How to cut an audio file in audacity 2.1 2. Record audio and trim audio in Audacity. Instruments on the soundtrack

Audacity is a free cross-platform program for working with audio. It has extensive functionality; it can be used to record vocals, musical instruments and other sounds, and then combine them into one piece. You can use it to trim audio, and some users use it to create podcasts and mix music. You can download the Audacity utility in Russian on the official website.

What formats does it support?

Supported formats include: Ogg Vorbis, MP3, WAV, AIFF. This is far from full list. Audacity can work with 16, 24 and 32-bit audio, as well as import MPEG Audio.

Interface overview

The program has a standard interface for sound editors, in top part There are recording control buttons, recording and playback volume, various tools and settings for output devices. IN middle of the screen there is a sound diagram in left side channel mixer. Even lower is the status bar.

How to record sound

Before recording, you need to select the device with which the audio fragment will be recorded, then:

Instruments on the soundtrack

The audio track has a drop-down menu; you can call it by clicking on the arrow next to the name of the downloaded recording.

Let's get acquainted with its main functions:

  1. Name– allows you to assign your own name to the selected track.
  2. Move up– if there are two or more tracks, shifts the selected one up one position:
  3. Wave– displays the signal as a function of amplitude over time.
  4. – displays changes over time in sound waves, the frequencies that make up the sound and their intensity.
  5. – shows the frequency distribution spectrum.
  6. Mono— sets playback on the right or left channel.
  7. Left channel— sets playback of the left channel.
  8. — sets playback of the right channel.
  9. Make it stereo– turns the selected track and the track below it into stereo.
  10. – creates two mono tracks from one stereo.
  11. Format(Format) – sets the bit depth of the audio file (16, 24 and 32 bits).
  12. Rate– sets the project frequency.
  13. Button "".
  14. Solo” – when you press this button, only the selected track will be played.

How to trim a track

To start trimming music in Audacity you need select a fragment audio recording, holding the left mouse button (LMB) at the beginning, drag it until the end of the desired fragment. The following will appear at the top:

The fragment is highlighted, the next step is pruning. You can trim the track on both sides, leaving only what is selected, or you can cut out this fragment:

Merge sound

To merge you need:

Mixing

The settings on this panel provide control over the input and output parameters of sound cards. Both sliders will be located in the “-” position if audio recording is not supported by the parameters sound card. Sometimes this is due to the fact that on PC no drivers, or the sound device is not very common.

Left slider is responsible for the volume of the output sound, and with the help right The level of the input signal (microphone, line input, etc.) is adjusted. If distortion and noise occur during recording, you need to lower the level of the right slider.

Hello) The fact is that you can only upload sounds in SL in *.wav format with a sampling rate of 44k and a length of no more than 10 seconds. Therefore, today we will learn how to cut a long sound into several segments of 10 seconds. And a free cross-platform sound editor will help us with this.

We'll need it latest version. At the time of writing this article required functions were only in the editor version 1.3 beta. The link to his download was: . I think it should work. You will have to download and install it.

I downloaded the sound used in this lesson using the Youtube mp3 service from the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1hE-4tQkCo on YouTube. There you just need to insert a link to the video, click “Convert”, and wait for the link to download the mp3 to appear.

Now let's launch Audacity. This is what its interface looks like:

Now let's open our sound. The scale below is our sound:

You can select a piece of sound. Hold, drag and select. Like with text. Let's highlight the fragment that interests us:

Now let's cut it. To do this, click Edit > Trim to Edges or the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+T. You can enlarge the cropped fragment so that it occupies the entire scale - to do this, click View > Scale to Selection or Ctrl+E:

You can repeat the trimming operation until the fragment pleases you) You can also “smooth out” the beginning and end of the sound a little. To do this, select small pieces at the beginning and end of the audio scale and apply fade in and fade out effects to them respectively (Effects > Fade in)

Now let's turn up the volume. In SL, all sounds sound very quiet, so it makes sense to make the sound itself a little louder. I use an equalizer for this. Select the entire sound (Press Ctrl+A) and click Effects > Equalizer. In the equalizer, click on the small blue circle in the left middle of the scale that appears:

And drag it up a little, up to 12dB, like this:

This will increase the sound by +12 decibels, adding some noise. But the noise will not bother us, since the sounds sound muffled.

If you don't need to cut the song into fragments, to save one sound in Audacity you need to click File > Export.

To cut the sound into intervals, click Analysis > Regular interval labels:

Set Time to place first label to 0. Label placement method should be Label Interval. Set Label Interval to 10.0. We ignore Number Of Labels. Label Text - any text. I have this paravozik. Prepend numbers to label text? - Yes. Include Final Label? - Yes. Final audio segment equal with others? - No. Click Ok:

Please note that my last fragment lasts only one and a half seconds (as indicated by the scale at the top). I'll cut it off and won't save it. I'll select it and press Delete. And at the end of the previous one I will repeat “Smooth Fade”

The sound is now marked in 10 second intervals. All that remains is to save it and upload it to Second Life.

