIM

Those who had just purchased a brand new iPhone really didn’t want to wait and a pressing question arose: how to cut a micro SIM card for a nano SIM? The chip size of the SIM cards is the same, and the main problem There was a lot of plastic around the edges. To reduce to nano format, you can do the following:

How to make a nano sim from a micro sim

If you don’t want to travel or go anywhere, you can try to reduce the size of the SIM card yourself. There is a proven way to cut a micro SIM card under a nano SIM if you have a printer, scissors and double-sided adhesive paper. It should be remembered that during trimming there is a possibility of getting a non-working SIM card from a working SIM card. You perform all actions at your own peril and risk. You will need:

  • double-sided tape (you can use glue, but this option is worse;
  • micro or standard SIM card;
  • printer and paper;
  • ruler;
  • pencil;
  • scissors (or nail clippers);
  • sandpaper.

The rules for pruning will not differ depending on the gadget, for an Apple phone or tablet. In order not to cut off extra millimeters and not damage the circuit, you will need a nano format SIM card template, which can be easily downloaded. Next you need to do the following.

  1. Print the downloaded template; there is no need to change the scale or location of the drawing. You don't need color printing, regular black and white will suffice. It is important that the drawing is simply clear.
  2. Using scissors, cut the template to the size that fits your card. Inside the picture, the parameters for the nano-SIM card will be indicated.
  3. Glue it with tape/glue to the side of the SIM card on which the operator’s logo is written (the chip should not be exposed to any impact). Focus on the cut corner of the drawing, which will prevent you from making a mistake with the correct sides.
  4. Wait for the glue to dry (not required in the case of tape), and carefully cut off the excess plastic along the lines of the template. If the scissors are not sharp enough, use nail clippers.
  5. Remove the glued paper from the SIM card.

Don’t worry that the cut lines will run in close proximity to the chip; this will not affect the performance of the micro-SIM in any way unless you deliberately touch it. Use sandpaper to round the edges and sand down any rough edges on the plastic. If the card is difficult to fit on one side, sharpen it a little more with sandpaper.

How to make a nano sim from a regular one

The exact same method that was described above is suitable if you have a question about how to make a nano SIM from a regular SIM card. Please note that older card models have a larger chip, so you will have to remove almost all the plastic around the circuit. Residues should be removed carefully with sandpaper or a nail file. Another subtlety of old SIM card models is thickness. The new format has become not only small, but also thin, so in addition to the four sides, you will have to sharpen the back side, where you have Megafon or MTS written on it.

Another option is to buy a special device from an online store that cuts the card to the required size. Outwardly, it looks like a stapler; a regular SIM is placed inside, the handles are carefully pressed, and all excess is cut off in one click. The tool can cut Micro or Nano format. Exactly the same devices are used in the communications and mobile departments. The tool is inexpensive, but there is no point in buying it just to reduce 1 card.

Adapter for nano SIM card

This standard size is used only in new smartphones and gadgets from Apple. If at some point you took the phone more old model, then you will need an adapter for a nano SIM card. This is a special adapter in which the card is placed and it is tightly fixed in it, enlarging it. The cost of such an adapter is very low. Then you simply insert the adapter into your phone and use it.

Where to change a regular SIM card to a nano one

If you don’t risk cutting your standard SIM, it’s better to exchange it for free for a new option from your operator. This is the only sure way to get a nano SIM with your number. Operators offer you to change to another card. All you need to do is come to the post office and take with you:

  • passport;
  • contract;
  • old map.

Where to cut a SIM card

If you decide that you don’t want to do anything yourself to avoid damage, then there are two options for cutting the SIM card. You can come to a communication store, they will offer you either to completely replace the plastic, get a new SIM, which has several layers and can be squeezed out of the shell to the required format. Or the employee will use the “stapler” described above. The second option is to go to your nearest phone repair shop. Each of these departments also has a stapler; for a nominal price (and in some places even free) they will cut off the excess plastic for you.

Nano SIM card price

If you contact a mobile phone store, the exchange will be carried out absolutely free of charge. Now this takes just a few minutes. And within a day, your old plastic will stop functioning completely. If you contacted a workshop or store household appliances, then you should know how much it costs to cut a SIM card. As a rule, the cost of the service ranges in large cities from 100 to 300 rubles. The price may be lower, and some kind craftsmen do it for free.

Before starting the instructions, I will immediately note that I do not have an iPhone 5, or even a device on which I could test the functionality of the Nano SIM card. That is, I cannot guarantee the performance of the final product, and all calculations when creating the manual version of Nano SIM were based only on mathematical calculations. In general, in this lesson I will show how I myself cut Nano SIM cards from Micro SIM cards according to the dimensions indicated in the nano-SIM card specifications. Of course, in the end it turned out to be 100% identical in size to the original, but still comparable to what can be purchased officially. Therefore, I think that such a “stub” will work both with the iPhone 5 and with another smartphone with Nano SIM cards.

Probably, first of all, you need to watch the video, which shows a step-by-step guide on how to turn a Micro SIM into a Nano SIM.

Note: Before you begin, it's worth reading a little additional information. I won’t talk about mathematics and geometry, since I hope your knowledge is at least at the high school level? The main thing is not to rush and be careful.

Obviously, it's much easier to buy a real Nano if you can. SIM card, but if you have insurmountable circumstances, well then maybe this lesson will come in handy.

First of all, you will need to write down the characteristics of the Nano SIM card separately. You can find the specifications at this link.

