How to work with latitude and longitude coordinates. Unusual places on Google Earth maps exit coordinates from the looking glass

WITH Google Planet Earth you can find out the coordinates of latitude and longitude for any point on the globe. This feature is available in the PC version.

How to find out the coordinates

  1. Move the cursor to the desired point. The coordinates will appear in the lower right corner of the window.

If the cursor is outside the map, Google Earth will show the coordinates for the point in the center of the screen.

How to choose a coordinate format

You can choose how the program displays the coordinates. The following formats are available to you:

  • Example: 37.7°, -122.2° .
  • Degrees, minutes, seconds.
  • Degrees, minutes with decimals. Example: 32° 18.385"N 122° 36.875"W.
  • Universal Transverse Mercator. Example: 549912.16 m B 8481456.23 m S.

How to search using coordinates

If you know the coordinates, Google Earth will instantly take you to the right place.

  1. Open the Google Earth app.
  2. In the search bar on the left, enter coordinates in one of these formats:
    • Degrees with decimals. Example: 37.7°, -122.2° .
    • Degrees, minutes, seconds. Example: 37°25"19.07"N, 122°05"06.24"W.
  3. Google Earth will take you to that point, and its coordinates will appear in the lower right corner of the screen.

How to show the coordinate grid on the map

To find out the exact location more conveniently, turn on the coordinate grid:

The main coordinates are marked on the grid lines. The exact values are shown in the lower right corner of the screen.

Geographic coordinates are used to determine a point on Earth. In this case, the planet is taken as a kind of ball, which allows you to determine the longitude, latitude and height. In the age of improving electronic maps, almost every one of them allows you to search for a place by entering the appropriate values. Today we would like to demonstrate how to perform this operation on the example of a world-famous web service called Google Maps.

There are certain concepts of entering coordinates so that the service can parse the values, but we will talk about this a bit later. Now I would like to draw your attention to the fact that two ways of accomplishing the task will be presented below - through the full version of the site and the mobile application. The principle of operation is practically the same, however, it is required to take into account the structure of the interface. Therefore, you just have to choose the appropriate method and follow the instructions.

Supported input format and coordinate conversion

Maps from Google supports the entry of coordinates according to certain rules that apply to other geographic directions. If you take into account the official guidelines, you will notice that the developers recommend adhering to the following formats:

  • 41°24’12.2″N 2°10’26.5″E- that is, alternate indication of degrees minutes and seconds with longitude and latitude;
  • 41 24.2028, 2 10.4418 - degrees and decimal minutes without longitude and latitude (this is already included in the numbers);
  • 41.40338, 2.17403 - decimal degrees (without defining minutes, seconds, longitude and latitude).

Sometimes such rules lead to the fact that the user has to convert the existing values into one type before starting to enter, so that the search correctly perceives the specified coordinates. The easiest way to do this is to use online services that will automatically make calculations. Let's look at a small conversion example.

Now let's go directly to the methods of searching by coordinates on the service in question.

Method 1: Full version of the site

Default full version The Google Maps website provides more tools and features, but the mobile app has its own advantages. If you choose this option, you should search like this:

  1. On the main Google page go to section "Cards", opening a list of all services.
  2. In the search bar on the left, enter the available values and press the key Enter.
  3. Once a point is displayed, you can view detailed information about it.
  4. Nothing prevents you from also laying a route by specifying one of the points using coordinates.
  5. If you need to know the coordinates of any place on the map, just click on it right click mouse and select "What's in here?".
  6. A small panel will appear at the bottom, where the coordinate numbers will be marked in gray.

As you can see, there is nothing difficult in performing a search. The main thing here is to follow the input rules and specify the coordinates in the same format. Further, the card will independently provide all necessary information about the found point.

Method 2: Mobile application

Now mobile Google app Maps are used by many users, as it allows you to find out the schedule of traffic, get any route and use GPS navigation. Of course, the built-in functionality will solve the issue with the search by coordinates, which is done like this:

If for any reason Google service The map does not suit you or he cannot find the specified point, we recommend that you try the same operation through the maps from Yandex. Detailed instructions on this topic can be found in our other article at the following link.

Now you are familiar with two methods of finding a place from coordinate values on Google Maps. This will allow you to study the point in detail, determine its exact position relative to other objects, or set it as one of the goals of the route.

Mapping services on the Internet are becoming more and more popular among web users and various mobile applications. Such resources are created in order to quickly find a city, country, street, determine the coordinates of a settlement. In this regard, global search engines, such as Yandex and Google, are releasing online and offline applications that allow you to search by coordinates on a map. By entering data on latitude and longitude in the desired line, a person gets the opportunity to determine exactly where the desired object is located.