Trimming a song and setting it as a ringtone, adding it to a video clip, putting it on a series of slides - this is not a complete list of tasks for which trimming a music file may be necessary. You can do this using Audacity, which is easy to use and absolutely free.

Trimming a song in Audacity

To trim an audio file in Audacity, perform the following steps:

  • Download and install the software on your PC. The installation process is standard.
  • Download the codec for mp3 format and start the installation. (paste from folder)
  • Now we download the song that needs to be trimmed to the PC (if it is not downloaded). Open the program and click “File”, “Open”.
  • Specify the path to the file.

  • The file will be added to the program. Select the “Zoom In” tool and reduce the track step to 1 second to more accurately determine the desired section of the song.

  • Now you need to listen to the song and remember the time periods. For example, from 1.25 sec to 1.55 sec.
  • Select the selected area and look at the exact time below. To select, simply hold down the left mouse button and drag along the segment.

  • After the area is selected correctly, click “Edit”, “Copy”. You can also copy using the keyboard shortcut “Ctrl+C”.

  • Now click “File”, “Create a new project”.

  • Click “Edit”, “Paste”.

  • The trimmed song is added to the project. To save it, click “File”, “Export”.

  • Select a file format from the list and enter a name. Click "Options".

  • In a new window, select the sound quality of the file. We recommend setting it to 320 bps.

  • A new window will appear. We don't change anything in it. Click save.

  • The trimmed song is ready.

In this video I will show you how to trim an audio file using Audacity. I'll show you several ways to highlight required fragment and how you can trim the audio. In addition, I will show you how to make a smooth increase in volume and a smooth fade-out at the end of the trimmed file. Link to Audacity program:

It took me probably an hour and a half to find a normal person who explains things clearly. Before this, I came across some idiots, either speaking in such a way that I couldn’t understand the words at all, or explaining it as if I’d been using the program for at least a year. Well, for example, according to those people, I performed some actions, they turned out to be incorrect, but for some reason no one explains how to roll back, i.e., if something doesn’t work out, then you need to add the files again , and if there are 15 of them, then it takes a long time.

Hello, Igor! Namesake, by the way!!)
Help...What should I do...I do everything like you, I press the buttons...But they just ignore..."Audio trimming",or the same usual "trimming"... There is zero difference...I press. ..They click, but nothing happens.. No idea what to do!? The program did not freeze.

I almost broke my head, I re-materialized everything and everyone, but I still couldn’t find the “save” option...
Well, thank you!!!
At least a normal person was found to explain it to the stupid me.

4. Jelena Aleksandrova
please tell me how to use the audacity program to connect music files(I already learned this) when saving, so that they are saved not as one track, but separately, but sound like one track?

5. Nikolay Nikolayevich
The most important thing is that he didn’t tell you how to put tags?
For example, I listen to a long file, during the process I put notes in certain places, and at the end I delete/cut/glue

6. Eduard Korovyansky
I have a problem. I need to make a perfectly looping track, and when I save the audio file, there is a millisecond of silence. how to get rid of it?

7. Alexey Kirillov

Continuation of the article on how to use Audacity

We continue to consider the free one and its additional functions. In the last article, we learned how to cut out the performer’s voice from a music track, thus creating a kind of “backing track”. As part of this material, we will tell you how to record your own voice using the program for subsequent processing and how to cut the fragment you need from an existing audio file. So...

By default, the microphone input channel is disabled in the program settings. This is done so that the user does not inadvertently impose external sound interference on the edited track. To record, we need to activate it. You can enable recording from a microphone by clicking on the microphone icon in the main program window and selecting the “Enable monitoring” option from the drop-down list.

You can find out if the microphone is working and check whether its settings are correct visually - by the response of the microphone input monitoring color scale to your voice.

If the previous steps have been completed completely - you have made sure that the microphone is activated and that it is functioning correctly, then you can proceed directly to voice recording. To do this, click the button with the image of a red circle on the main program panel (the "Record" button).

At the end of recording, click the button with the image of a yellow square on the main panel of the program (the "Stop" button). You can listen to the recording before saving it directly in the main program window.

If you are completely satisfied with the end result, then the last step is to save the audio recording in the format you need.

2. Fragmentation (trimming) of audio recording

Now we invite you to learn how to cut out the fragment necessary for subsequent work from a music track. To begin, open the audio file you are interested in in the program.

The program offers a fairly convenient drag-n-drop algorithm for removing fragments of music tracks. In order to designate an unnecessary “piece” of audio recording, you just need to select it in the track analysis window (the program area with the blue spectrum) using the mouse and remove it from the current project using the button with the image of scissors (the “Cut” button).

You can listen to the recording before saving it directly in the main program window.

If you are completely satisfied with the end result, then the last step is to save the audio recording in the format you need.