In general, we have the following numbers:
Width: 12.3 mm
Length: 8.8 mm
Thickness: 0.67 mm

The sizes, of course, are very small and you can’t get out of this with a simple ruler. Therefore, if you have an electronic caliper, then it will be very useful for measurements. In any case, I can advise you to buy one for your home; for example, it’s not that expensive in the Amazon store. But this is already offtopic.

Go to the ETSI website where there is a short text about the Nano SIM, but I will make an excerpt - the point is that this nano SIM can be made in different ways, that is, there are several varieties, but in the end it will still be backwards compatible With existing standards SIM cards. New design assumes the same functionality as all SIM cards.

First of all, I measured the width, length and thickness of the Micro-SIM card I have. Thus, I already have an idea of where and how much I should cut off in order for it to become a homemade nano-SIM card.

Of course, some Micro-SIM cards may differ slightly from each other, but in general the sizes are approximately the same.

I measured my Micro-SIM card and, in general, these are the dimensions:
Width: 14.99 mm
Length: 12.03 mm
Thickness: 0.81 mm

After that, we turn on our brains, remember the math, and it turns out that we need to cut the width by 2.69 mm, the length by 3.28 mm, and the most difficult thing is to reduce the thickness of the card by 0.14 mm.

In a kind of surgical operation, I used regular scissors to reduce my card in length and width. It was a different story with attempts to reduce the thickness of the map. To do this, I boldly took sandpaper. You can also use sandpaper to reduce each side of the SIM card by a few hundredths of a millimeter to get the required 1-in-1 dimensions.

Thus, you can get something similar to this (see photo). You need to trim little by little with the calculation of a digital caliper, from time to time comparing with the required dimensions of the real Nano-SIM. You must be careful and not rush to cut on each side, because you can make a mistake even by a hundredth of a millimeter and destroy the card chip.

In the end, of course, I won’t be able to check the functionality of the card until I get my hands on an iPhone 5, and I can’t rush things either - until you buy a smartphone that works with a Nano-SIM card, you shouldn’t be smart and cut your micro-SIM card . Otherwise, you can kill her without the possibility of recovery. The final product looks very similar to what we were only shown in photographs before. To check the functionality, I simply used the good old Nokia, and tried to attach a cut-down SIM card to the contacts to check. The phone was able to detect the SIM card, indicating a high chance of successful completion of the operation.

Of course, I don’t know how efficient such a card will be on Nano-SIM smartphones, but I think it’s unlikely that anyone will do better. Therefore, my advice to you is to try to make your own nano-SIM card from an unnecessary old one. Moreover, you can even take a classic SIM card as a basis and also adjust it to the size of the new Nano-SIM, since the chip is the same everywhere anyway.
By the way, for those who don’t remember, we have already tried to make a Micro-SIM out of a simple SIM card and quite successfully.

P.S.: You are responsible for all actions with SIM cards.

Innovation in technology requires the integration of compact solutions. This rule is especially relevant for smartphone users. New phone models are constantly appearing on the market, and the Russian market does not always have time to quickly adapt to modern trends. This problem even affected iPhone 5 users, since this phone requires a SIM card in nano-SIM format.

Entrepreneurs opened service centers, where for a small fee the SIM card was cut to the required size. In addition, many people have tried to cut the card at home. At the same time, home craftsmen did not have the necessary knowledge and skills, which is why the SIM card was often damaged and became unusable.

Exchange of SIM cards in communication shops

There is no need for pruning. New and existing Tele2 subscribers can exchange a regular card for a NanoSim at the operator’s office, without having to pay for anything.

It is issued to new subscribers when connecting to Tele2. In this case, you can replace the SIM card, but to do this you will have to bring your identification card to the operator’s office. Specialists will check the data and issue a nano-SIM, but a duplicate will cost 50 rubles, which will be returned to your account within 24 hours.

To save time, before visiting the provider’s office, you can contact the Tele2 support service by calling 611. Employees will provide information about the office where you can make the exchange.

Cutting a SIM card at home

The difference between a standard card and a NanoSim lies solely in the amount of plastic that surrounds the chip. Therefore, it is necessary to form the required size while maintaining the integrity of the chip.

The result of the manipulations described below will be a card with the following dimensions:

  • Length – 1.23 cm;
  • Width – 0.88 cm;
  • Thickness – 0.067 cm.

First way

If someone you know has a nano-sim, then it is used as a template. Following the example of a mini SIM card, the contours of a regular SIM card are outlined, after which the excess plastic is removed.

Second way

This course of action requires preparation. The tools you should prepare are a tray, a ruler, scissors, a pen and sandpaper.

  1. Take a ruler. The parameters of the length and width of the tray are measured.
  2. All calculation parameters are applied to the SIM card. The necessary lines are drawn along and across contact group.
  3. One of the corners is cut off. The dimensions of the triangle are measured, the dimensions of the leg of which are 0.15-0.20 cm. Cutting is performed along the hypotenuse.
  4. Circumcision is done along the lines. Everything unnecessary is eliminated, and the edges of the card are made more round. As a result, the nano-sim fits better into the tray.
  5. The reverse side is sanded until the required thickness is achieved.
  6. The resulting nano-SIM is inserted into the smartphone tray and its functioning is checked. If the smartphone has registered in the Tele2 network, then the event has been successfully completed. If the result is the opposite, you will have to go to the office of the mobile communications company.