How to find out and enter the coordinates of a place

The user must download a map of the desired country or region to a computer, laptop or gadget. The search for coordinates and entering them to determine the location is carried out as follows:

  • Open the search bar on the map.
  • Choose an option from the proposed categories - "food", "hotels", "transport", "attractions", "shop", "ATM", "parking", etc.
  • Select the desired query option to determine the coordinates. First, the address. Here enter the city, street, house number. Secondly, the name of the place. Thirdly, any keyword. The search bar will suggest possible words.
  • Select "coordinates" in the search bar, click "reflect on map". The desired object will be displayed on the map.
  • It often happens that you need to find the location of an object in another country. In this case, the user first selects a country, and then searches for a place.

Determining the coordinates of an object is very simple. Having found a place on the map, the user clicks on it and looks at the bottom of the screen. The exact coordinates of the place will be indicated there. The received information is expressed in several formats:

    • In decimal degrees - 21.40043, 2.1235.
    • In degrees and decimal minutes - 41 24.2028.
    • In degrees, minutes and seconds - 28°29'12.2"N 5°12'20.5"E.

You need to enter the available coordinates into the online maps correctly:

    • The Latin letter d is replaced by the degree sign.
    • Use dots instead of commas to separate coordinates.
    • First enter the latitude and then the longitude.
    • Latitude is indicated in values from -90 degrees to 90 degrees.
    • Longitude is specified in the range from -180 degrees to 180 degrees.

If you want to enter a specific coordinate in Google Maps or Google Earth, you just need to enter it into a search engine, following certain rules. This is a very practical way out if you want to send someone via chat or send via e-mail the coordinate we want you to render.

Nomenclature of degrees

Google Earth uses a brass-type angular coordinate system, so it must be written in the order latitude, longitude.

In the case of latitudes for the northern hemisphere, it will be necessary to write it positive, negative for the southern hemisphere. In the case of latitudes for the eastern hemisphere (from Greenwich to Asia), it will be positive, and for the west, that is, for America, it will be negative.

In the case of Google Earth, written in the left panel, recorded and then click on search

Google Maps if , top left search engine, and then click the search button, as shown in the following examples.

1. Coordinates in degrees, minutes and seconds (DMS): 41°24’12.2″N 2°10’26.5″E

In this case, the decimals must be in seconds and the degrees must be rounded.

This means that this coordinate is 41 degrees above the equator because it is positive, and 2 degrees east of Greenwich because it is positive. A common mistake is the minute symbol, you should use ("), often people confuse it with an apostrophe and generate an error (").

If you're having trouble finding a character, you can copy paste from that address 41°24"12.2"N 2°10"26.5"E and just change the data.

2. Coordinates in degrees and minutes (DMM): 41 24.2028, 2 10.4418

Degrees are rounded, and minutes include decimals that will be carried over by seconds. As you can see, in the lower part the same coordinate is reflected only in degrees.

3. Coordinates in decimal degrees without minutes or seconds (DD): 41.40338, 2.17403

In this case, there are only degrees, and this is the most used latitude/longitude type, and as you can see, always the top line stores the coordinate in degrees, minutes, and seconds.

4. UTM coordinates in Google Maps

For UTM coordinates, Google Maps does not have a feature that allows you to enter coordinates. You can do it with excel template and drag them as shown in the following application.

Step 1: Download the data feed template. Although the article focuses on UTM coordinates, the app has latitude and longitude templates in decimal degrees, as well as degrees, minutes, and seconds format.

Step 2. Download the template By selecting a template with data, the system will issue a warning if there was data that could not be verified; These checks include:

  • If the coordinate columns are empty
  • If coordinates have non-numeric fields
  • If the zones are not between 1 and 60
  • If in the hemisphere of the field there is something other than north or south.

In the case of long coordinates, it is true that latitudes do not exceed 90 degrees or that longitudes exceed 180.

Description data supports HTML content such as shown in the example, which includes image expansion. The same will support things like links to routes on the Internet or to a computer's local drive, videos or any other content.

Step 3. Show the data in the table and on the map.

Immediately the data is loaded, the table will show the alphanumeric data and the geographic location map; As you can see, the loading process involves converting these coordinates to geographic format, as required by Google Maps.

By dragging the icon on the map, you can preview the street views or 360 views uploaded by users.

Once the icon is released, you can visualize the waypoints placed in Google Street View and navigate through them. By clicking on the icons, you can see the details.

Step 4. Get Map Coordinates, You can add points to an empty table or one loaded from Excel; the coordinates will be displayed based on this template, automatically numbering the label column and adding the details obtained from the map.

Here you can see the template in action in the video.

Upload a Kml map or spreadsheet to Excel using the gTools service.

Enter the upload code, after which you have a file that you can view in Google Earth or any GIS program; The application shows where you can get the download code, with which you can download up to 400 times, without limiting the number of vertices in each download with API gTools. The map also shows the coordinates from Google Earth, while the views of three-dimensional models are activated.

In addition to kml, you can also download in excel UTM format, latitude/longitude in decimal numbers, degrees / minutes / seconds and even DXF to open it with using AutoCAD or Microstation.

In the following video, you can see how the data and other features of the application are loaded.
